Karunakaran, widely known as ‘Karan’ amongst horse riding lovers in the kingdom is a horse riding instructor for the past 25 years. Weekender took up the chance to meet the trainers in his mid-40s who said that becoming an instructor wasn’t a planned move but a passion that rose to its optimal stance when he was 18. “As an instructor, I provide coaching to my students in a variety of equestrian disciplines whilst building a designed skill to improve the performance and communication between the rider and the horse. The first and foremost exercise that I educate my students in is to get rid of the fear factor. They have to come close to a horse, feel its presence and allow the horse to mingle with the student who’s going to take up the saddle. “It is all about the trust and confidence we build before jumping onto a horse. We have to understand the horse in and out and never try annoying it in any manner. I also offer them a quick tour of the stable while teaching them the basics of grooming and tacking up” Karan told Weekender.
