He’d been crowned The King of Pop. He’d already released the world’s best selling album, which also earned a record-breaking eight Grammys during one show. If someone had asked him that same question little more than a decade later, what would he have replied? Reflecting on the dramatic twists and turns his life had taken, he may have reminded us that he knew he was talented. He knew he was flawed. And he realized that he was only human. Until his sudden passing at the young age of 50, Michael and the world may have forgotten that he was just a man. Much like Michael Jackson, the legends or icons we revere are not born into wealth or fed from birth with a silver spoon. They come from families filled with regular folk who work at ordinary jobs in the hopes of keeping food on the table. What is it that drives the artists and performers we idolize? Is it a need to stand out and showcase their individuality? Is it the obligation to make good of the gifts that have been bestowed upon them? From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

    Analyzing the Spotify Top 200 Through a Point Process Lens Michelangelo Harris, Brian Liu, Cean Park, Ravi Ramireddy, Gloria Ren, Max Ren, Shangdi Yu, Andrew Daw, and Jamol Pender∗ School of Operations Research & Information Engineering Cornell University, Ithaca, NY October 4, 2019 Abstract Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts. For the current generation, one of the most relevant pop charts is the Spotify Top 200. Spotify is the world's largest music streaming service and the Top 200 is a daily list of the platform's 200 most streamed songs. In this paper, we analyze a data set collected from over 20 months of these rankings. Via exploratory data analysis, we investigate the popularity, rarity, and longevity of songs on the Top 200 and we construct a stochastic process model for the daily streaming counts that draws upon ideas from stochastic intensity point processes and marked point processes. Using the parameters of this model as estimated from the Top 200 data, we apply a clustering algorithm to identify songs with similar features and performance.
