The interstate boundaries between Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya shown in this publication are as interpreted from the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 but have yet to be verified. The state boundaries between Uttaranchal & Uttar Pradesh, Bihar & Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh & Madhya Pradesh have not been verified by government concerned. © Government of India, Copyright 2006. The statement sums up the contribution of Census Organisation which has been working in the field of mapping in the country. The Census Commissionarate of India has been working in the field of cartography and mapping since 1872. A major shift was witnessed during Census 1961 when the office had got a permanent footing. For the first time, the census maps were published in the form of 'Census Atlases' in the decade 1961-71. Alongwith the national volume, atlases of states and union territories were also published.

Annexure-VI A Profile Report on Pre-Project Survey of Border Area Development Programmes in Punjab Kesar Singh U S Rangnekar Punjab remains a classic example of a fast developing economy with agriculture its base. The state is a pioneer in ushering in the green revolution in the country. Besides this, the state has also made remarkable progress in allied sectors like dairy, poultry, fishery, and also in horticulture and vegetables. The government has been giving importance to agro- based industries since a period. The state is one of the progressive states in strengthening the infrastructure, particularly irrigation and power. The cumulative effect of all this is manifested in the highest per capita income since reorganization of Punjab in 1966. Punjab, in an area of 50362 sq kms, is one of the smaller states of India. It accounts for 1.5 percent of total area of the country and 2.4 percent of the population. The state, triangular, in shape extends from 29o 30’ to 32o 32’ north latitude and 73 55’ to 67 50’ east longitude. Physiographically, the state may be divided into three regions; (i) hilly tracts (ii) foothills and (iii) flat plains. The forest cover in the state is 6.05 percent of its total area as against the national average of 19.4 percent. Punjab’s climate is continental, semi arid humid. Soils of the state are sandy and loamy in texture. The state has developed quite good network of canals and tubewells for crop irrigation and has a strong institutional structure, too, for providing credit through a multi- tier and multi- functional system.

1. Introduction
1. Introduction Gurdaspur is a flood prone district as it is surrounded by river Ravi, Beas and other small rivulets. Dhussi Bandh has been constructed along river Ravi and Beas in length of 164000 ft. and 129500 ft. respectively. There are certain very sensitive/vulnerable points where the gushing water cause breaches in Dhussi Bandh and heavy flooding of the area. Years 1988 and 1995 witnessed heavy floods in Gurdaspur District which caused loss of lives, crops and property and infrastructure. River Ravi has its origin and catchment area in Himachal Pradesh and enters Punjab just upstream of Ranjit Sagar Dam. Although the Ranjit Sagar Dam has been completed in 2001 and chances of flash floods in River Ravi have been consequently reduced to some extent but the area downstream Madhopur Head Works, where River Ujh and tributaries Jallalia, Khooni Nallah, Shingarwan and Tarnah which joins River Ravi at confluence point near Makora Pattan and in River opposite Rosse complex Gurdaspur and Naumani Nallah opposite near Kamalpur Jattan will continue to cause flood damages as these rivulets are naturals, high velocity and flashy torrents. Due to floods in river Ravi since last so many years, the left bank of the river has been heavily eroded away at many places which further endangers to the border fencing, flood lights, border observatory posts, agricultural land and adjoining village settlements. The Course of river Ravi has change its way during last few years due to soil erosion near village Rosse,Chandu wadala and Momanpur. Sakki/Kiran Nallah is a natural uncanalized Nallah in District Gurdaspur which may also cause floods in adjoining areas and endangers to agricultural land and settlements.

PREFACE This work on the Sikh Misals mainly relates to the eighteenth century which is, undoubtedly, the most eventful period in the Sikh history. It has been done at the instance of Dr Ganda Singh, one of India’s top-ranking historians of his time and the most distinguished specialist of the eighteenth century Punjab history. For decades, there had been nothing nearer his heart than the desire of writing a detailed account of the Sikh Misals. Due to his preoccupation with many contro- versial issues of the Sikh history he kept on postponing this work to a near future. But a day came when the weight of years and failing health refused to permit him to undertake this work. He asked me to do it and magnanimously placed at my disposal his unrivalled life-long collection of Persian manuscripts and other rare books relating to the period. Thus, with the most invaluable source material at my working desk my job became easier. I have always felt incensed at the remarks that the eighteenth century was a dark period of Sikh history. The more I studied this period the more unconvinced I felt about these remarks Having devoted some three decades exclusively to this period I came to the irrefutable conclusion that it is impossible to find a more chivalrous and more glorious period in the history of the world than the eighteenth century Punjab. In the display of marvelous Sikh national character this period is eminently conspicuous. In utter resourcelessness and confronted with the mighty Mughal government and then the greatest military genius of the time in Asia, in the person of Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Sikhs weathered all storms for well-nigh half a century with utmost fighting capacity, overwhelming zeal and determination, unprecedented sacrifice and unshakable faith in their ultimate victory.
