Calling is probably the most effective way to contact her, because you can get immediate feedback on what tapes are available. In order to insure that borrowers are authorized through their law enforcement agency to borrow videos, please submit the initial lending request on agency letterhead (not a fax cover sheet or internal memo form). Also provide the name of the department’s training officer. If a requested tape is in the library at the time of the request, it will be sent to the borrower’s agency immediately. If the tape is not in, the borrower's name will be put on the tape's waiting list, and it will be sent as soon as possible. The due date--the date by which the tape must be back at NEMRT--is indicated on the loan receipt included with each loan. Since a lot of the tapes have long waiting lists, prompt return is appreciated not only by the Instructors' Library, but the other departments using the video collection.

  • The Enduring Effects of War: Introduction
The Enduring Effects of War: Introduction A series of lesson plans on war for Year 9 and 10 students created through a partner- ship between the Medical Association for Prevention of War, its project partner Act for Peace and the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria. The Enduring Effects of War: Introduction INTRODUCTION History teachers often struggle with lessons about war. Conflicts have shaped the ancient and modern world and it is important that students are aware of the role of conflicts in the history of civilisation. In addition to developing a world view, teachers hope that understanding the history of war will help future generations learn from the actions of their ancestors. However, many teachers are concerned that unless approached sensitively, the focus on war in the classroom can have the opposite effect, causing students to glorify it. This unique set of resources has been developed from the perspectives of medical practitioners, many of them also war veterans. It helps students focus on the physical and mental costs of war, aspects of conflict often marginalised by larger themes of mateship and national pride. Students will learn about the often silent effects of war: injury, mental illness and disease. ABOUT THE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION FOR PREVENTION OF WAR The Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia) is a professional not-for-profit organisation that works to promote peace and disarmament. MAPW aims to reduce the physical and psychological impact, as well as environmental effect, of wars throughout the world. MAPW has branches in every state and territory in Australia. The members of MAPW are mostly medical practitioners who use their understanding of world medical issues in the campaign to prevent war using diplomatic channels rather than armed combat.

In the Shadow of the Moon 2007 PG 109 minutes David Sington and Christopher Riley's acclaimed documentary reveals the history of the Apollo space program through interviews with the brave astronauts who lived through a paradigm-shifting chapter in world history. Devoted to President John F. Kennedy's goal of sending a man to the moon, the NASA project pushed the envelope of what was humanly possible. But the program also experienced several failures, one of which resulted in tragedy. Man on Wire 2008 PG-13 94 minutes Philippe Petit captured the world's attention in 1974 when he successfully walked across a high wire between New York's Twin Towers. This Oscar winner for Best Documentary explores the preparations that went into the stunt as well as the event and its aftermath. Obsessed with the towers even before they were fully constructed, Petit sneaked into the buildings several times to determine the equipment he needed to accomplish his daring feat. American Experience: Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple 2006 NR 86 minutes How could one man -- Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones -- persuade 900 people to commit mass suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in the jungles of Guyana? This penetrating portrait of the demented preacher attempts to answer that question. Using never- before-seen footage and audio accounts of two Jonestown survivors, documentarian Stanley Nelson paints a chilling picture of a social experiment gone horribly awry. When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts 2006 TV-MA 3 discs Spike Lee commemorates the people of New Orleans with a four-hour epic documentary that not only recounts the events of late August 2005 but asks why they unfolded the way they did in the first place.

The dual themes of slavery and power deeply divided the growing nation during the first half of the 19th century. The mission of the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) is to preserve the significant Civil War battlefields by protecting the land and educating the public about the vital roles those battlefields played in directing the course of the nation's history. This 2-week CWPT curriculum is designed for students in grades 5,8, and 11. For each grade level, there are six sections: (1) "Disunion"; (2) "War"; (3) "Soldier Life"; (4) "Preservation";(5) Battlefield Field Trips"; and (6)"The War at Home." These sections are vital in using battlefield land as outdoor classrooms. The curriculum contains ideas for the classroom as well as ideas for interdisciplinary activities.
