Overseas Expert Column by Wally Pyrah

An all-star cast includes wonder mare –winner of 14 Group 1’s – and considered the best equine female in world. The Freddie Head trained mare will be an odds-on favourite to provide back-to-back victories in a race she dominated twelve months ago. Connections took a gamble when they ran her on unsuitably soft ground over 1600mtrs in the at Deauville in August and paid the price. The wonder-filly caught close home by with Italian rival WORTHADD back in 9th place. Back to her optimum trip and favoured fast ground possibly, GOLDIKOVA will take a lot of beating.

UK challenger steps up in trip from 1200mtrs following two Group 1 victories in the ultra-competitive at Newmarket, and Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock. Trainer David Simcock has always believed he is capable of winning over 1400mtrs plus and here will be his chance to prove it.

Irish trained challenger BEWITCHED is an interesting challenger. Following her 1400mtrs success over Group class ZOFFANY in Ireland in May, the filly subsequently disappointed when made favourite for the Golden Jubilee over 1200mtrs at Royal Ascot in June. She then finished eighth, beaten six lengths by DREAM AHEAD in the Betfred Sprint Cup, but can be forgiven from that performance, as she had a far from trouble-free passage and is clearly better than that. Her recent comfortable success in the Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh, indicates she is back to her best, and she rates a decent each-way proposition.

Italian hope WORTHADD may have disappointed at Deauville but that was the first time he had finished out of the frame in a dozen races – winning eight times. Another local French favourite MARCHAND D’OR maybe getting on in years but he has a dozen career wins and has been consistent over today’s 1400mtrs distance.
