AHA MEMBERSHIP CARDS & HORSE REGISTRATION PAPERS: Copies of AHA membership cards and horse registration papers are not required to be sent with your entry this year since the software is linked to the AHA website. Please make certain you have given correct numbers. Remember to include the prefix (1A, for example) to Half-Arabian numbers and if Canadian registered, CAHR or CPAR. AMATEUR relationship to horse owner line on the entry is important; especially when the last name is different. Please complete it if showing in AAOTR, AOTR, or JOTR classes. COVID-19 POLICIES: Please read and comply with all COVID-19 PROTOCOLS AT THIS SHOW: PAGES 3-5, 26-27. ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL: The trainer, rider/handler, grooms and one parent for a minor child are allowed on the grounds. Each trainer is to complete and email with entries, the list found on page 27. ENTRY FORMS: The front and back (except signature lines) of the entry form and other forms are in a fillable format. Tab through the fields and fill in the requested information on your computer, save, print and send as usual. Please remember to sign the back of the entry form where required before mailing. Make sure, whether using a PC or Mac, you have the appropriate Adobe program (free) and have updated it. Emailed entries are preferred. If you must snail mail, please contact Pat at [email protected] or 253-279-6722. Required forms for a complete entry are: Entry form – front and back, USEF Covid-19 Release, Region 5 Covid-19 Release, Essential Personnel form, and Stabling Form if multiple horses. FARM AND BUSINESS NAMES (AHA) can be used only if it is the owner appearing on the horse’s registration papers. In that case, the farm or business must be a business member of AHA and a copy of the card enclosed. FUTURITIES: The Performance Futurity Rules and Entry Form are on pages 16 & 17. The Jackpot Halter Futurity Rules and Entry is on page 18. Both require entry and payment in addition to entering the Region 5 Championship Show. LIMITING OF ENTRIES: Due to Covid-19 restrictions by the state of WA, at this date 7/23/20, we must limit the number of horses we can accept. Entries will be accepted on a First Come/First Served basis in compliance with USEF rules regarding limiting entries. Date of submission via email or postmark will be used. Our OPEN date is July 29 and our CLOSE date is August 5. Do not email or postmark prior to July 29. Once our limit is reached, a waiting list will be established. If restrictions are lifted, we will accept additional entries in the order they were received. If questions, contact Pat: 253-279-6722 or email [email protected]. PAYMENT OF ENTRIES: By personal check or PayPal (Friends & Family) and must be made on the date the entry is submitted. If Friends/Family is not used, we will pass on any charges made to us by PayPal. If paying by check, the postmark must be on the date the entry was emailed or included with a snail mailed entry. RV SPACE RESERVATIONS are to be made on your entry form. SHAVINGS will be sold by the bag at this facility. Stalls will have approximately one bag of bulk shavings when you arrive. The shavings shed will be open as follows for pick up of shavings bags: Tuesday 8 AM – 8 PM. Wednesday through Friday 7 AM – 9 AM. Shavings are to be paid for on initial entry or in the show office during the show. SPECTATORS are not allowed this year. The stands will be closed. USEF SAFE SPORT TRAINING: As of January 1, 2019, if you are a USEF competing member 18 years of age or older you are required to take the core Safe Sport Training within 30 days of activating your membership. Take the Safe Sport Training at www.usef.org by logging into your member account. Please make sure your yearly refresher course has been taken if due by the show dates. USEF FARM/BUSINESS OWNERS: Effective with the 2020 competition year, if your horse shows under the ownership of a farm or other business entity, the farm or business entity must be recorded with USEF or you must pay a Show Pass Fee of $45 per show to participate in a USEF licensed competition. If using a Show Pass, the horse is not eligible for USEF points, awards, etc. Region 5 Championship Show High Point Amateur/Junior Program Here are some highlights but be sure to go to www.regionv.com for detailed information! A Champion & Reserve Champion will be named in each of the following four categories: Adult Amateur ~ Junior Exhibitor 13 & Under ~ Junior Exhibitor 14 – 18 ~ Walk/Trot Every exhibitor and horse will be tracked in the specific age groups. It will be your responsibility to provide the correct rider/handler and horse information on your original entry form as no changes will be made after the fact. All classes shown in will count.     Who Are the Plain Anabaptists? What Are the Plain Anabaptists? -- Anderson Who Are the Plain Anabaptists? What Are the Plain Anabaptists? Cory Anderson1 OSU Presidential Fellow and Doctoral Candidate in Rural Sociology School of Environment and Natural Resources The Ohio State University Abstract: I define the plain Anabaptists by answering two essential questions: “Who are the plain Anabaptists” and “What are the plain Anabaptists?” In asking “Who are the plain Anabaptists?” I investigate several dimensions of identity. First, I trace the history of seven religious traditions within Anabaptism: the Swiss Brethren/Mennonites, the Low German/Russian Mennonites, the Hutterites, the Amish, the Brethren, the Apostolic Christian Churches, and the Bruderhof. Second, I explore three categories of people in each group—mainline, conservative, and Old Order—describing the last two as “plain.” Third, I explore scales and indices on which plainness is measured, as well as other measures of who the plain Anabaptist people are. In asking “What are the plain Anabaptists?” I define several ways social scientists conceptualize and describe the plain Anabaptists. I organize the sundry definitions and frames under three categories: the plain Anabaptists as a religious group, as an ethnicity, and as a social system.     "Horse and Buggy Days" Carroll County Times article for 22 June 1997 By Jay A. Graybeal Prior to the advent of the automobile in the early twentieth century, horses provided most of the private transportation for local residents. Nearly every household possessed a horse and buggy or a farm wagon which was used to transport the family around the county. A sleigh was used when snow and ice covered the roads. Horse drawn vehicles were generally reliable and safe, however, accidents were not uncommon. The following article from the 19 May 1883 issue of the Westminster Democratic Advocate newspaper describes several mishaps: "An unusual number of accidents have occurred in this county within the past ten days, persons in nearly every case being more or less hurt by runaway horses. Last Sunday Miss Kate Lloyd and her brother attended service at Stone Chapel, near Warfieldsburg. After the morning service Miss Lloyd was sitting in the buggy, and her brother was preparing to feed the horse. After taking off the bridle, and before a halter could be put on, the animal ran off, upsetting the buggy and throwing the young lady against a tree, cutting a gash several inches long over the right eye and bruising one of her lower limbs. The same animal got frightened at a train of cars at Finksburg about four weeks previous and ran off, throwing Scott Lloyd from the carriage and cutting the back of his head severely. Dr. James P. Summers attended both cases. On Monday last, whilst the North Pleasant Valley Band was playing opposite the Marsh House, this city, the horse of Mr.

Weirsdale, FL: Equine Heritage Institute, 2015. • For 6,000 years, horses have been helping humans transport their goods from place to place. Carriages, wheeled vehicles like wagons and carts have been around throughout the world for nearly as long, shortly after the invention of the wheel. • The term “Buggy” was a phrase used in colonial America for a simple, wheeled, horse-drawn vehicle that was designed for short-distance personal transportation and was light and easy to build. “At the time, horseback riding in towns and rural areas was less common and required more specific skills than driving a buggy” according to Wikipedia. A buggy could be bought for between $25 and $50 in the 1800s, and numerous small companies produced them. The proliferation of buggies encouraged the development of better rural roads and paving of streets in towns and commercial districts (Wikipedia). • Many buggies were initially open to the air, but soon designers added covers such as hoods and sunroofs (“Surrey with the Fringe on Top”) allowing all-weather transportation. The manufacture of buggies and their parts contributed to a thriving business in carriage manufacture that paralleled the rise of the Industrial Revolution in Europe and America. • Today, buggies are still used in many parts of the world that can still sustain the care and feeding of horses. In the U.S., the Amish and Mennonite sects use horse and buggy transportation as part of their religious beliefs of avoiding the worldly ways of the “English” (modern-day American culture and capitalism).

    Plain, Fancy and Fancy-Plain: The Pennsylvania Dutch in the 21st Century Rian Linda Larkin Faculty Advisor: Alex Harris Center for Documentary Studies December 2017 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Rian Linda Larkin 2017 Abstract In 1681, William Penn traveled to Europe’s Rhineland-Palatinate and invited Anabaptist and Protestant groups to live and worship freely in Pennsylvania. Over the next century, 111,000 German- speaking men and women sailed to America, many settling in southeastern Pennsylvania.1 During this period, English-speaking residents began to use the term, “Pennsylvania Dutch” to describe the new settlers who spoke Deitsch or Deutsch (German). Today, the term Pennsylvania Dutch conjures visions of bonnets, beards, suspenders and horse- drawn buggies. However, this imagery only applies to the Old Order Anabaptist sects, which constitute less than half of Pennsylvania’s total PA Dutch population.2 3 Therefore, this project will examine and document four Pennsylvania Dutch communities in order to present a more accurate cultural portrait and contextualize the Pennsylvania Dutch populace in the 21st century, from anachronistic traditionalists to groups that have fully integrated into modern society. The project documents the following religious communities: the Old Order Amish, Horning Mennonites, Moravians and Lutherans of southeastern Pennsylvania. Each section includes a historical overview, an interview with a community member and photographs taken on-location. I conclude that church-imposed restrictions and geographical location shaped each group’s distinctive character and impacted how the groups evolved in the modern world.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by KnowledgeBank at OSU Old Order Mennonites in New York: Cultural and Agricultural Growth Judson Reid1 Senior Extension Associate Cornell Cooperative Extension Cornell University Abstract New York is experiencing dramatic population growth among horse-and-buggy driving populations. Farming is recognized as essential to the maintenance of these cultures. Nationally, these groups, particularly in larger settlements, struggle to stay active in farming. However, Old Order Mennonites run contrary to trends within the plain sects as well as agriculture at large. With over 570 households, a central New York settlement of Groffdale Conference Mennonites grew by 2,700% over the last three decades. They have one of the highest percentages of their population in agriculture, operating 99% of the dairy farms in the area, yet with a herd size of less than 50% of the state average. A Mennonite run produce auction grew by $185,000 annually for the last 12 years; and church members operate nearly 50 agricultural support businesses in the settlement. Youth activities, mission work, business growth, and internal social support systems (for both Mennonite and other Old Orders) are outward signs of the inner strength of the settlement. Potential constraints to growth include geography, commodity prices, and doctrinal issues. Another man holds the bridle of the dark-colored horse pulling the buggy. [WJC Photo] EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! – July 20, 1911 Iron Mountain Press, Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Michigan, Volume 16, Number 9 [Thursday, July 20, 1911], page 1, column 3 Rigs in Collision. Last Sunday evening, a carriage containing Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Kellan was run into and overturned by another rig containing a pair of jagged [drunken] foreigners. Mr. and Mrs. K. were thrown under the horse’s feet, but the animal moved ahead and the carriage was overturned upon them. Mr. K. succeeded in extricating Mrs. K. from the wreck and in stopping his horse. The carriage containing the joy riders was badly smashed, the occupants being thrown headlong to the road, but escaped serious injuries. Mrs. Kellan was taken to her home in an automobile. Her injuries consisted of bruises. Mr. Kellan was uninjured. The accident was fortune [sic] in that no one was killed or badly injured. Old Order Mennonites in New York: Cultural and Agricultural Growth Judson Reid1 Senior Extension Associate Cornell Cooperative Extension Cornell University Abstract New York is experiencing dramatic population growth among horse-and-buggy driving populations. Farming is recognized as essential to the maintenance of these cultures. Nationally, these groups, particularly in larger settlements, struggle to stay active in farming. However, Old Order Mennonites run contrary to trends within the plain sects as well as agriculture at large. With over 570 households, a central New York settlement of Groffdale Conference Mennonites grew by 2,700% over the last three decades. They have one of the highest percentages of their population in agriculture, operating 99% of the dairy farms in the area, yet with a herd size of less than 50% of the state average.
