PRICE LIST OF MARINE SPECIMENS.

HE following list contains a selection of the more common forms of T marine and plants which occur in the neighbourhood of Plymouth, and are suitable for laboratory work and for museums. Preserved specimens are usually in stock, and can then be forwarded immediately on receipt of order; the prices quoted are for such specimens. Living specimens will generally be charged at the same rate as preserved specimens, but when delivery is required on a particular day an extra charge may be made, according to the additional labour involved. All orders are attended to as promptly as possible; but when fresh specimens are required a delay is often unavoidable, owing to uncertainty of weather, or to scarcity of animals at the particular season. It should be stated, in ordering, whether the specimens are required for museums, dissection, or histological work. The prices include spirit in the case of preserved specimens, and glass tubes for all small ones. Hampers, barrels, packing-cases, bottles, jars and tins will be charged for. Hampers and barrels may be returned, and will be allowed for in full, if not damaged. Small parcels are forwarded by Parcel Post; large packages by goods train in the case of preserved specimens, by passenger train for living ones. Special attention will be paid to orders for rare animals and plants, and stages in their development. The list of Algoe contains specimens most suitable for laboratory work, preserved to show their various reproductive stages and other special features. A list of papers dealing with special groups, and supplying the information on the fauna and flora hitherto published by the Association, is given below. Cheques should be made payable to the Marine Biological Association, and all communications addressed to THE DIRECTOR, THE LABORATORY, CITADEL HILL, PLYMOUTH.

rpHE ASSOCIATION m founded at a Matting called for the pupoM in March, 1884, •*• and held in the Rooms of the Royal Society or London. The late Professor HUZLCT, at that time President of the Royal Society, took the ehair, and amongst the ipeaken in eupport of the project wen the late Duke of AROTLL, the late Sir LTOR PLAYTAIR, Lord AVIRORY, Sir JOHI» HOOKER, the late Dr. CARPKNTM, Dr. GtiHTHKR, the laU Lord DALBOUHIK, the late Profetaor MoeM.iv, the late Mr. ROMANES, and Profeeeor LAKKBSTBB. The Association owes its existence and its present satisfactory condition to a combina- tion of scientific naturalists, and of gentlemen who, from philanthropic or practical reasons, are specially interacted in the great sea fisheries or the United Kingdom. It is universally admitted that onr knowledge of the habits and conditions of life of sea fishes is very small, and insufficient to enable either the practical fisherman or the Legislature to take measures calculated to ensure to the country the greateet return from the " harvest of the sea." Naturalist* an, on the other hsnd, anxions to push further our knowledge of marine life and its conditions. Hence, the Association has erected at Plymouth a thoroughly efficient Laboratory, when naturalists may study the history of marine animals and plants in genera], and when, in particular, researches on food fishes and molluscs may be carried out with the beat appliances. The Laboratory and Its nttings wen completed in June, 1888, at a cost of some £12,000. Since that time investigation*, practical and scientific, hare been constantly pursued at Plymouth. Practical inTsetigatioos upon matter* connected with sea-fishing an carried on under the direction of the Council; in addition, naturalists from England and from abroad have come to the Laboratory, to carry on their own independent researches, snd have made valuable additions to toological and botanioal science, at the expense of a small rant for the use of a working table in the Laboratory and other appliances. The number of naturalists who can be employed by the Association in special investigations on fishery question*, and definitely ntaiaed for the purpose of carrying on those researches throughout the year, most depend on the innds subscribed by private individuals and public bodies for the pnrpo—• Th« firstcbarga * on tba reranue of the Association an tha working of the ••»- water circulation in the tanks, stocking the tanks with fish and feeding the latter, the payment of servants and fishermen, the bin and maintenance of fishing boats, and the salary of tha Resident Director sad 8taff. At the commencement of this number will be found the names of the gentlemen on the staff. In no ease does any one salary exceed £260. The Association has received some £31,000, of which £15,000 has been granted by the Treasury. The annual revenue which can be at present counted on is about £1,820, of which £1,000 a yew is granted by the Treasury, the remainder being principally made np in subscriptions. The admirable Marine Biological Laboratory at Naples, founded and directed by Dr. Dohrn, has cost about £20,000, including steam launchee, Ac., whilst it has an annual budget of £7,000. The purpose of the Association is to aid at the same time both science and industry. It is national in character and constitution, and its affairs are conducted by a representative Council, by an Honorary Secretary and an Honorary Treasurer, without any charge upon it* funds, so that the whole of the subscription* and donations received an devoted absolutely to the rapport of the Laboratory and the prosecution of researches by aid of its appliances. The reader is referred to page 4 of the Cover for information as to membership of the Association,
