Sustaining The Technopolis: High-Technology Development in Austin, Texas 1988-2012 By: David V. Gibson and John Sibley Butler Date: February 2013 Abstract: Update and elaboration of the 1988 Journal of Business Venturing article "Creating the Technopolis: High-Technology Development in Austin, Texas" which emphasized the role of key influencers, institutions and networks that made possible Austin’s extraordinary technology-based growth. Elaborates the "Technopolis Wheel" framework to better reflect challenges and opportunities as well as review lessons learned during the past 25 years. While new aspects have emerged an unchanging, fundamental reality is that the "magic" of the Austin Model continues to be based on 1st- and 2nd-level influencers — key leaders and visionaries from academia, business, and government networking and working together to achieve targeted objectives. Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. • 2016 Music Preview Guide
The Independent Blogger’s Guide to SXSW 2016 MUSIC PREVIEW TORI HOWARD TORI Introduction “Who are you looking forward to seeing this year?” It’s a question I get asked almost every day. And each time without fail, there’s an awkward silence while my mind starts running through the 2000+ acts we’ve invited to perform at SXSW. No matter which ones I rattle off, there’s always a tinge of regret afterward once I slowly start remembering countless other artists I should have mentioned. I could have brought up how great everything I’ve heard from Pastel Ghost is or how amazingly epic Jambinai’s live show is. I forgot to mention how often I have WALL’s “Cuban Cigars” stuck in my head, and how proud I am that Austin has such great forward-thinking acts like Future Blondes, BOAN and Troller. I neglected to say how curious I am to see how people react to our first-ever Hip-Hop From Asia showcase, and how excited I am that everyone at SXSW will have the chance to see cult 80’s post-punk band Sad Lovers & Giants perform their first show on American soil. To be honest, I’m happy to have this problem. Once again in the spirit of discovery, we’ve asked a few of the many tastemakers we respect to share their voice. The following pages are a snapshot of the artists who we are all excited about. You’ve likely heard people talking about some of these in anticipation of the following weeks and days, while others are the “hidden gems” we’ve stumbled upon and feel passionate about.

  • ASCAP/BMI Comment
Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources.
