By WALLYCE TODD Staff Writer

When one church hosts a Vacation Bible School, it can be a blessing. When six churches come together to create the Com- munity Vacation Bible School, the blessings are immense, say those who were involved in this month’s VBS held at the Dream Center and the Ameri- can Legion Hut in Whiteville. About 100 adults and chil- dren attended the event July 6-10 that was sponsored by Dia- mond Branch Baptist, First St. Paul Missionary Baptist, New Beginning Missionary Baptist, Spring Hill Baptist, St. James AME and St. Mark AME Zion churches. Adult, teen, junior, begin- ner, primary and adult classes were offered. The youth met Staff Photos by WALLYCE TODD at the Dream Center and the Rev. Pat Jordan, of St. Mark, was on the planning commit- tee for this year’s Community VBS. “I think it went well. I think it was great,” she said. It was a gathering of “lots of friends, lots of learning, lots of fellowship,” Jordan said. “It was hard work but we didn’t mind it because we knew and experienced what the results would be, which was overall spiritual growth in the community from the young to the old.” “We’ve had a record num- ber of adults, and it’s been great teaching,” said Karen Gore of Spring Hill Baptist. Symia Cokely, 11, was one of the children who attended the bible school. “I’m learning about prayer. It will help out the problems I have. You can always pray, and it will always help things,” Cokely said during supper one night. “If you haven’t got noth- ing else, you can always pray and (God will) work things out.” Eric Black, also 11 years old, attends St. Paul Mission- ary Baptist. “I learned about how Joseph was blessed wher- ever he (went).” “I learned Joseph dreamed,” said Axion Mc- Glockton, 8, of St Mark AME Zion. “Yesterday, we went to a lady’s house. I learned about Martin Luther King,” Timothy Collier of Diamond Branch said. “It brings kids together who are not usually together while they learn about the Bible,” said Tamara McKoy Munn, an assistant teacher for the primary children and member of New Beginnings Missionary Baptist. “It teaches them moral val- ues, which is what they need in the world today. “It’s very important to have a relationship with Jesus,” she said. Ella Scarborough of St. James AME was on the Com- munity VBS planning com- mittee and served as the at- tendance coordinator for the week. “I couldn’t stay still, be- cause I was running from class to class,” said Scarborough. She helped plan the event and served as attendance coordi- nator. “It was awesome, “she said. “Oh, it’s always wonderful because I love churches com- ing together and you get the opportunity to see what other The News Reporter, Monday, July 20, 2015 -- 1B Sports The News Reporter, Monday, July 20, 2015 - Page 2B County, Riegelwood to meet today in state DY baseball tournament elimination game CERRO GORDO - A match- but was held scoreless through Tisdell led Columbus bat- up of longtime District 2 rivals the first five innings. ters with two hits. will unfold today at 4 p.m. when Jacobs came up with two As the state tournament host Columbus County takes clutch fielding plays in the host, Columbus County was on district tournament cham- late innings to help the secure exempt from District 2 Tour- pion Riegelwood in a third- the shut-out. nament play this season and round game of the 2015 North received an automatic berth Carolina Dixie Youth Majors Dunn 13 in state tournament play.
