The board agreed to drop the “annex” word, and fol- lowed Byrd’s suggestion. In addition, the board mentioned adding the phrase, “In God We Trust” to both buildings. This move is something approved by the commissioners in early May. A flagpole for the new building is also being considered. Clerk of Court Jess Hill and County Manager Bill Clark have agreed that moving day for the complicated clerk’s office files and personnel will begin June 23, and likely last three days. Total occupancy date for the entire new building is expected within two to three days after the clerk’s move, which is to be done by a private moving company with constant supervision and oversight by Hill and his employees. The new Columbus County Courthouse will be open Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon for the public to tour. Court officials will be on hand to explain the various offices and new courtrooms.

Jenkins, who signed E.J. Jenkins See Story on 2B in November to play at UNC-Wilmington, is ranked as the top high school draft prospect in North Carolina and among the top 100 in the nation. Speculation since the first of the year has Jenkins being selected in the first round. Reports are that the Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams most interested in acquir- ing Jenkins. As a four-year starter at West Columbus, his main position has been center field and he usually batted lead-off. He has also han- dled pitching and infield duties. Scouts have mostly been impressed by his speed as he has been clocked at 6.32 seconds in the 60-yard dash.
