I must thank my club and the league for providing the opportunity, of experiencing 56 years of pleasure by both playing and umpiring over that period of time. The honour and privilege of being asked to become League President in 2015 is something I was thrilled to accept with a tremendous amount of pride on behalf of myself, my club and my family after all these years of being involved with the recreational game. As your President this year, I will do my best to visit as many clubs as I possibly can. I also look forward to meeting the many cricketing friends I have made over the past years. Hopefully the kettle will be on as well. My best wishes go to all club officials, players and umpires, hoping that you have a good, successful and enjoyable cricket season. I hear you say. Well I have been involved with the Bassetlaw and District Cricket League for over 45 years, both as a player and club official, initially at Mansfield Colliery and currently at Thoresby Park. The invitation to be the League President for 2018 came as a complete surprise but one I was honoured and privileged to accept, both for myself and for my club. In keeping with tradition, I am hoping to visit as many clubs as I can and I look forward to meeting friends old and new. It promises to be an interesting season as we adapt to the new Laws of Cricket as they affect us, particularly the disciplinary section. Also let us all continue to work hard to arrest the decline in player numbers we have experienced. Finally, let us hope that the weather is kind and allows us to have a full and successful season. Above all, win or lose, let’s enjoy this special game of ours and play it in the right spirit. i To quote an extract from a poem by Henry Grantland Rice, an early 20th century sports writer.
