Baltimore drafted a third Valdosta HS baseball player, outfielder Colby Thomas, in the 37th round in 2019, but Thomas turned down the Orioles to attend college (in his case, Mercer University).

Speaking of Valdosta: The only Valdosta Wildcat to make the Major Leagues to date is Buck Coats, who played for the Chicago Cubs (2006), (2007) and Toronto Blue Jays (2008). Coats, coincidentally, played two full seasons with the Lugnuts, 2002 and 2003, totaling 265 games and 989 at-bats.

A Fun Georgia Southern Note: The Eagles’ most notable game in team history might have been on March 15, 2008, when they hit 14 home runs in a 26-8 victory over Columbia. In the eighth inning alone, the Eagle crushed five homers, including three consecutive shots by pinch-hitters. “I thought we took some good swings, and certainly conditions with the wind were right for it today, as well,” coach Rodney Hennon said afterward.
