Tonight’s performance marks Jan Harrington’s final performance as an IU faculty member before his retirement from the school in August. Jan Harrington has been a faculty member of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1973. In 2005 he received the honor of being selected to be a Chancellor’s Professor of Music. During his entire tenure here, he has conducted the school’s University Singers, a select virtuoso of 32 singers which is the School of Music’s longest standing ensemble, as well as various orchestral concerts and on campus. For 10 years he was conductor of the Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, a group devoted to the performance of avant- garde vocal music with whom he performed over 120 new pieces from the avant-garde as well as classic 20th century works, including many world premieres. He is Chair of the Choral Department, teaches graduate conducting and acts as advisor to all the graduate choral conducting students. Harrington holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and from Indiana University, where he studied for his doctorate with Fiora Contino and Julius Herford. Before joining the faculty at Indiana University, he was director of choral activities at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma and a faculty member of the State University of New York at Fredonia. Three sabbatical leaves have allowed further orchestral studies at the London Philharmonic and London Symphony . He was a regular member of the faculty at the Aspen Choral Institute from 1979-1982 and has conducted at the Aspen Music Festival. He was co-founder and Music Director of Music Festival at Grey Towers, a professional chamber orchestra in Milford, PA, near New York City. He was a founder and faculty member of the Dartmouth Conducting Institute held summers at Dartmouth College. He has conducted for the Stockton (CA) and Roanoke Opera companies, recorded for Spectrum Records, and was on the editorial team for the 2nd edition of Choral Conducting: A Symposium published by Prentice-Hall. His conducting students hold positions throughout the United States and in 12 foreign countries. Harrington’s repertoire encompasses the great choral works of Byrd and Monteverdi, the of Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart and Verdi, and such 20th-century pieces as Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Stravinsky’s , and the Berio’s . His orchestra and opera experience includes music of the Baroque, Messiaen’s Turangalila-Symphony, Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1, performances of Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea and L’Orfeo, Gounod’s Faust, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Verdi’s La traviata, ’ Nixon in China, and major works of the orchestral repertoire. His orchestral and choral performances have been consistently noted for their inventive programming and communicative excitement. Carolina Castells, from Miami, FL, is currently a master’s student at the IU Jacobs School of Music. She received a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Miami, where she performed the roles of Pamina in The Magic Flute and Yum-Yum in The Mikado. With the IU Opera Theater, she has performed the roles of Emily Webb in Ned Rorem’s Our Town and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. This summer, she will be singing the title role of Susannah at the Brevard Music Center. She currently studies with Costanza Cuccaro. Kathryn Leemhuis, mezzo-soprano, is a graduate student at the IU Jacobs School of Music , studying with Professor Costanza Cuccaro. Her operatic roles include Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; Dritte Magd in Strauss’ Elektra with the Cleveland Orchestra; Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Tanglewood Music Center; Flora in Verdi’s La traviata, and Mrs. Hildebrand in Weill’s Street Scene at Opera of St. Louis; Dorabella in W. A. Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, and Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel and Gretel at the IU Jacobs School of Music; Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and Nancy in Britten’s Albert Herring at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Recently, Leemhuis performed as a soloist in The Marilyn Horne Foundation’s The Continues 2006 Festival in New York City. She won first place in the Opera Columbus Irma Cooper International Vocal Competition, and first place in the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition. Future engagements will find Leemhuis returning to the Tanglewood Music Center as Dorabella in W. A. Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, to Opera Theatre of St. Louis as Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in 2008, and as a featured soloist in the Sheldon Concert Hall Artist Recital Series 2008. Leemhuis is a native of Columbus, Ohio. Marc Schapman is currently completing a Doctor of Music at IU Jacobs School of Music. A native of Iowa, Schapman received his Bachelor of Arts from Luther College and his Master of Music from the Jacobs School of Music. His operatic roles include Des Grieux in Manon, Nelson Deadly in Too Many Sopranos, Carlo in Linda di Chamounix, Pheron in the world première of Thamos, King of Egypt, Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore, George Gibbs in the world première of Our Town, Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Spoletta in Tosca, Bardolpho in Falstaff, and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado. Schapman has won awards from the City Opera Company of the Quad Cities and the National Society of Arts and Letters. An active voice teacher, he is a member of the IU Chapter of Student NATS and The College Music Society. His scholarly activity includes an interest in the poetics of Robert Frost, which has turned his dissertation research towards the musical settings of Frost poetry. In the fall of 2007, Schapman will commence a tenure-track position as assistant professor of voice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Presently, Schapman coaches with Gary Arvin and is a student of Costanza Cuccaro. Austin Kness, originally from Cedar Rapids, IA, came to the IU Jacobs School of Music after receiving his B.A. in Music from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. His past credits with the IU Jacobs School of Music include the roles of The Unnnamed Bass in Too Many Sopranos, Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni, Escamillo in Carmen, and Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge. In 2005, Kness performed with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theater in the role of Morales in Carmen and in January of 2007 in the role of Fiorello in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. This coming Summer, he will return to the Des Moines Metropolitan Opera’s Apprentice Program where he will be covering Escamillo and singing the role of Morales in their production of Carmen. A third-year master’s student, Kness studies with Patricia Stiles.
