Jan Harrington has been a faculty member of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1973. In 2005 he received the honor of being selected to be a Chancellor’s Professor of Music. During his entire tenure here, he has conducted the school’s University Singers, a select virtuoso choir of 32 singers which is the School of Music’s longest standing ensemble, as well as various orchestral concerts and opera on campus. For 10 years he was conductor of the Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, a group devoted to the performance of avant- garde vocal music with whom he performed over 120 new pieces from the avant-garde as well as classic 20th century works, including many world premieres. He is Chair of the Choral Department, teaches graduate conducting and acts as advisor to all the graduate choral conducting students. Harrington holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and from Indiana University, where he studied for his doctorate with Fiora Contino and Julius Herford. Before joining the faculty at Indiana University, he was director of choral activities at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma and a faculty member of the State University of New York at Fredonia.
