  • Flat Church History 2016
ST. JAMES CHURCH HOPE THE STORY OF THE ORIGINS AND PROGRESS OF THE PARISH CHURCH FROM 1861 TO 2016 Compiled by Fred Lloyd Page Page ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: There is not much documentary evidence available to make it easy to trace the story of the Parish Church. Because of this I am very thankful that the late Norman Rimmer, a former Churchwarden, took the time and trouble to pen a number of articles on the subject for the Parish Magazine. I have been able to use a lot of the information that he pro- vided. Thanks also to David Russell for the loan of his excellent book “I was Glad - A History of the Choir and Music of St. James Church, Hope, Salford”. It is a comprehensive book which contains much more mate- rial than I could use here. Well worth dipping into if you are interested in this aspect of things. I am grateful for the great amount of help I received from the staff at the Salford Local History Library in my searches for photographs, maps etc. My thanks are also due to the Dean and staff at Brisbane Ca- thedral for providing a wealth of information about one of our early incumbents. David Sharples, ninth Vicar of Hope, provided me with the fine photo- graph of the original parsonage and some very useful pieces of paper for which I am also grateful. Thanks also to all those people with whom I have chatted and who have been able to point me in the right direction. Also to the Secretar- ies of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) over the years for the su- perb minutes that I have had the opportunity to trawl through.

Mr Hanley was also kind enough to make a number of valuable suggestions on the first draft of the introduction which also benefited from the ideas (albeit on their part unknowingly) of Dr J. Broad of the North East London Polytechnic and Dr D. R. Mills of the Open University whose lectures on Bucks village society at Stowe School in April 1982 proved immensely illuminating. None of the above, of course, bear any responsibility for any errors of interpretation on my part.

  • Hotel Berlin
HOTEL BERLIN: THE POLITICS OF COMMERCIAL HOSPITALITY IN THE GERMAN METROPOLIS, 1875–1945 by Adam Bisno A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland December, 2017 © 2017 Adam Bisno ii Dissertation Advisor: Peter Jelavich Adam Bisno Hotel Berlin: The Politics of Commercial Hospitality in the German Metropolis, 1875–1945 Abstract This dissertation examines the institution of the grand hotel in Imperial, Weimar, and Nazi Berlin. It is a German cultural and business history of the fate of classical liberalism, which in practice treated human beings as rational, self-regulating subjects. The major shareholders in the corporations that owned the grand hotels, hotel managers, and hotel experts, through their daily efforts to keep the industry afloat amid the vicissitudes of modern German history, provide a vantage point from which to see the pathways from quotidian difficulties to political decisions, shedding light on how and why a multi-generational group of German businessmen embraced and then rejected liberal politics and culture in Germany. Treating the grand hotel as an institution and a space for the cultivation of liberal practices, the dissertation contributes to the recent body of work on liberal governance in the modern city by seeing the grand hotel as a field in which a dynamic, socially and culturally heterogeneous population tried and ultimately failed to determine the powers and parameters of liberal subjectivity. In locating the points at which liberal policies became impracticable, this dissertation also enters a conversation about the timing and causes of the crisis of German democracy.

  • Holding Government to Account—150 Years of the Committee of Public
Holding Government to Account 150 years of the Committee of Public Accounts 1857 – 2007 The Committee of Public Accounts would like to acknowledge the use of a number of sources in the preparation of this document. In particular, it has drawn heavily on “The Control of Public Expenditure: Financial Committees of the House of Commons” by Basil Chubb (Oxford 1952) and made use of “The Accountability and Audit of Governments” by E L Normanton (Manchester University Press 1966), “Harold Wilson’’ by Ben Pimlott (Harper Collins 1993) and ‘‘Westminster: Does Parliament Work?’’ by John Garrett (Victor Gollancz Ltd 1992) and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press, 2007). We are grateful for the assistance of the National Audit Office in preparing this history and the House of Commons Library for supplying invaluable reference material. Holding Government to Account 150 years of the Committee of Public Accounts 1857 – 2007 ‘‘That there shall be a standing Committee to be designated ’’The Committee of Public Accounts’’; for the examination of the Accounts showing the appropriation of sums granted by Parliament to meet the Public Expenditure, to consist of‘‘ nine members, who shall be nominated at the commencement of every Session, and of whom five shall be a quorum. 31 March 1862 Houses of Parliament 1860 As current Chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts, I am delighted to present this short history, which has been prepared to celebrate 150 years of the Committee. History should continue to inform the present. This booklet reminds us of the contemporary relevance of the centuries old desire to strengthen Parliamentary scrutiny over the public finances.
