    eTropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics Impacts of Historical Pandemics on India: Through the Lens of 20th Century Hindi Literature Prachi Priyanka https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9642-8068 Sharda University, Uttar Pradesh, India Abstract India has been swept by pandemics of plague, influenza, smallpox, cholera and other diseases. The scale and impact of these events was often cataclysmic and writers offered a glimpse into the everyday life of ordinary people who lost their lives and livelihoods and suffered the angst and trauma of mental, physical and emotional loss. This paper focuses on the devastation caused by pandemics especially in the Ganges deltaic plains of India. Through selected texts of 20th century Hindi writers – Munshi Premchand, Phanishwar Nath Renu, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Bhagwan Das, Harishankar Parsai, Pandey Bechan Sharma – this paper aims to bring forth the suffering and struggles against violence, social injustices and public health crises in India during waves of epidemics and pandemics when millions died as they tried to combat the rampant diseases. The university started functioning in 2012 and the admission formalities of the first batch of students were completed in August 2013. Initially we started with 5 M.A courses. When we look back in 2017, it is worthy to note that the university has achieved tremendous growth both in infrastructure and academic level. Within this short span of time, we could start 10 M.A. Courses and Research Programmes. The first two batches of M.A and one batch of M.Phil students are out. Amenities like Library, Studio and Theatre claims self sufficiency. 28 permanent teachers were also appointed. The year 2016-17 witnessed so many important developments. The new library- research block and Heritage Museum, were opened. The year was marked with variety of academic activities and visit of several dignitaries.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com While an explicit gay presence in Indian literature can be detected as early as 1924, in "Chocolate," a Hindi short story by Pandey Bechan Sharma, Firdaus Kanga is the first Indian author, writing in any language, to produce a novel with a gay protagonist. He is not only a pioneer in Indian gay fiction, but he has also explored the intersection of two kinds of marginality: that based on being a member of a sexual minority and that based on being a disabled person. Born in Bombay (as it was then called) in 1959, Kanga has had the incurable condition of osteogenesis imperfecta since birth. The condition is caused by a mutation in genes due to which the bone-forming collagen tissue is not synthesized properly. This results in extremely brittle bones and stunted growth. He stopped growing when he attained a height of four feet. Kanga belongs to the Parsi community, which fled from Persia centuries ago but is now a dramatically dwindling community in India. The Parsis of Mumbai are known for their deep Anglophilia and for their tendency to regard themselves as "reluctant Indians." Denied a physically active life accessible to an able-bodied man, Kanga built around himself a universe of literature, populated by gay writers such as James Baldwin and E.M. Forster and by English female novelists such as Iris Murdoch. Kanga initially studied law, but gave it up to pursue journalism, a course of study in which he excelled.
