  • Blue Jeans (Edited from Wikipedia)
Blue Jeans (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY Jeans are a type of pants, typically made from denim or dungaree cloth. Often the term "jeans" refers to a particular style of pants, called "blue jeans," which were invented by Jacob W. Davis in partnership with Levi Strauss & Co. in 1871 and patented by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss on May 20, 1873. Prior to the Levi Strauss patented trousers, the term "blue jeans" had been long in use for various garments (including trousers, overalls, and coats), constructed from blue colored denim. Originally designed for cowboys and miners, jeans became popular in the 1950s among teenagers, especially members of the greaser subculture. Jeans were a common fashion item in the 1960s hippie subculture and they continued to be popular in the 1970s and 1980s youth subcultures of punk rock and heavy metal. Historic brands include Levi's, Lee, and Wrangler. Today, jeans remain a popular fashion item and come in various fits. HISTORY Research on the trade of jean fabric shows that it emerged in the cities of Genoa, Italy, and Nîmes, France. Gênes, the French word for Genoa, may be the origin of the word "jeans". In Nîmes, weavers tried to reproduce jean but instead developed a similar twill fabric that became known as denim, from de Nîmes, meaning "from Nîmes". Genoa’s jean was a fustian textile of "medium quality and of reasonable cost", very similar to cotton corduroy for which Genoa was famous, and was "used for work clothes in general". The Genoese navy equipped its sailors with jeans, as they needed a fabric which could be worn wet or dry.

  • Lit Review Was the Role Luxury Fashion Has
Buying Rebellion: Fashion As a Marker of Class in America Eli Swanson Junior Research Project Seminar March 13, 2021 1 Introduction Fashion is, perhaps, one of the most diverse forms of art. In the modern world, it is a fact of life that everyone wears clothes. Clothes provide warmth, modesty, and utility, and are now more producible than ever before. Visual arts, music, writing, etc. have much less direct affect to the public. These media are ways in which much of history has been passed down, but unlike clothes, they have little day-to-day utility. Clothes, on the other hand, have been developed and engineered as long as human civilization has existed. This is partially due to technological advancements, but also to a kind of Darwinian selection. Over time, clothes have become more versatile, durable, and producible. Certain articles, like the cotton shirt, jacket, and pants, are now pretty universal across all cultures. While clothes become more homogenous in terms of utility, the meaning clothes can convey has made them become extremely varied. What someone wears tells a story. Clothes can dictate someone's region, age, gender, interests, hobbies, affiliations, political ideologies, and more categories than one can list. Clothes can look “trashy,” and be made of the same materials as “classy” ones. An article of clothing can look “stylish” on one wearer, and “cheap” on another. Having had a growing interest in fashion for a couple of years now, one place where I have noticed this difference is in thrift stores. Because thrift stores are generally sorted by clothing type, gender, and size, this means that clothes with many different functions are generally grouped together.

“Seditionaries” By Kelly Arlene Grant A Thesis Submitted to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Masters of Arts in Women and Gender Studies. April 24, 2015, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright Kelly Arlene Grant, 2015 Approved: Dr. Randi Warne Supervisor Approved: Dr Michele Byers Examiner Approved: Dr Jayne Wark Reader Date: April 24, 2015 0 Abstract “Seditionaries” by Kelly Arlene Grant Abstract: What has fashion to do with gender studies? This is a reasonable question to ask. How the body is constrained, decorated and presented has been a central enterprise in human culture, and continues to be so today. This thesis will explore the world of 1970s UK Punk beyond Malcolm McLaren, intentionally shifting focus to Vivienne Westwood and the larger cultural landscape. It will explain the context within which a normative hyper masculine narrative has been drawn in the past and will lift up other equally rich and important aspects of Punk through the medium of sartorial language. The young women and men of the Bromley Contingent will serve as a key example of how the clothing Vivienne Westwood designed was used and incorporated within an existing Mod and Teddy-boy aesthetic to express their identity and create a subcultural aesthetic in the UK. April 24, 2015 1 Acknowledgements It is important that I recognize the importance of several people to the completion of this project. First, Dr. R. R. Warne, without whose guidance and ear I may not have completed this program. Also, my husband Pierre Longtin, who pushed me to return to academia, my mother Dianne Grant, who wouldn’t let me give up, and my brother Dane for starting me off on the best financial footing.
