Andover Deanery Churches North
HATHERDEN, Christ Church Christ Church was built in 1857. In 1975 the Churches in and church was struck by lightning and gutted by fire, around Andover leaving only the walls standing. When the church Town (North) was rebuilt, it was partitioned internally into two areas. An entrance vestibule that still has war memorial brasses in position on the west wall, and a main area for worship. The vestibule contains a memorial book with photographic records, and a tribute book with records of the donations given to the project. The main area is carpeted and the walls half panelled in light oak. There is a ceramic font made at the Aldermas- ton pottery. 40 ANCIENT HAMPSHIRE FORESTS AND THE GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THEIR GROWTH. ,; BY T. W, SHORE, F.G.S., F.C.S. If we examine the map oi Hampshire with the view of considering what its condition, probably was' at that time which represents the dawn of history, viz., just before the Roman invasion, and consider what is known of the early West Saxon settlements in the county, and of the earthworks of their Celtic predecessors, we can .scarcely fail to come to the conclusion that in pre-historic Celtic time it must have been almost one continuous forest broken only by large open areas of chalk down land, or by the sandy heaths of the Bagshot or Lower Greensand formations. On those parts of the chalk down country which have only a thin soil resting on the white chalk, no considerable wood could grow, and such natural heath and furze land as the upper Bagshot areas of the New Forest, of Aldershot, and Hartford Bridge Flats, or the sandy areas of the Lower Bagshot age, such as exists between Wellow and Bramshaw, or the equally barren heaths of the Lower Greensand age, in the neighbourhood of Bramshot and Headley, must always have been incapable of producing forest growths. The earliest traces of human settlements in this county are found in and near the river valleys, and it as certain as any matter which rests on circumstantial evidence, can be that the earliest clearances in the primaeval woods of Hampshire were on the gently sloping hill sides which help to form these valleys, and in those dry upper vales whicli are now above the permanent sources of the rivers. -

Early plans of having guest writers (both Mark PhiIlips and Harvey Smith have unfortunately just been snapped up by Horse & Hound) pin-ups etc., have I'm afraid, faIIen by the wayside so here goes but what about the good news I hear you ask yourselves well- Carol-e has agreed to stay on as Secretary, for t.he time belng so at least that department will- continue to run as efficiently rc 61t6r On t-o the nitty gritty. The Club's Annual General Meeting was held at The Weyhill Fair on Tuesday, 13th October. Twenty-f our: mernbers attendeC, f ehzer 'uhan last year however there was still plenty of discussion on a vari-ety of topics. Sam Hart, The Club's President was offered and accepted Honorary Membership of the Cl-ub as a token of his immense contribution over the years. Sue Bennett, who has worked extremely hard on the Committee for a long time has decided to step down in order to devote more time to building superb x-country courses and running events at Penton. Pippa Sarsfield-Hal1 has also resigned due to pressure of other commitments. -

Impacts of watercress farming on stream ecosystem functioning and community structure Shaun Cotter School of Biological and Chemical Sciences Queen Mary, University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London September 2012 1 Abstract. Despite the increased prominence of ecological measurement in fresh waters within recent national regulatory and legislative instruments, their assessment is still almost exclusively based on taxonomic structure. Integrated metrics of structure and function, though widely advocated, to date have not been incorporated into these bioassessment programmes. We sought to address this, by assessing community structure (macroinvertebrate assemblage composition) and ecosystem functioning (decomposition, primary production, and herbivory rates), in a series of replicated field experiments, at watercress farms on the headwaters of chalk streams, in southern England. The outfalls from watercress farms are typically of the highest chemical quality, however surveys have revealed long-term (30 years) impacts on key macroinvertebrate taxa, in particular the freshwater shrimp Gammarus pulex (L.), yet the ecosystem-level consequences remain unknown. Initial studies were at Europe’s largest watercress farm at St Mary Bourne, Hampshire, during the bioremediation of its complex wastewaters and changes to farm management practices. These widened to include larger scale spatiotemporal studies at other watercress farms. Detrimental ecological impacts at the start of the study were detected by the structural and functioning measures, but they did not respond to bioremediation. However, an increase in G. pulex abundance was detected, providing evidence of recovery in response to altered practices, which may be attributable to the cessation of chlorine use. The detrimental impacts were unique to the St Mary Bourne watercress farm and were not consistent across the other watercress farms in the study. -
