PROGRAM PAULA ROBISON is one of the most acclaimed flutists in the Romance, Op. 37 C. Saint-Saens concert world today. Nashville-born and California-raised, she studied 1835-1921 with Julius Baker at the Juilliard School and later with Marcel Moyse. She was only 20 years old when Leonard Bernstein invited her to be a Concertino, Op. 107 C. Chaminade soloist with the New York Philharmonic, and she was the first 1857-1944 American ever to win the Geneva Competition. Paula Robison, flute Ms. Robison has commissioned works for flute and orchestra by Leon Kirchner, Toru Takemitsu, Oliver Knussen, Robert Beaser, and Concerto in D Major, K. 314 W.A. Mozart Kenneth Frazelle, premiered music written for her by Lowell -Allegro aperto 1756-1791 Liebermann and Michael Tilson Thomas, performed Leonard Yulan Chen, flute Bernstein’s “Hålil” in Vienna and Carl Nielsen’s Concerto in Copenhagen, and presented a rich spectrum of music from Mozart Image E. Bozza Concerti to Brazilian Samba in her many appearances at New York’s Adah Forer, flute 1905-1991 Carnegie Hall. Though trained in western-European tradition, Paula Robison recognizes the flute as one of the first ways humans had of making music: a kind of voice of nature. INTERMISSION Paula Robison has recorded for Vanguard Classics, Sony Classical, CBS Masterworks, Mode (the complete Berio Sequenzas, awarded the Andante Pastoral et Scherzettino P. Taffanel Premio del Disco Amadeus 2008, and Lei Liang’s “In Praise of Pheobe Rawn, flute 1804-1908 Shadows”), New World Records, King Records, Musical Heritage Society (with longtime duo partners Eliot Fisk and Ruth Laredo), and Bridge Recordings (her Marlboro Festival performance of Schubert’s Introduction and Variations with Rudolf Serkin, named American Danse de la Chevre A. Honegger Record Guide’s Best Recording of the Year). Her books on the art of 1892-1955 flute playing are published by Universal Edition, Schott, European- James Conroy, flute American Music, G. Schirmer, and Theodore Presser. In 2006 she founded Pergola Recordings, an independent label. New releases Sonatine H. Dutilleux coming up in 2014 include collaborations with American pianist Steven 1916-2013 Beck and Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen. Mia Nakajima, flute Paula Robison has taught at the Juilliard School and given classes all over the world. She now occupies the Donna Hieken Flute Chair at All flutists accompanied on piano by Miles Graber and New England Conservatory, and teaches at the Interlochen Flute Institute each June.
