Weights: 3yo 126lb; 4yo+ 128lb. Allowances: fillies and mares about 3.3lb. Total Prize Money (EUR) €300,000 1st €171,420, 2nd €68,580, 3rd €34,290, 4th €17,130, 5th €8,580. (8 Starters) Overseas Expert Column by Wally Pyrah An all-star cast includes wonder mare GOLDIKOVA –winner of 14 Group 1’s – and considered the best equine female in world. The Freddie Head trained mare will be an odds-on favourite to provide back-to-back victories in a race she dominated twelve months ago. Connections took a gamble when they ran her on unsuitably soft ground over 1600mtrs in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August and paid the price. The wonder-filly was caught close home by IMMORTAL VERSE with Italian rival WORTHADD back in 9th place. Back to her optimum trip and favoured fast ground possibly, GOLDIKOVA will take a lot of beating. UK challenger DREAM AHEAD steps up in trip from 1200mtrs following two Group 1 victories in the ultra-competitive July Cup at Newmarket, and Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock. Trainer David Simcock has always believed he is capable of winning over 1400mtrs plus and here will be his chance to prove it. Irish trained challenger BEWITCHED is an interesting challenger. Following her 1400mtrs success over Group class ZOFFANY in Ireland in May, the DANSILI filly subsequently disappointed when made favourite for the Golden Jubilee over 1200mtrs at Royal Ascot in June.

(8 Starters) Overseas Expert Column by Wally Pyrah There is no such thing in horse racing as a certainty but in the mythical winged horse Pegasus called FRANKEL we may have one. Sir Henry Cecil’s horse who is rated the best horse in the world by the international ratings, has an unblemished record of eight wins from eight races. He stamped his superstar status when destroying Royal Ascot winner CANFORD CLIFFS, RIO DE LA PLATA and RAJSAMAN in a blink of an eye in the Sussex Stakes in July. Maybe the only thing that can beat him is he has had a long season, being on the go since April. Still FRANKEL looked in top form last weekend when beating his pacemaker BULLET TRAIN by 15 lengths in his final warm-up gallop at Newmarket. So who is going to give him a race? EXCELEBRATION has twice seen the backend of FRANKEL this season, but has nevertheless improved enormously in the last couple of months. He ran away with the Group class Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and then appeared equally impressive when routing opposition including RIO DE LA PLATA and RAJSAMAN over 1600mtrs in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

  • Carroll Finds Success, Stability in New Role
SUNDAY, 7 JANUARY 2018 CARROLL FINDS SUCCESS, THE EAGLE DIGS DEEP FOR THIRD L'ORMARINS QUEEN'S PLATE by Liesl King STABILITY IN NEW ROLE In front of a large blue-and-white attired crowd, Legal Eagle (SAf) (Greys Inn) produced probably the best and most heart stopping victory of his career to win the R1.5-million G1 WFA L'Ormarins Queen's Plate S. over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday. It was Legal Eagle's third straight victory in the race, and while their hearts may have been in their mouths, the crowd cheered their favourite home. The early part of the race was uneventful as Legal Eagle with Anton Marcus in the saddle, slotted in on the rail from barrier two. From barrier nine, Corne Orffer was forced to bring Captain America (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) out wide, making his way around the field, before slipping in on the rail in front of Legal Eagle. Knowing Captain America is not blessed with a sprint finish, Orffer wasted no time idling in front and sent the strapping bay for home. With a quickly lengthening gap aided by an unusual tailwind, Anton Marcus had no choice but to give David Carroll | Coady photography chase and Legal Eagle was forced to dig deep as he chased down his old nemesis. By Bill Finley Racing for the first time in the yellow and purple silks of Braam His father, his brother and his nephew all turned out to be top van Huyssteen, William Henderson and Hedley McGrath, Legal riders, but David Carroll just wasn=t blessed with the jockey Eagle was closing the gap, but due to the fast pace, it was not as gene.
