10 SMILE PROJECT Smile Hospital Project

GENESIS:

Smile- Society Making Impellent Living Efforts-- is a voluntary Social Welfare Organisation registered under West Bengal Societies Registration ACT having Registration No. S-69044 of 1991-92.

SMILE started functioning in 1991 with Dr. Devi Shetty, the then Chief Cardiac Surgeon of B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkata as the Chief Advisor. Subsequently on his going to Bangalore a New Advisory Board was formed.

A litlle glittering child all on a sudden was detected a congentital heart disease . There was no such facility here in West Bengal for Children Heart Surgery at that time i.e during the year 1990-91. The parents of the Child was so poor that they even could not arrange their sqare meal to survive. Father was a Rickshaw puller and mother was maid-servant. Incidentally , the parents approached before a Person who was a Bank Employee . Having seen plight of the parents and the little child , he could not keep himself aside . He narrated the entire matter to some like minded persons and they all in together started to collect fund for her Surgery. Funds were arranged and operation was done but due to delay to get operated due to paucity of Fund, the little child left this world with a grieved heart that we could not show him the beauty of this world .

The Persons who tried their level best for the child’s operation, they were pained and therefore sworn that henceforward they will not allow any child to leave this world who will be suffering from congenital heart disease. Thus they formed an Organisation under which banner they started their journey without knowing the destination.

From 1991- they have organised many Health Check up Camps for the children and and child found suffering from congenital heart disease was screened and got operated and take the task of bearing the expenditure of post operative care. Till the year of 2005- 2006 since inception they have got operated about 120 heart Surgeries of Children.

While organising Camps they experienced that people in semi-urban & rural areas need follow up treatment which is not possibile for SMILE. Therefore they were in search of a land where a small type of hospital can be set up.

Belgharia Vivekananda Sevasadan which is also working in the field of Health care with permanent nature , approached before SMILE to extend their full support to them so that the hospital can be set up and move jointly . Smile did not think twice to their proposition and jumped into action to give a shape of a full fledged Primaly Level Rural Type Hospital

11 SMILE PROJECT Smile Hospital Project

The concept of this hospital is small in size but bigger in hospitality, fellow-feeling and with human touch where Patient-Doctor relationship will be as like as relative / friend but will be compact in nursing. Where also primary level in-patient /out-patient Treatment to be rendered to the "have –not class" without or with nominal charges and with moderate and economical Charges to the "have class " in order to create surplus for sustenance as we believe until self generation will be continuing, the organisation’s survival remain at stake.

Their long cherished dream is now gradually on the way of materialization with hindrances on every step but strong will and determination is leading them to overcome the hurdles with the assistance of like-minded ,philanthropic and benevolent persons who are always inspiring behind the screen.
