Faszerd FFA Consultants in Acoustics and Noise Control Ltd. 304, 605 – 1 Street SW Calgary AB T2P 3S9 Canada ABSTRACT Noise control of a 500 tonne, 2500 hp hydraulic mining excavator is used as a case study to describe the detailed noise control of one piece of equipment as part of a comprehensive noise mitigation plan of an integrated open-pit coalmine and powerplant. An environmental noise model of the entire mining and powerplant operations was developed and used to facilitate a combination of equipment operation and individual equipment noise reduction targets. Noise control equipment was designed and engineered to meet the equipment noise reduction targets and maintain equipment operation. The individual noise control equipment developed for a hydraulic mining excavator is detailed as a case study because the excavator noise levels were the highest in the mine. The individual noise sources which contribute to the overall noise signature of the excavator were measured and quantified for inclusion with the comprehensive environmental noise model. Noise control options for the various component noise sources were evaluated and the option to significantly reduce the engine exhaust noise source was selected. Now is a very pertinent time to look at the ongoing sustainability of the UK vehicle industry. 2006 was a great year of change in the UK automotive sector. Plant closures in Coventry and model changes elsewhere affected production vol- umes. However a successful UK automotive sector is still extremely viable. A rapidly evolving, environmentally focused industry needs to deliver all the elements of sustainability to ensure long-term viability. This report demonstrates the challenges we face in the UK of achieving this and is a reflection of the pressures of adapting procedures, methods, products and disposal of vehicles. -

Working Paper No. 117 Public investment and technology choice in the road transport sector: Its effects on industrial growth in Madras by Nasir Tyabji Madras Institute of Development Studies 79, Second Main Road, Gandhi Nagar Adyar, Chennai 600 020 February 1994 Public investment and technology choice in the road transport sector Its effects on industrial growth in Madras I ntm.d.uclion At the end of the Second Five Year Plan (1956-1961), Madras State was a major centre of the motor vehicle industry, in fact, the second largest in the country after Maharashtra. It accounted for about 15 per cent of both the fixed capital employed and value added in the industry. More importantly, perhaps, the industry in Madras had strong backward linkages to the metallurgical industries; and it was more horizontally disaggregated than was the case in other States.1 In other words, the motor vehicle industry could be expected to have noticeable spread effects, and to encourage the growth of the motor vehicle component industry, and of the metal working industries in general. This result was not at all an outcome of any perspective that the Madras authorities had laid out. As late as 1950, they had decided that as the motor-vehicle industry had no future in the State, there was no need for them to provide evidence before an expert committee established by the Government of lndia.2 Possibly this attitude emerged from an unduly Madras-centric view point, which was, however, given some substance by an industrial growth perspective that emphasised the local utilisation of regional resources as a principle underlying the State's development process.3 Notwithstanding this perspective, through a complex of local and national determinants, the motor vehicle industry in Madras developed, largely independently also, of the basic principles laid down by the Tariff Commission Report on the Automobile Industry, submitted in 1953. -

Substantial cost savings with fleet management has been documented in the management science literature.
