6 The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 14, 2013 Year of Faith 2012-2013 By: Kevin Fritz The story of in the Book of Genesis (chapters 12-22) is a journey of faith and can serve as a model and inspiration for our own journey of faith. Last How Catholics Can Live week we introduced Abraham and reflected on his the Year of Faith response of "Yes" to God's call. As we continue the story (Genesis (October 11, 2012 through 12:1-9), we see that in this call, God makes several promises to Abraham. November 24, 2013) God promises land, descendants, and a blessing. But these promises are in the future. Suggestions from Bishop David Ricken of This requires a leap of faith. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews speaks of this leap Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the of faith: "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was Committee on Evangelization and to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go." (Hebrews Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of 11:8) Catholic It is these promises that enable Abraham to say "Yes" to the call of God. As John C.L. Help those in need. The Vatican urges Gibson points out "the promises are what gave purpose and meaning to Abraham's Catholics to donate to charity and volun- life." (Genesis, Vol. 2: 12) For us the call to faith is to a journey that will lead us to teer to help the poor during the Year of eternal life and happiness with God. This promise with the hope of fulfillment can give Faith. This means to personally encounter meaning and purpose to our life. Paul states that Abraham "believed, hoping against Christ in the poor, marginalized and vulner- hope, that he would become 'the father of many nations,' according to what was said, able. Helping others brings Catholics face- 'Thus shall your descendants be.'" (Romans 4:18) to-face with Christ and creates an example for the rest of the world. This is why the author of the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us: "Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) Hope that one day we will share in the eternal life promised to us enables us to continue on the Project Rachel: journey of faith and keeps us going until the promise is fulfilled. John C.L. Gibson suggests what this means in our own lives today: "It is faith, not the present state of Post Abortion the world, that speaks to us of God's and Christ's triumph and of the fulfillment in our day and in our midst of the promises so long ago spoken to Abraham." (Genesis, Vol. Healing 2: 16) Forgiveness in the Catholic Tradition isn’t The journey of faith is a journey that lasts our entire lifetime. We are told that Abraham “forgetting what happened”, nor is it simply "journeyed on by stages." (Genesis 12:9) The journey of faith for all of us takes place relief from guilt or punishment. It is a in stages. We do not get there all at once. Abraham's faith grew in stages as he lived means of finding a release from the prison out his life. At each stage his faith deepened. in which the abortion has enslaved one. It is a means of being transformed in heart The important thing is to begin the journey - to say "Yes" as Abraham did. Then we and created anew. must continue the journey as Paul reminds us: "It is important that we continue on our Next Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats: August 2- course, no matter what stage we have reached." Children’s Faith Formation Corner Color My World When you leave Mass today, take a look at the colors of the grass, the sky, the flowers on the trees that line Cross Creek Blvd. in front of St. Mark the Evangelist Church. Have you ever no- ticed what color those flowers are? During the past two weeks, many middle-school-age kids attended a two-week intensive Faith Formation Summer Session. They had the opportunity to create paintings with water- colors. From the moment their brushes touched their papers and left a dot of color; they were on their way to creating their own masterpiece. They added more colors and blended them. God created us and our world much the same way. His masterpiece began with creat- ing the heavens and the earth, but the earth was dark. He then said, "Let there be light" and there was light. (Genesis 1:3) But He didn't stop there! All the colors in nature are from Him. He blended the colors too; notice how there are many, many, shades of green in the grasses and leaves. No two stones are alike; no two people are the same. Get your watercolors out and begin to create your own masterpieces. Look at that blank sheet of paper and remind yourself of how beautiful our world is. How many different shades of green can you create? Think how disappointed you would be if some- one destroyed your work! And as you look around when leaving Mass today, think of how important it is for us to lovingly care for God's masterpiece so that everyone can enjoy it!
