Renault Sport Academy 2019 line­up announced

Renault Sport Racing is pleased to welcome Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou and Brazilian teen Caio Collet to the Renault Sport Academy for the 2019 season.

They will join reigning Formula Renault Eurocup champion Max Fewtrell, Eurocup rookie winner Christian Lundgaard and Victor Martins, who are retained from last year, on the 2019 programme. GP3 Series champion Anthoine Hubert – Affiliated Driver last season – becomes a fully­fledged Academy member.

For 2019, four drivers will be present at Grand Prix weekends as Anthoine and Guanyu (FIA Formula 2 Championship) and Max and Christian (FIA Formula 3 Championship) compete on the Formula 1 support bill. Victor and Caio will race in the Formula Renault Eurocup, which takes on nine Grand Prix circuits including Monaco and Yas Marina.

Guanyu will take on the role as Renault F1 Team’s Development Driver for the 2019 season.

Academy members will utilise Renault’s vast experience in motorsport to further progress their racing careers, while also receiving physical and mental training, media and marketing support and engineering expertise at Renault F1 Team’s bases at Enstone in the United Kingdom and Viry­Châtillon in France.

“I’m confident in the six drivers we have signed for 2019. Each of them has demonstrated the necessary qualities to win races and compete for championships, which underscores the strength of this line­up. As the programme grows, we have to be more stringent and the requirements to be a member of the Academy grow stricter. We’re very happy with our approach, which will see us bear fruit at the end of the year as we near to the time when we aim to have an Academy driver competing for the Formula 1 seat. For now, all six drivers have their objectives for this season and we’re excited to see how the racing pans out.”

Renault Sport Academy

Launched in 2016, the Renault Sport Academy aims to find and nurture young racing drivers through the junior racing championships with the overall objective to place an Academy driver in the Formula 1 race seat.

Coinciding with Renault F1 Team’s development, the Academy targets a driver becoming a future Formula 1 world champion with the team.

2019 marks the second three­year phase of the programme, which will see a strengthening in connection between Renault’s group of young drivers and the Formula 1 team.
