BE KIND, BE WISE, BE A FRIEND, BE GRITTY “ Thursday, December 13, 2018 ______

Hi BE Families, As part of our PBL initiative, Mrs Chase’s and Mrs. Bittinger’s first Graders are reading a Gingerbread Man story and are going on a mapping adventure looking for clues and mapping out where the gingerbread man has been. The school map includes “Gingerbread Gym, “Candy Cane Cafeteria”, “Lemon Drop Library”, and “Merry Music Room”. It is all about spreading the love of books and making learning fun! Speaking of books, is a perfect time to focus on family reading as well. In the book The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie, the author shares her knowledge and experiences raising readers and founding the immensely popular Read-Aloud Revival Podcast. This online resource contains free read-aloud podcasts and book lists such as Christmas Read-Alouds for Families, Read to Your Baby Lists… etc. Her list of Xmas themed chapter books for reading with the whole family includes the following recommendations: The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser ( a multicultural family pulling together at Christmas). Jotham’s Journey by Arnold Ytreeide (first in a three book series that starts with It’s a fictional telling of the Nativity), and A Little House Christmas Treasury Collection of Chapters (from The Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder that are pulled and collected together) to name a few. Check out https://readaloudrevival.com/podcasts/ for more. The author also suggests a tradition of wrapping up a picture book for each day leading up to Christmas and creating a tradition of unwrapping and reading one each day. Some picture books suggested are Tomie dePaola’s Merry Christmas Strega Nona , Jan Brett’s Gingerbread Christmas, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, and ‘Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree. Hope you will help spread the love of reading this holiday season. Happy Reading! Sincerely,

Interim Principal

Employment Opportunity The Berkshire Local School district is seeking individuals to work in the Latchkey Program at Burton Elementary for the 2018/2019 school year. Job Requirements: FBI/BCI Background Check, current First Aid and CPR certifications. Hours are flexible. Hours for Latchkey Program: Monday-Friday: 6:30 a.m. - 8:35 a.m. Monday-Wednesday & Friday: 3:15 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Thursday 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Those interested should contact Breana Verbic at [email protected] Posted 11/26/2018

Parents please do not pass other cars during arrival or dismissal. We know these times are crazy and want to keep traffic moving. We want all the kids to be safe and this can not happen when parents are hurrying out of line to get out of the lot. Have your kids packed, loved, and ready to get out when your car is at the top of the circle by the building (not just in front of the door). We cannot get to every car to open all doors. Encourage your child to open their own door and hop out as soon as your car is stopped, we will keep an eye on them and make sure that they are safe getting into the building.

Candy cane sales are in full swing! If your child needs more order forms they can get them from their homeroom teachers please send exact change and the order form.

LOST AND FOUND

We will be donating all items in both lost and found areas during Winter Break, if they

are not claimed before then. We have amassed quite the collection this year, and it is

getting out of control. Please, if you feel your child has lost something please come in

before, or after, school to check it out.

Thank you SNOWFLAKE SHOP VOLUNTEERS we appreciate the help and could not

do this without you!!

The office is having a drawing for 4 free trips to the Berkshire Hills Christmas Lights Park. (2 winners this week and 2 winners next week). All kids entered in the Friday 12/7 drawing are ones who have received a Badger Award this week and anyone who receives a Badger Award next week will be in the Friday 12/14 drawing. (value of $25) Congratulations to our first week winners, Nico DeCarlo & Brinley Cremeans!!!!

The Kindness Tree Update: We have a goal of 500 acts of kindness by winter break. So far our tree has 242 acts of kindness. We have till next friday to get 258 more. Wait, Update just arrived- Mrs. Chase’s class decided on helping by giving their candy canes given to them by the kindness elves to Mrs. Mullet’s class because they received notes and treats from them earlier in the week. That is 26 more acts of kindness which brings our count to 268! Please have your child ask their homeroom teacher if you need more “kindness hearts” to record your acts of kindness for our challenge! Great JOb Burton Elementary!
