Enrolment priorities are determined by the Ministry of Education June and schools must follow them. Schools take out-of-zone 15 School Production ‘Bye Bye enrolments if there is spare capacity or to balance Birdie’ Matinee (12:45pm- student numbers. The current order of priority for out-of-zone students is: 2:45pm, Hall)

1. Students accepted into a special programme (not applicable to 16-19 School Production ‘Bye Bye ) Birdie’ (7pm-9:30pm, Hall) 2. Siblings of current students 22 Year 10 Subject Information 3. Siblings of former students Evening (6pm-7:40pm, Hall) 4. Children of former students 23 Board Meeting 5. Children of board employees and board members (6pm-9pm, Boardroom) 6. All other students 24 Wearable Arts (Eye on Nature) For 2021, the college took approximately 30 out-of-zone students mainly Evening Show across priorities 2 to 4. 25 Parents’ Association Big Night A Taskforce review in 2019 found that the current priority group order Out – ‘Laugh Club’ heavily influenced the chances of an out-of-zone student being offered a (7pm-10pm, Hall) place at a school, meaning that for some students there were barriers for 28 Learn to Row Information accessing education. The categories should be ‘transparent, fair and Evening (7pm-8.30pm) equitable’. As such the Ministry is seeking feedback on three options for 29 Cultural Celebration Night prioritising out-of-zone students. (7pm-9pm, Hall) The first option is retaining the status quo. July The second option is to increase the priority of children of board employees 1 Wearable Arts (Showquest Toi) and board members to priority three, lower the priority of siblings of former Evening Show students, and remove the children of former students as a priority group. 1 Parents’ Association Meeting The third option is to retain current priority groups one and two, increase the (7pm-8pm, Boardroom) priority of children of board members and employees to priority three, and 2 Senior Music Performance hold an open ballot for all other applicants. Evening (7pm-9pm, Hall)

Each option has its strengths and weaknesses. Option 1 makes it difficult for 5 Art Exhibition (4pm-5pm, Hall) children with no connection to the college to be accepted, maintaining 6 Parents’ Information Evening – current inequalities. Options 2 and 3 impacts on schools with strong 2022 Enrolment Process (7pm- connections to former students and could undermine the community feel of 9pm, Library) a school over time. 6-7 Art Exhibition (Whole Day, If you are interested in finding out more, I have included a link to the relevant Hall) website. 9 End of Term 2 https://conversation.education.govt.nz/assets/ETAB-no-2/1250238- Appendix-2-Enrolment-priority-categories.pdf (For a full list of upcoming events, please visit the calendar on the college website.)

Tāne Mahuta’s Charity 2021 – Blind Low Vision NZ

Over the last few weeks, Tāne Mahuta’s Service Committee have been working hard to raise funds and increase awareness for ‘Blind Low Vision NZ’, a charity supporting people whose lives are impacted by blindness and impaired eyesight.

‘Blind Low Vision NZ’ are best known for their work in training guide dogs – you might have seen their four- legged friends out-and-about during the annual Red Puppy Appeal earlier this year.

Our first fundraiser was a contest where, for a gold coin donation, students predicted how many lollies were in a large, transparent jar. The closest guess came from two students who were just a couple of lollies off the correct answer – Kaan Aksu (13SIM) and Katelyn O’Hara (9RGS). As the winners, they had the pleasure of splitting all 174 lollies between them!

There was also a Mufti Day, which was well-supported by the student body. With each participant bringing in a gold coin, over $1,200 was instantly raised for the cause.

An inter-form class quiz helped to raise awareness about low vision as a national health issue (and test students’ general dog knowledge). This was followed by an engaging talk from Wendy, a guide dog walker, who brought along her adorable pooch.

Wendy discussed the importance of developing self-discipline in aspiring guide dogs, especially as they need to be able to ignore distractions (such as a ball bouncing in front of them) in order to look after their human in need. Attendants of this talk walked away with an increased appreciation for the vast intelligence that dogs possess.

If you would like to make an individual donation to ‘Blind Low Vision NZ’ and support their mission to provide all blind and vision-impaired New Zealanders with practical and emotional support, please visit the following link: https://blindlowvision.org.nz/get-involved/donate/

A very big thank you to everyone who supported ‘Blind Low Vision NZ’ this year.

‘Plugged In’ (Poem)

Last week, Jono Sayal (12NAI) delivered this spoken word poem at the school assemblies. It has been included in the newsletter not only because it is a great example of student writing, but also because of the message the poem is giving about our fixation on social media and the negative impact that this can have.

Mr Gordon Robertson, Principal

Plugged in, but where’s the light? Locked in, not knowing what’s outside, Boundaries of my knowledge, I wish to expand, I Google for answers in my digital wasteland.

My phone talks, to my washing machine, The Age of fuzzy logic and driverless limousines. I shut the door but the windows I open, Though linked to the world, my relationships are broken.

Web MD tells me I’m painfully isolated, I uber my eats, my payments are automated. Is someone listening? Is there someone to touch? Seems this touchscreen is my only crutch!

Please like my photo, please share my post! I seek followers or hunt people to roast. I forget all names, but hashtags I know I lost my friends, but my followers, they grow

To change the world and make it better, I created a presence on Facebook and Twitter. Social profiles now light my virtual playgrounds, But nothing has changed, and darkness abounds

One hundred channels, but nothing’s on! Watching mindless streams till half-past dawn. Digitally connected but physically alone, Did you also spend lockdown staring at a phone?

Did you promote social distancing? And all things that matter? With Facetime and Zoom or through web room chatter. From tactile manipulation of a handheld device The sore arms of a keyboard samurai is a heavy price.

Looking for an escape, like a runner in a maze, Minutes roll into hours, and hours into days, Fifteen open tabs, five different browsers Keep me surfing for hours upon hours.

World Wide Web, resplendent in its power, I am tangled, like Rapunzel, in the high tower. I get up to leave, only to stay longer, I feel so helpless, but the tech makes me stronger.

Technology Week

Technology Week comprised of a mix of challenges and events from the wide range of ‘Design’ and ‘Technology’ subjects that are available at Glendowie College. The aim of the week was to provide access for every student to explore the 21st century innovative opportunities, and to promote creativity and collaboration. Activities included cake decoration, making an app, and participating in an EPro 8 competition. Students were excited to have the opportunity to learn what the Technology Faculty offer throughout the week. Below are the snippets from some of the activities.

Virtual Reality Experience EPro 8 Challenge Problem Solving

Building Fastest Car Challenge 3D Printing Citymap

Cake Decoration Laser Cutting Key Rings

Student Feedback on ‘Making the App Challenge’ During the Technology week, I participated in the ‘Making an App Competition’. The goal was to code a ‘Hangman’ or ‘Countdown’ game to be more interesting or visually appealing, e.g. change the colour of the background or the font of the text. Although I had never done coding before, I found it really interesting and had a lot of fun learning about coding games. Language ‘Amazing Race’

On 15 April 2021, all Year 11 Language students took part in the inaugural Glendowie College Language ‘Amazing Race’. Language students of Chinese, German, Māori, Spanish and Te Kura went to the Auckland Museum to follow a series of clues and find things within the museum. The clues were written in the languages that they are learning at school. By combining their knowledge, they were able to work out what they meant and scour the museum looking for the answers to their clues. There were also other challenges such as taste testing, meme, and video creation, and teaching other group members phrases in their target languages. It was a wonderful day at the museum and our students took the opportunity to learn from each other and work together across a range of languages.

Auckland Writers Festival Secondary Schools Programme

On Wednesday 12 May, the 10 White, 10 Violet and 13 Scholarship English classes attended the ‘Auckland Writers Festival’s Secondary Schools Programme’ held in the Aotea Events Centre. We listened to four authors talking about how their works were created, and the effect they gave. This year, the authors discussed how their books reflected on the current social and political climate. Unfortunately, two of the speakers were unable to attend in person due to travel restrictions, so they had to video-call instead. The speakers were:

• Angie Thomas - the American author of ‘The Hate You Give’ • Dan Salmon - a New Zealand documentary maker and author of ‘Neands’ • Karlo Mila - a New Zealand poet of Pasifika heritage • Chloe Gong - the New Zealand author of ‘These Violent Delights’

It was ultimately a very interesting event with everyone enjoying the inspirational presentations. Thanks to Mrs van Ansem, Ms Harding, Miss Singh and Ms Gayton who made this exciting trip possible. We are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to have this experience.

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) 2021

On 28 and 29 May, four senior students attended the ‘Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA)’ at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. Along with 300 students from 42 other schools across the upper North Island, each representing a different country of the United Nations.

During the Assembly, we debated and presented speeches on current global issues, such as Covid-19 vaccine distribution, women's rights, the use of landmines, carbon emissions and the world food programme. We had to present with the best interests of our country in mind, as we believed they would at the United Nations. This year, Glendowie College was assigned Afghanistan and we chose to speak on the remits concerning women’s rights and fair distribution of Covid-19 vaccines. We spent the month prior to the event researching Afghanistan, writing and practising our speeches. One of the questions we were asked by other countries was ‘Why should Afghanistan people be given Covid vaccines if they are going to die in war anyway?’ After two days of educated discussion and debate, we were able to gain an insight into the role of the United Nations in international diplomacy and the diverse international circumstances of the world. Thank you to Ms Jones for helping us in our preparation for this event.

‘Spoken Word’ Competition

On 22 May 2021, a group of five students, Paneh Espiritu (12SHH), Emma Atterbury (9LAA), Jono Sayal (12NAI), Jorja Kane (11BLM) and Ava Franklin (13KSV) and Ryan Mehrabi Moghadam (absent) went to Mangere Bridge for the ‘Spoken Word’ Auckland-wide competition ‘Word: the Frontline’. In this regional heat, we performed in front of schools from around the , as well as a panel of judges. Schools such as De La Salle College, Tangaroa College, Wesley College, and many more were represented. The team performed extremely well, especially given our limited preparation time.

On 31 May, it was announced that Glendowie College had made it through to the semi-finals for the first time! The team will have to attend three upcoming workshops, where we will be paired with our own established poet/mentor. We are looking forward to writing, creating, perfecting and performing our pieces at the semi-finals coming up in a few months.

We would like to thank Action Education, who run the competition every year, and also a massive thank you to our lovely teachers, Mr Logan Reynolds and Ms Madeleine Blackmore, who inspired us to let our creativity flow from page to voice. We couldn't have done this without them.

13 Global Studies Wellington Trip

During May, two Year 13 Global Studies classes, accompanied by Ms Jones (the organiser of this fantastic trip), Mr Galt and Ms Sawyer, flew to Wellington for an action-packed trip. It was the first time the college had organised this trip and we were all very excited about it! We experienced the best parts of Wellington.

Our first stop was ‘Te Papa Museum’, a highlight of the trip. We spent time with an educator at the new exhibition, ‘Te Taio Nature’, which is an amazing exhibition celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique natural environment. This will help us to prepare for our internal where we will plan and carry out a social action for our future as kaitiaki of the unique New Zealand environment. That night we had free time to explore Wellington CBD with some of us going for a ride on the cable car to look over Wellington's gorgeous night views, while others explored ‘Welly’s’ renowned food options. The next morning, we headed to ‘Zealandia’, the world’s first fully fenced urban ecosanctuary. ‘Zealandia’ is home to some of New Zealand's most rare and extraordinary wildlife. The guides showed us a re-enacted video about how pests and non-native species came to New Zealand, and how Aotearoa has evolved into a place with buildings and people at a cost to our native plants and animals. This was a very interesting video to watch and really opened our eyes to what is happening here and to acknowledge and appreciate New Zealand's many amazing native and endemic species that we saw on our guided walk. Next stop was Parliament, which is a very informative and action- packed place to visit. This was the highlight of the trip for many of us, especially those who are looking to a future in politics. We spent time watching ‘Question Time’ in the ‘Debating Chamber’, and we saw several politicians including our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. We also met our local MP, Simon O’Connor, who took questions from us in the press conference room. Our last stop on our way back to the airport was ‘Weta Studio’, where we saw the props and sets from many of the movies which Weta Workshops has created.

We returned to Auckland exhausted, but very pleased that we had experienced the best of what our capital city has to offer. On behalf of both Year 13 Global Studies classes, we would like to give a huge thank you to Ms Jones for organising this amazing trip and making it the best it could be for us, and to Mr Galt and Ms Sawyer for coming along and making this such a great experience.

House Reading Challenge

On Monday 14 June, we will launch the ‘House Reading Competition | Wero Pānui’. Past winners of this illustrious challenge were Rūaumoko in 2019 and Tāne Mahuta who successfully came from behind to win in 2020.

The motto of this challenge is EVERY PAGE COUNTS! Students (and staff) need to keep track of how many pages they read over weeks 7, 8 and 9 of this term. At the end of each week, they will be asked to submit the number of pages they have read. Students can earn extra pages by reading a book from the ‘Challenge of the Week’ display in the library. Any book they read counts, from a comic book to a story to their younger siblings, to their favourite novel. Please encourage your child(ren) to participate, as every page counts.

Feature Auction Item To Be Auctioned During the ‘Laugh Club’ Performances

2020 Covid All Blacks Signed Jersey - Limited Edition

Our featured auction item is a ‘2020 Covid One of a Kind All Blacks Signed Jersey’. This item has been organised by Sara Haddon, our very own Glendowie College Parents’ Association Chairperson, via her friend and colleague at Ray White Maguires One Team, more specifically Hamish McKay, a well-known NZ broadcaster and presenter.

Hamish has generously donated this jersey which celebrates our national icon with players like all-time greats Sam Whitelock, Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett, along with captain Sam Cane and the new stars of world rugby Ardie Savea, Richie Mo’unga and Hoskins Sotutu.

A special one-of-a-kind item like this will secure a generous price, a reserve has been set, just like at Sara’s and Hamish’s Ray White auctions, hoping to reach a much higher price for our vendor - Glendowie College.

Further, if Hamish McKay and Sara Haddon list and sell a property together from (or referred) by any member of the Glendowie College community in the next 4 months, they will donate $4,000 per sale to the PA sound system fund.
