Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. Program Featuring Marina Piccinini, Flute Hailed by Gramophone 2014 as “the Heifetz of the flute,” flutist Marina Piccinini Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) is recognized as one of the world’s leading flute virtuosos. The first flutist to win the Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 Avery Fisher Career Award, she combines flawless technical command, profound Moderato interpretive instincts, and a charismatic stage presence. In January and February Scherzo 2016, she performed the World Premiere of the Aaron Jay Kernis Flute Concerto Andante written for her, with Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Allegro con brio Ward Stare and the Rochester Philharmonic. Marina enjoys an international career as soloist with major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, the London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, the National Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Or- Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016) chestra, Montreal Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Rotterdam Philhar- Sonatine for Flute and Piano monic. About the Artists
ABOUT THE ARTISTS JEANNE BAXTRESSER, Vira L. Heinz Professor of Flute Jeanne Baxtresser has held principal positions with three major orchestras, culminating in her 15-year tenure as Solo Flutist of the New York Philharmonic. Making her heralded debut with the Minnesota Orchestra at age 14, Ms. Baxtresser began her professional career as Principal Flutist of the Montreal Symphony immediately following her graduation from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Julius Baker. She was subsequently appointed Principal Flute of the Toronto Symphony before being invited by Music Director Zubin Mehta to join the New York Philharmonic. Ms. Baxtresser appeared as soloist with the New York Philharmonic on more than fifty occasions, and has been featured as a soloist across North America and Europe. Ms. Baxtresser was named a recipient of the National Flute Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for significant, lasting contributions to the flute world, and she was also awarded the National Medal of Arts from the Interlochen Center for the Arts. She is recognized internationally as a leading recording artist, author and lecturer. In great demand as a teacher, many of Ms. Baxtresser’s students occupy principal and section positions in major orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. While in New York, Ms. Baxtresser served on the faculties of The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. In 1998, she was appointed the Vira I. Heinz Professor of Flute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she has attracted many outstanding flute students from around the world. Ms. Baxtresser was also named University Professor, Carnegie Mellon University’s most distinguished professorial position awarded to those individuals who have achieved exceptional international recognition.

PROGRAM PAULA ROBISON is one of the most acclaimed flutists in the Romance, Op. 37 C. Saint-Saens concert world today. Nashville-born and California-raised, she studied 1835-1921 with Julius Baker at the Juilliard School and later with Marcel Moyse. She was only 20 years old when Leonard Bernstein invited her to be a Concertino, Op. 107 C. Chaminade soloist with the New York Philharmonic, and she was the first 1857-1944 American ever to win the Geneva Competition. Paula Robison, flute Ms. Robison has commissioned works for flute and orchestra by Leon Kirchner, Toru Takemitsu, Oliver Knussen, Robert Beaser, and Concerto in D Major, K. 314 W.A. Mozart Kenneth Frazelle, premiered music written for her by Lowell -Allegro aperto 1756-1791 Liebermann and Michael Tilson Thomas, performed Leonard Yulan Chen, flute Bernstein’s “Hålil” in Vienna and Carl Nielsen’s Concerto in Copenhagen, and presented a rich spectrum of music from Mozart Image E.
