The play deals with a family, who as part of a daily enforced ritual, re-enact a farce, written and directed by Dinny, the patriarch, a story which accounts for their exile in London, and away from their family home in Cork. Their enactment is an attempt to create a false memory, for their performance is very much at odds with the real events which provoked their exile. Surrounded by recordings of the other members of the town, highlighting their ‘sins’, we enter into Thomas’ life, his routines and his quest to save those around him. As the plot unfolds, the audience are witness to Thomas re-telling or rather, re-making, the story of a very significant day through editing of the conversations he has with others on his tapes. The play starts with Thomas frantically making his breakfast to the sound of Doris Day’s ‘Everybody Loves a Lover’, until he becomes irritated with the noise and seeks to destroy the recorder it is playing on. This is the audience’s first hint of violence and destruction in the play, but also introduces them to Thomas’ world, full of pre-recorded sound and nothing else. His day appears to be a mission to recreate memories through these recordings and he skips forward and back on a few before finding the point in recorded conversations that he is looking for. The first interaction of significance is with his ‘mammy’, a conversation between the live Thomas and a recorded voice of his mother. The audience soon learn that this is a rehearsed routine. He knows the nuances of the conversation, the timings of her responses versus his.

    2019-2020 GEVA THEATRE CENTER IMPACT REPORT Mark Cuddy | Artistic Director Christopher Mannelli | Executive Director Word of the Year: IMPROVISATION 2019-2020 marked Geva Theatre Center’s 47th season and Artistic Director Mark Cuddy’s 25th. After starting out on a spirited note in September, with the Tony Award-winning musical La Cage aux Folles, all plans were brought to an abrupt halt halfway through the year. The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic brought with it equal parts anxiety, resilience, perseverance and hope. By the end of its 2020 fiscal year on July 31, Geva—and the global theatre community—was looking back on a season they could never have imagined. ARTISTIC & LITERARY HIGHLIGHTS PRODUCTIONS: The 2019-2020 Season was halted on March 13, 2020, due to the pandemic. Still, seven wide-ranging productions in the Wilson Stage and Fielding Stage were realized before the stages went dark. Wilson and Fielding Stage highlights included: Marriage and Babies A mid-life anniversary getaway in Slow Food and the trials of new parenthood in Cry It Out provided laughs and tears. Musical Virtuosos Danny Vaccaro’s show-stopping performance in La Cage Aux Folles and the super talented cast of Once book-ended a season with A Christmas Carol celebrating the holidays. Passionate Positions characters wrestled with race, privilege, ethics and history in the searing drama of The Niceties and the contemporary drama Queen.
