A Combined Record of St George’s Church Monumental Inscriptions and the Register of Graves Many of the headstones and monuments at St George’s church were removed during the 1970’s under “Operation Clean-up”. Prior to these works being undertaken in the churchyard a record of the Monumental Inscriptions was made by Pauline Phillips, the first female Curate of St George’s church. Pauline’s typed work is the only record of the monumental inscriptions that once were inscribed on the now lost headstones and monuments formerly at St George’s. Pauline’s work was painstakingly undertaken before the technological revolution that gave us the Internet, Home Computers, and Digital Camera’s. Forty years later, in the later part of the 2010’s, Kathryn Young digitally photographed every remaining headstone and monument at St George’s. Kathryn then uploaded the photographs, and their monumental inscriptions, onto the free to access, no membership required web site “Find A Grave”. These photographs and monumental inscriptions can now be found at: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2551941/st.-george-parish-churchyard this web site is searchable by name. Inside St George’s church are many stained glass windows, prayer desks, and other items that hold a memorial to someone buried at St George’s church, but who do not have a remaining headstone or monument. For these people a memorial to them has been created on the Find A Grave web site by Rita Vaughan. Pauline’s original work has now been reproduced, in 2020, in digital form, by Rita Vaughan, and this e-format now allows for searching and sharing. Pauline’s original layout and format is followed. This document is a printed version of the 2020 digital work. Also at St George’s Church, in the archives, there are two Registers of Graves: Version One is Typewritten and Bound. This is an undated work. It contains some entries not seen in Version Two. Version Two is Handwritten and has lost its front cover. It is inscribed: Revised 1932 by E B Clarke, Vicar. Most Entries in both Registers match. Where different information is given in the Register of Graves then both versions are contained in the records below. For Example: Grave 10, Range A, 1820 Ground Version One says J Gee lived at Park Cottage. Version Two says that J Gee lived at the Town Hall. These two versions simply show two different descriptions of the same address. The information from the Register of Graves has been included with the record of the Monumental Inscriptions. Generally speaking the burial book has been checked to see if the date of death corresponds with an entry. Quotes from Bible Passages or other popular or common sayings or statements are given in italics. For those headstones and memorials that had a monumental inscription in the 1970’s a statement is given to say whether the headstone remains in situ in its original position, or whether it was relocated and now forms part of the path, or whether it has been removed completely and to all intents and purposes no longer exists. Some headstones were taken off site, and some were buried on site. For those graves without a headstone or monument in the 1970’s these can be identified by the no stone statement. Where memorial inscriptions were added to the headstones or memorials post the 1970’s recording these have been included in the record for the particular graves.
