Hortle* and Somphone Phommanivong** We record the first capture from Laos of the diadromous eel-tail catfish Plotosus canius as a single specimen of total length 1111 mm from Phapheng Channel, which is the most easterly anabranch of the Mekong in the Khone Falls system in southern Laos. The capture location is about 2.5 km downstream of Phapheng Waterfall and about 2.1 km upstream of the Cambodian border with Laos. As the location is about 720 km from the sea and at least 500 km upstream of any possible saline influence, this record shows that some large individuals of this diadromous species, which breeds in brackish waters, may penetrate long distances into freshwaters, where they feed on crabs and molluscs. LANZING1 ABSTRACT: Three marine species of Plotosidae are found along the coastlines of the Indian and Pacific oceans, but the other 25 species occur exclusively in the Australian region. The majority of the Plotosidae are freshwater inhabitan ts, some of which are indigenous to both Australia and N ew Guinea. Methodology: Samples were collected on a monthly basis from fishermen during the full moon between January and December, 2012. Results: The overall annual sex ratio was 1: 0.98 (males: females). The annual GSI variation indicated a long distinct breeding period from April to September; with major breeding activity between May and June. The length range of males at sexual maturity was 44 - 48 cm (mid length, 46cm) total length and that of the females was 40 - 44 cm (mid length, 42 cm) total length. -

Article History: Received 21st Feb,2014, Accepted 28th Feb,2014,Published 26th March,2014 ABSTRACT Catfishes, member of the order Siluriformes, are representative venomous fishes having venom glands in dorsal and pectoral spines that are locked into place when threatened. A certain Plotosus canius toxin is lethal and cardiotoxic, having neuromuscular blocking activity, envenomation causes immediate, local and intense pain, soft tissue edema, and a variable extent of bleeding. The present study carried out on studies on biological properties and in silico approach for Plotosus canius. The crude was extracted with saline and it is screened for antimicrobial properties and was tested against 6 pathogenic bacteria and 5 pathogenic fungi. The result of present investigation reported that mucus extract displayed significant antimicrobial activity. The toxic activities of crude extracts were then determined by hemolytic activities in chick, goat, and human blood erythrocytes. The result reported that mucus extracts showed a moderate hemolytic activity in chick and goat and no activity was recorded in human erythrocytes. Particularly, a previously isolated Plotosus canius protein (NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 4) was characterized and reported to have proton and sodium ion transport in the electron transport chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane. -

Abstract: Fish venoms can be lethal for Vertebrates. The venomous fishes have been recognized for many years; however scientific investigators have finding the pharmacological importance of fish toxin. Nearly 1200 species of marine fish are venomous and they account for two third of the population of venomous vertebrates. Fish venoms are focused as a potential source of pharmacological agents and physiological tools that have evolved to target vital processes in the human body that appear to have more electivity than many drugs. In the present review focused the exploration and importance of venomous from certain fishes. Index Terms - Fish Toxin, Exploration, Pharmacological Importance, Toxicology. I. INTRODUCTION Poisonous organisms are represented in many taxa, including kingdom Animalia. During evolution, animals have developed special organs for production and injection of venoms. Animal venoms are complex mixtures, compositions of which depend on species producing venom. The most known and studied poisonous terrestrial animals are snakes, scorpions and spiders. Among marine animals, these are jellyfishes, sea anemones and cone snails. The toxic substances in the venom of these animals are mainly of protein and peptide origin. Recent studies have indicated that the single venom may contain up to several hundred different components producing diverse physiological effects. Bites or stings by certain poisonous species result in severe envenomations leading in some cases to death. This raises the problem of bite treatment. -

Penelitian beberapa aspek biologi ikan sembilang dilakukan pada bulan April sampai Juli 2007. Contoh ikan diperoleh dari nelayan yang menangkap dengan alat tangkap belad dan rawai dasar. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan ratio kelamin jantan terhadap betina yaitu 1:2. Organisme yang ditemukan dalam saluran pencernaan terdiri atas lima jenis yaitu potongan kepiting, udang, ikan, cacing, dan keong, sehingga ikan sembilang dapat digolongkan sebagai ikan karnivora. Pola pertumbuhan ikan sembilang bersifat isometrik (b=3), berarti pertumbuhan panjang seiring dengan pertumbuhan bobot. Kelompok ukuran panjang ikan sembilang tertangkap didominansi oleh ukuran panjang antara 25,1-30,1 cm. By: Khoirul Fatah and Asyari Eeltailed catfish (Plotasus canius) is one of the fish resources in the estuarine waters of Banyuasin South Sumatera. Research on some biological aspect of Plotosus canius was conducted from April to July 2007. Fishes were caught by fishermen using barrier traps and bottom long line. The results show that the sex ratio of male to female was 1:2. Organisms found in the digestive tract consists of five types crabs, shrimp, fish, worms, and snails. -

Abstract Barumun River has a wide variety of high fish species, the type of fish that occupies the waters of Barumun River is gray eel catfish (Plotosus canius). Data on the bioecology of gray eel catfish in the waters of Barumun River is not examined. This happens because the level of issuance related to fish bioecology is very minimal in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the data is needed by some people for information and handles in knowing the condition of fish populations. This study aims to find out the growth pattern and sex ratio of gray eel catfish in Barumun River. This type of research is explorative. Fish sampling observation station is determined by purposive sampling method. Fishing is done once every 1 month using bubu fishing equipment and fishing rods. Furthermore, fish that have been caught are measured in total length and weight, as well as identified sex. Data processing using Microsoft Excel 2010 application programs. The results of the study of fish growth patterns at 3 stations were negative allometrics with value of W = 21.37L 0.0471. Sex ratio of male gray eel catfish (50.94%) and females (49.06%). MBP PHASE 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY NISC Executive Summary Prepared by the National Invasive Species Council On March 7th, 2007 the U.S. Department of Navy (DoN) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an “Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (OEIS)” for the “Relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Forces to Guam, Enhancement of Infrastructure and Logistic Capabilities, Improvement of Pier/Waterfront Infrastructure for Transient U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) at Naval Base Guam, and Placement of a U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Task Force in Guam”. This relocation effort has become known as the “build-up”. In considering some of the environmental consequences of such an undertaking, it quickly became apparent that one of the primary regional concerns of such a move was the potential for unintentional movement of invasive species to new locations in the region. Guam has already suffered the eradication of many of its native species due to the introduction of brown treesnakes and many other invasive plants, animals and pathogens cause tremendous damage to its economy and marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. DoN, in consultation and concurrence with relevant federal and territorial regulatory entities, determined that there was a need to develop a biosecurity plan to address these concerns. -
