I studied with Jeffrey for six years as a student at Juilliard and use much of what I learned from him on a daily basis in my life as a professional musician. Now that I’m working in the city [as principal flute at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, since fall 2018], we try to catch up over brunch every once in a while. As a student, my questions were usually strictly focused on the music. But now that I’m embarking on my own orchestral career I wanted to find out more about Jeff’s insights on teaching and performing, as well. We met for a chat in early February at Etc. Etc. on West 44th Street in Manhattan. CHELSEA KNOX: As a former student of yours I wanted to start out by talking about your approach to teaching. I heard you say in an interview with Ed Joffe last year: I do not consider it my responsibility to turn out students who are going to get jobs. My responsibility is to help a student learn how to learn. This is something I am very grateful for from having studied with you. Can you give any insight in how flute teachers can help students learn how to learn? JEFFREY KHANER: Actually, it’s easy. You simply explain how to think about something from your own personal experience. So, when one is talking about music, one can easily go through with a student the same processes that one uses to figure out how to play something. You start with the basics: which is the most important note? That opens up a whole new set of questions, and you just keep working step by step from there.     Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know.     Canadian-born flutist Jeffrey Khaner has been principal flute of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 1990. From 1982 to 1990 he was principal flute of the Cleveland Orchestra, and he has also served as principal of the New York Mostly Mozart Festival and the Atlantic Symphony in Halifax, and as co-principal of the Pittsburgh Symphony. A noted soloist, Mr. Khaner has performed concertos with orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia, collaborating with conductors including Matthias Bamert, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor, Hans Werner Henze, Vladimir Jurowski, Erich Leinsdorf, Kurt Masur, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Yutaka Sado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Gerard Schwarz, José Serebrier, Robert Spano, Franz Welser- Möst, and David Zinman. Mr. Khaner’s concerto repertoire is extensive and he has premiered many works including the concertos by Ned Rorem, Behzad Ranjbaran, Jonathan Leshnoff, Eric Sessler, Daron Hagen and David Chesky, all written for him. As a recitalist, Mr. Khaner has appeared on four continents with pianists Charles Abramovic, Christoph Eschenbach, Lowell Liebermann, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Hugh Sung, and many others. He regularly incorporates into the programs the music of today’s composers, many of whom have written expressly for him. Mr. Khaner is a founding member of the Syrinx Trio (with former Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Viola Roberto Díaz and Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Harp Elizabeth Hainen), which made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 at Weill Recital Hall. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mr. Khaner was named to the faculty as flute professor in 2004, holding the position formerly held by his mentor, the late Julius Baker.

    Program Featuring Marina Piccinini, Flute Hailed by Gramophone 2014 as “the Heifetz of the flute,” flutist Marina Piccinini Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) is recognized as one of the world’s leading flute virtuosos. The first flutist to win the Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 Avery Fisher Career Award, she combines flawless technical command, profound Moderato interpretive instincts, and a charismatic stage presence. In January and February Scherzo 2016, she performed the World Premiere of the Aaron Jay Kernis Flute Concerto Andante written for her, with Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Allegro con brio Ward Stare and the Rochester Philharmonic. Marina enjoys an international career as soloist with major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, the London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, the National Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Or- Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016) chestra, Montreal Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Rotterdam Philhar- Sonatine for Flute and Piano monic.
