A Conductor's Guide to the Magnificat in C, Twv 9:17 By A CONDUCTOR’S GUIDE TO THE MAGNIFICAT IN C, TWV 9:17 BY GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN BY DAEKWANG KIM DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Choral Music in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Andrew Megill, Chair, Director of Research Teaching Assistant Professor Andrea Solya Associate Professor Barrington Coleman Assistant Professor Christopher Macklin ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate Georg Philipp Telemann’s Magnificat in C (TWV 9:17) and to create a guide for performance of the composition. The liner notes for the recording from 1964, acknowledge that “The Latin Magnificat in C is the more extended and elaborately scored of Telemann’s settings,” yet the work remains virtually unknown today. Thus, my thesis will shed light on this little-known work, while also preparing conductors and musicians to perform this rewarding piece. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and George Frideric Handel (1685– 1759), Telemann was one of the leading German composers and instrumentalists in the first half of the 18th century. He is regarded as a significant link between the late-Baroque and early- Classical styles, representing the galant style and the pre-classical style in Germany. He was also probably the first composer to write a viola concerto, which is the concerto in G major (TWV 51:G9). This study will be comprised of three major sections. First, I will present Telemann’s background information: his biographical information (Chapter One), his compositional style with special attention to the choral compositions (Chapter Two), and historical background and liturgical use of the Magnificat (Chapter Three). Secondly, I will analyze Telemann’s Magnificat in C using the manuscript of the work, a facsimile of which the University of Illinois Music and Performing Arts Library owns on microfiche, and the only edition of the piece, published in 1995 by Editions Armiane (Chapter Four). In my compositional analysis, I will consider various musical features, instrumentation, treatment of the texts, texture, harmony and rhythm, and other compositional devices. Third, I will compare several musical features of Telemann’s Magnificat ii in C to J. S. Bach’s Magnificat in D (BWV 243). I also consider two settings of German Magnificat, Meine Seele erhebt den Herren, by Telemann (TWV 9:18) and Bach (BWV 10) (Chapter Five). Finally, I will perform Telemann’s Latin Magnificat in C and German Magnificat (excerpts) as my research project recital. The performance of the Latin Magnificat in C is especially significant because it will possibly be the concert premiere of the work in America. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF MUSICAL EXAMPLES Johann Sebastian Bach Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243 Magnificat Quia respexit Quia fecit mihi magna Et misericordia eius Fecit potentiam Deposuit potentes Suscepit Israel Gloria patri Sicut erat in principio *** Chorus: S-S-A-T-B Soloists: Soprano 1, soprano 2, alto, tenor, bass Orchestra: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 oboes d'amore, 3 trumpets, timpani, strings, continuo ************************* Program notes by Martin Pearlman Bach, Magnificat, BWV 243 In 1723, for his first Christmas as cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Bach presented a newly composed setting of the Magnificat. It was a grand, celebratory work with a five-voice chorus and a colorful variety of instruments, and Bach expanded the Magnificat text itself by interpolating settings of several traditional Christmas songs between movements. This was the original Eb-major version of his Magnificat, and it was Bach's largest such work up to that point. About a decade later, he reworked the piece, lowering the key from Eb to the more conventional trumpet key of D major, altering some of the orchestration, and, perhaps most importantly, removing the Christmas inserts, so that the work could be performed at a variety of festivals during the liturgical year. It is this later D major version of the Magnificat that is normally heard today. Despite its brilliance and grandeur, Bach's Magnificat is a relatively short work. Nonetheless, it is filled with countless fascinating details. The tenor opens his aria Deposuit with a violent descending F# minor scale to depict the text "He hath put down [the mighty]". At the end of the alto aria Esurientes, Bach illustrates the words "He hath sent the rich away empty" by having the solo flutes omit their final note.

The German Cantata Before Bach In Germany, Lutheran composers adapted the genre that had originated in Italy as a secular work intended for aristocratic chamber settings. Defined loosely as a work for one or more voices with independent instrumental accompaniment, usually in discrete sections, and employing the ‘theatrical’ style of opera, the Italian cantata it was originally modest in scope—usually comprising no more than a couple of recitative-aria pairs, with an accompaniment of basso continuo. By the 1700s, however, it had begun to include other instruments, and had grown to include multiple, contrasting movements. Italian composers occasionally wrote sacred cantatas, though not for liturgical use. In Germany, however, Lutheran composers adapted the genre for use in the main weekly service, where it subsumed musical elements already present: the concerted motet and the chorale.

The St Matthew Passion was composed as to perform a single work from both organ lofts at the same time: Chorus and orchestra I would occupy the large organ loft, and Chorus and orchestra II performed from the small organ loft. Bach created particularly distinctive accompagnato recitatives in this work: they are accompanied not by continuo alone, but also by the entire string section of the first orchestra using long, sustained notes and "highlighting" certain words, thus creating an effect often referred to as Jesus's "halo".

  • The Sources of the Christmas Interpolations in J. S. Bach's Magnificat in E-Flat Major (BWV 243A)*
The Sources of the Christmas Interpolations in J. S. Bach's Magnificat in E-flat Major (BWV 243a)* By Robert M. Cammarota Apart from changes in tonality and instrumentation, the two versions of J. S. Bach's Magnificat differ from each other mainly in the presence offour Christmas interpolations in the earlier E-flat major setting (BWV 243a).' These include newly composed settings of the first strophe of Luther's lied "Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her" (1539); the last four verses of "Freut euch und jubiliert," a celebrated lied whose origin is unknown; "Gloria in excelsis Deo" (Luke 2:14); and the last four verses and Alleluia of "Virga Jesse floruit," attributed to Paul Eber (1570).2 The custom of troping the Magnificat at vespers on major feasts, particu larly Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost, was cultivated in German-speaking lands of central and eastern Europe from the 14th through the 17th centu ries; it continued to be observed in Leipzig during the first quarter of the 18th century. The procedure involved the interpolation of hymns and popu lar songs (lieder) appropriate to the feast into a polyphonic or, later, a con certed setting of the Magnificat. The texts of these interpolations were in Latin, German, or macaronic Latin-German. Although the origin oftroping the Magnificat is unknown, the practice has been traced back to the mid-14th century. The earliest examples of Magnifi cat tropes occur in the Seckauer Cantional of 1345.' These include "Magnifi cat Pater ingenitus a quo sunt omnia" and "Magnificat Stella nova radiat. "4 Both are designated for the Feast of the Nativity.' The tropes to the Magnificat were known by different names during the 16th, 17th, and early 18th centuries.

Transcription issues confronted in creating this edition include matters of performance practice, range, notational inconsistencies in the sources, and instrumental idiom. ii Acknowledgements Special thanks is given to the following people for their assistance with my document: my doctoral committee members, Professors James Pyne, whose excellent clarinet instruction and knowledge enhanced my performance and interpretation of these works; Lois Rosow, whose patience, knowledge, and editorial wonders guided me in the creation of this document; and Paul Robinson and Robert Sorton, for helpful conversations about baroque music; Professor Kia-Hui Tan, for providing insight into baroque violin performance practice; David F.
