This week leads into the inaugural draft for the new National Volleyball League. It’s certainly a time of excitement and interest as VNZ launches the NVL with an online draft format for our top men’s and women’s athletes on Monday April 26th. Coaches are busy reviewing the over 200 athletes that have registered for the draft. With confirmed venues in Auckland (YMCA, Auckland Central) for June 26-27 and Christchurch (Pioneer Stadium) July 10-11, this is a marvellous opportunity for the NZ community to see top volleyball in our own country and I encourage those living close to those centres to support our athletes and the event in person.

The Board Team Talk newsletter for this year discusses the financials, strengthen and adapt, ongoing communication and governance.

At the end of February, the Board members were gathered in Auckland for what we hoped would be the first face to face meeting in well over a year. However, overnight Auckland moved to level 3 and Board members found themselves on early flights home the following morning. Health and Safety – including Covid-19 – continues to be a major responsibility for both Board and Staff. There is significant work for the staff to ensure that events are fully compliant with appropriate regulations and we acknowledge the work at regional and local events to ensure the health and safety of all participants. The Board (through the CE) also maintains vigilance in relation to the wellbeing of staff in this different work environment.

We are excited to announce that the new National Volleyball League (NVL) will be launched in late June/July! Four Men’s and Women’s teams representing the 4 zones across NZL will vie for the title of New Zealand National Volleyball League Champions.

On Monday 26th of April at 7:30pm the NVL Draft will be presented live on our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/volleyballnz/). The four teams (Northern Moana, Midlands Te Waiora, Central Hauwhenua and Southern Pounamu) will thrash it out for the title of the New Zealand National Volleyball League Champions. This event will be held over 2 amazing weekends with the first round of this event at the YMCA City Centre Auckland on the 26-27th June. The final round is taking place at Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch on the 10-11th July. Add it to your calendar and come and cheer the athletes on!

The first three rounds of the draft will see 'Marquee players' picked. These marquee players will be from the region they are selected for. The remaining players will then go into a national player 'pool', and the coaches will take turns in selecting players. This is a really exciting element, as it means our best players will get the chance to play with others they've never played with before. The draft on Monday will see each team select their first 9 players. The remainder of the draft will happen after IPC in Wellington. This means the players not selected will have one final chance to put their best foot forward at IPC, where our coaches will be watching, before the final selections are made on June 8th. https://www.volleyballnz.org.nz/national-volleyball-league E V E N T S U P D A T E
