What does that mean for our birdlife? Popular media dealing wind energy and its impacts on birds is fraught with conflicting messages. Are more birds killed by cats, cars and windows, or are wind turbines really a threat to our wildlife? BirdLife South Africa’s Birds and Renewable Energy Project Manager, Sam Ralston-Paton, helps unravel fact from fiction and discusses what can be done to make clean energy, greener. Saturday 13 February 2021 Linda van den Heever The Vulture Project – an overview After 15 years in the corporate world, Linda van den Heever resigned to pursue her passion for conservation and the natural world. She joined BirdLife South Africa in 2013 and has been in her current role as Vulture Project Manager since 2018. She represents BirdLife South Africa on the National Vulture Task Force, the National Wildlife Poisoning Prevention Working Group (NWPPWG), the National Lead Task Team (a working sub-group of the NWPPWG) and the Bearded Vulture Task Force. Her main responsibilities focus on the mitigation of lead poisoning in vultures, and the implementation of Vulture Safe Zones. Linda will give an overview of the current plight of our Southern African vultures. 61st Annual General Meeting followed Thursday 18 March 2021 WBC AGM and Rick Nuttall by Birds & Birding in the Memel Area At this meeting, the President and the Committee to hold office for the year 2021 will be elected. Please join us online for the AGM and celebrate with our winners of the annual Diamond Award and Bearded Vulture Award (in honour of the late Steven Piper). This will be followed by a talk on the Birds and Birding in the Memel area by Rick Nuttall. The Memel area combines grasslands with the Drakensberg Escarpment and contains populations of many of our endemic species of birds. Rick was based at the Bloemfontein Museum for a number of years and has extensive knowledge of this area which he will share with us. Diana has spent most of her professional life in education. She is passionate about enhancing all aspects of life and learning through story. Join Diana for an afternoon of storytelling – sit back, relax and let your imagination do the travelling. Facing the furnace: what does global Professor Andrew Thursday 20 May 2021 heating mean for Southern African McKechnie birds? Andrew McKechnie co-leads the Hot Birds Research Project (HBRP), a team of ornithologists spanning three South African universities, the South African National Biodiversity Institute and a network of overseas collaborators. The focus of the HBRP’s research programme is understanding the ways in which climate change is affecting birds and predicting the future impacts. This talk will provide an overview of the ways in which increasing temperatures are affecting southern Africa’s desert birds, and the changes we expect to see over coming decades. Climate change poses a substantial threat to our birdlife, with arid regions like the southern Kalahari likely to see substantial losses of avian biodiversity unless the current rapid pace of global heating is slowed. Page 2 of 12 DAY / WEEKEND OUTINGS AND COURSES Target Bird Challenge Target birds are not necessarily the most elusive, prettiest or rarest birds to be found. We encourage you to read up beforehand and get to grips with our nominated target birds; share your newly acquired knowledge with your fellow members and in this way, we all learn something new. Please note that the overall objective is to learn more and to have fun, therefore no prizes will be awarded for spotting the target bird on the day. 9 JANUARY 2021 / SATURDAY OUTING NORTHERN FARM NATURE RESERVE Northern Farm has a wide range of habitats with a number of dams and large expanses of grassland. • Important Note for the Media
LIST OF PRIVATE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROVIDERS THAT HAVE LODGED APPLICATIONS TO BE REGISTERD AS PRIVATE COLLEGES WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING [UPDATED ON 28 January 2020] IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THE MEDIA The Department of Higher Education and Training recognizes that the information contained in the List is of public interest and that the media may wish to publish it. In order to avoid misrepresentation in the public domain, the Department of Higher Education and Training kindly requests that the published list of Skills Development Providers that have lodged applications to be registered as private colleges be accompanied by the relevant explanatory information below. The List is available for inspection at: http://www.dhet.gov.za/Registers_DocLib/Register INTRODUCTION Section 29 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Constitution) provides that everyone has the right to establish and maintain at their own expense a private educational institution as long as the independent institution: (a) does not discriminate on the basis of race; (b) is registered with the State; and (c) maintains standards that are not inferior to standards comparable to public education institutions. Previously the private SDPs could not be registered with the Department because the Skills Development Act (SDA), 1998 (Act No. 97 of 1998), as amended, in its current form does not provide for registration of SDPs but requires them to be accredited in order to operate legally in South Africa. In order to fulfil the provision of Section 29(3) of the Constitution, a Joint Communiqué 1 of 2016: The Registration and Accreditation for Private Education Providers Offering Qualifications and Part-Qualifications on the Occupational Qualifications Sub- Framework was promulgated in October 2016.

MEGA PROJECT ANALYSIS: A CASE STUDY OF THE GAUTENG FREEWAY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT by Philip Parrock Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Political Science) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Prof. Janis van der Westhuizen March 2015 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za DECLARATION By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the sole author thereof (unless explicitly stated otherwise), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe and third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety, or in part, submitted it for obtaining any qualification Philip Parrock November 2014 Copyright © 2015 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT Mega projects have fascinated human beings for as long as history can remember. The urge to build something bigger and better than has ever been done before has always been a driving force behind the human race’s relentless pursuit of technological advancement. It is in this vein that mega projects have evolved over time, as methods of construction improved, so did the scale on which people could attempt new projects. The Channel Tunnel between England and France, the Hoover Dam in America and the Millau Viaduct in the French countryside are some of the biggest examples of infrastructure projects in the world and these are all unequivocally, mega projects. Costing at least $ 250 million and incorporating major technological challenges, mega projects continue to inspire and motivate artists and engineers alike.

ENSafrica | Africa’s largest law firm issue 65 | 2021-07 ENSafrica tax in brief Below, please find issue 65 of ENSafrica’s tax in brief, a snapshot of the latest tax developments in South Africa. case law Tax Court of South Africa I IEA Taxpayer v Commissioner for the South African Revenue Service ZATC [2021] Cape Town o The taxpayer (“Appellant”) appealed against the decision by the Commissioner for the South African Revenue Service (“SARS”) to disallow the Appellant from deregistering as a value-added tax (“VAT”) vendor, on the basis that the Appellant earned a fee for administering funeral policies on behalf of a long-term insurer (“insurer”). o The Appellant’s argument was that its business qualifies as a deemed financial service and thus the legislature intended that the fees earned by the Appellant fall outside the exclusions under section 2 of the VAT Act, 1991 (“VAT Act”). o The Tax Court considered, inter alia: . the terms of the agreement concluded between the Appellant and the insurer; . the definition of “financial service” under section 2 of the VAT Act; . the exemptions in section 12 of the VAT Act; and . Binding Private Ruling 34 (VAT) | Management of superannuation schemes: Long-term insurers. o The Tax Court held that the agreement concluded between the Appellant and the insurer makes it clear that the services performed by the Appellant are purely administrative ones for which the Appellant is paid a fee. The Appellant does not provide a long-term insurance policy. Accordingly, the activities of the Appellant cannot be deemed to be “financial services” for purposes of section 2 of the VAT Act.
