Bonn. 6 Introduzione “Dai luoghi di culto deve prendere le mosse qualsiasi indagine sulle religioni dell’Italia antica precristiana. Sono religioni, queste, senza rivelazione, senza libro sacro né dottrina esplicita, complessiva, trasmessa, insegnata ed interpretata. Le reli- gioni italiche e romana si configurano come religioni dell’atto, del rito, che vengono trasmesse oralmente e sotto forma di regole rituali. … In tale quadro, le fonti che si riferiscono esplicitamente al campo religioso sono soprattutto quelle legate al culto e perciò ai luoghi dove questo veniva celebrato, poiché lì erano conservate iscrizioni, offerte, altari, statue, in breve tutto quello che informa sulle religioni dell’Italia anti- ca, e poiché l’organizzazione stessa – la topografia – del recinto sacro rispecchia in qualche modo il culto ivi praticato.”1 Con queste parole Olivier De Cazanove introduceva, nel 2008, all’interno della tavola rotonda seguita al grande convegno di Roma dedicato ai luoghi di culto Saturnia tellus, la presentazione di un ambizioso progetto di ricerca mirato alla crea- zione di uno strumento dedicato alla fruizione degli studiosi di storia delle religioni: l’inventario dei luoghi di culto dell’Italia antica. Lo studioso, nell’illustrare le questioni metodologiche da tenere presenti nel- l’impostazione del progetto, sottolineava in prima istanza il problema della mancanza di univocità nell’utilizzazione del termine “luogo di culto” in quanto il concetto cam- bia a seconda del periodo storico e la stessa geografia sacra dell’Italia antica appare diversa persino da città a città.     Pindar Fr. 75 SM and the Politics of Athenian Space Richard T. Neer and Leslie Kurke Towns are the illusion that things hang together somehow. Anne Carson, “The Life of Towns” T IS WELL KNOWN that Pindar’s poems were occasional— composed on commission for specific performance settings. IBut they were also, we contend, situational: mutually im- plicated with particular landscapes, buildings, and material artifacts. Pindar makes constant reference to precious objects and products of craft, both real and metaphorical; he differs, in this regard, from his contemporary Bacchylides. For this reason, Pindar provides a rich phenomenology of viewing, an insider’s perspective on the embodied experience of moving through a built environment amidst statues, buildings, and other monu- ments. Analysis of the poetic text in tandem with the material record makes it possible to reconstruct phenomenologies of sculpture, architecture, and landscape. Our example in this essay is Pindar’s fragment 75 SM and its immediate context: the cityscape of early Classical Athens. Our hope is that putting these two domains of evidence together will shed new light on both—the poem will help us solve problems in the archaeo- logical record, and conversely, the archaeological record will help us solve problems in the poem. Ultimately, our argument will be less about political history, and more about the ordering of bodies in space, as this is mediated or constructed by Pindar’s poetic sophia.     EXCAVATIONS IN THE ATHENIAN AGORA: 1951 (PLATES 19-31) T 5HROUGH the months of April to July, 1951, the sixteenth season of excavation was carried out in the Agora of Athens by the American School of Classical Studies. Field work was concentrated in the market square proper and was directed to the systematic clearance down to the early Roman level of large areas in the west central, north central and southeastern parts. Several new topographical discoveries were made, among them the existence of a temple of the early Roman period in the southwest quadrant of the square. New information was gained regarding previously known monuments such as the Peribolos of the Twelve Gods, the Temple and Altar of Ares, the Middle Stoa. Conservation and reconstruction of a modest nature were carried out on the Temple of Ares, the Peribolos of the Eponymous Heroes and the Great Marble Altar to the east of the Metroon. A number of well furnished chamber tombs and individual graves dating from the sixteenth to the tenth century B.C.were explored beneath the northern part of the market square. Not least important, the year's work resulted in greater improvementto the general appearanceand accessibility of the Agora than that of any single previous season (P1. 19a).
