La Bibliothèque des Jésuites sise aux Fontaines (Chantilly, Oise) possèdait quelque 1.500 manuscrits. 1. Origine du fonds des manuscrits. La plupart des manuscrits proviennent des bibliothèques des anciens scolasticats jésuites de Jersey et d’Enghien (Belgique). Un groupe important appartenait auparavant à l’Ecole Sainte-Geneviève de Versailles. Le reste a été vraisemblablement recueilli par des Jésuites à la suite de dons, d’héritages ou d’achats dans des ventes publiques: ainsi ceux qui proviennent de la chartreuse de Buxheim. 2. Les Textes On peut penser que la moitié environ des pièces sont des textes ayant des Jésuites pour auteurs ou qui sont rédigés par des étudiants dans le cadre de leur enseignement. Le reste a des origines très diverses. La plupart des domaines du savoir sont représentés. Les textes de type spirituel sont les plus nombreux : retraites, recueils de dévotion et de prières, traités, études et recherches (par exemple, sur les Exercices spirituels d’Ignace de Loyola), livres d’emblèmes, poèmes, etc. Les cours pris en note par des étudiants d’université et de collège sont très nombreux : cours de rhétorique, de physique, de philosophie, de théologie ; il y a là une mine pour l’histoire de l’enseignement. Par contre, les traités proprement dits en ces matières, comme aussi en Ecriture sainte, en liturgie, droit canon, sont moins nombreux. Moins bien représentés, par comparaison, sont les secteurs suivants : prédication, histoire du monde, de France, de l’Eglise, biographie et hagiographie. Les querelles autour du jansénisme, de la philosophie des Lumières, les Convulsionnaires (21 ms.), la Révolution française (8 ms.), tel ordre religieux ou telle congrégation (Célestins, Cisterciens, congrégations hospitalières et enseignantes) font l’objet de textes assez peu nombreux, mais souvent dignes d’intérêt. Signalons aussi quelques manuscrits provenant de la Franc-maçonnerie ou concernant les sciences, les métiers (y compris militaires) et la géographie. Notons enfin qu’un nombre assez important de ces textes sont des copies, faites surtout à la fin du 19e et dans le premier tiers du 20e siècle ; il s’agit souvent de copies d’ouvrages spirituels qui manquaient à la Bibliothèque. 3 Les manuscrits marqués d’un astérisque * ont été conservés par l’ordre jésuite à Paris 3. Ancienneté des textes Les 2/3 environ de ces textes sont rédigés (originaux ou copies) aux 19e et 20e siècles. Une part très importante du reste date du 18e siècle. Le manuscrit le plus ancien est un fragment de lectionnaire du 11e siècle (AR 1/37 : 4 p.), puis vient une « Introductio ad vitam contemplativam » (Ms 8° 304), d’environ 1350, d’une lecture difficile, mais en bon état. Un Psautier est malheureusement amputé de plusieurs de ses pages (14e/15e ; AR 1/63). Probablement du 15e siècle : le « De Corpore Christi » de Thomas d’Aquin avec quelques courts textes de Nicolas de Lyre (Ms Fol. 46), le « De laudibus beatissimae Mariae » de Richard de Saint-Laurent et le « De animalibus » d’Albert le Grand (Ms Fol. 75/1-2, malheureusement rongés d’humidité dans la partie inférieure)., la « Cronica Pontificum » de Martin de Troppau (AR 1/114) et les « Décrétales », dites de Grégoire IX, dues à Raymond de Penyafort (AR 1/134). 4. « Preciosa » Nous appliquons ce terme aux manuscrits qui présentent un intérêt spirituel évident, pour les Jésuites en particulier. Ainsi, le Ms AR 2/20, dit « Martinensis » parce qu’il provient de la chartreuse de Bois-Saint-Martin (Belgique), nous conserve, outre des textes des saints Bernard et Bonaventure, une copie de la Lettre sur l’obéissance d’Ignace de Loyola et surtout un texte des « Exercices spirituels » dicté par Pierre Favre en 1543 à Louvain (seule version connue, datant de 1555 probablement). De même, le Ms AR 2/314 contient une traduction française des « Exercices » datée de 1604 ; c’est la plus ancienne connue. Citons encore la « Relation » de Mme Guyon, contenant le chapitre inédit de sa « Vie » concernant ses prisons, le recueil « Philbert » des lettres de Caussade qui contient, croit- on, les seules lettres intégrales connues de cet auteur, un inédit de Pierre de Clorivière de 1791 concernant les Lumières, la Franc-maçonnerie et la Révolution commençante, et de nombreux manuscrits d’oeuvres spirituelles inédites, comme celles du récollet Archange Enguerrand + 1699, du chartreux Pierre Horst + 1716, du prêtre Gabriel Gauchat + 1777, comme les lettres de direction du jésuite Jean Bonaventure Périgaud + après 1781 et les sermons de Louis Orléans de la Motte, évêque d’Amiens mort en 1774. Des retraites et conférences du Jésuite Claude Judde, nous gardons 32 manuscrits, autant de signes de l’influence de ce bon spirituel au 18e siècle. Nous avons évoqué plus haut la première traduction française des « Exercices spirituels » (Ms AR 2/314) ; c’est un recueil de textes spirituels confectionné par un Jésuite sous un format assez maniable pour être emporté facilement dans ses déplacements. Le Ms 12° 145 est un recueil analogue fait par un Jésuite méxicain au début du 17e siècle ; on y trouve en particulier des conférences du P. Juan de la Plaza + 1602, qui fut son instructeur ; ces conférences sur l’humilité, l’oraison et divers avis spirituels ne figurent pas dans les éditions même récentes des oeuvres de La Plaza. Cette brève présentation ne peut donner qu’une idée très incomplète du Fonds des manuscrits des Fontaines. He authored many publications (books, pamphlets, etc.), such as The Art of Loving God, Introduction to the Devout Life and Finding God’s Will for You. Many writings were addressed to lay people regarding the universal call of all Catholics to be saints. He was blessed in his ability to return Calvinists to the faith through his simple and clear explanation of Catholic doctrine. Furthermore, he used sign language to convert the deaf and helped found the Order of the Visitation, with Jane de Chantal. He had a stroke on December 27th during a journey, back to the diocese of Geneva. There he received the last sacraments and made his profession of faith, repeating constantly the words: "God's will be done! Jesus, my God and my all!" He died the next day, on December 28th, 1622; he was 55 years old.

In 431, the Council of Ephesus met to correct false teachings about Christ’s divinity. The Council affirmed that Jesus is true God and true man. Since Mary is the Mother of Jesus, who is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, she can truly be called the Mother of God. Devotion to Mary as the Mother of God continued to spread from this time to the present. January 2: St. Basil the Great, Bishop Born to wealthy family in 330, Basil’s family had been Christians for generations. He was well educated, and eventually settled in Caesarea to practice law in 356. There, he met a bishop named Eustanthius and radically changed his life. He wrote, “I beheld the wonderful light of the Gospel truth, and I recognized the nothingness of the wisdom of the princes of this world.” He was baptized and founded a monastic community on his family estate. St. Basil wrote many works about monastic life which has deeply influence the Eastern Church. He attended the Council of Constantinople in 360 and supported the Nicene Creed. He was made a bishop in 370 and focused on serving the poor and reforming criminals. He died in 379. It presents a comprehensive historical study and analysis of Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis and Bl. Louis Brisson’s foundational vision for the De Sales Oblates, in the ecclesial-pastoral context of 19th-century French Catholicism, as a retrieval (ressourcement) and contemporizing (aggiornamento) of St. Francis de Sales. The impetus for undertaking this research was twofold. The first was the revision of the De Sales Oblate Constitutions, and the other, preparation of a volume on the 19th-century Salesian Pentecost for Paulist Press’s “Classics of Western Spirituality” series that is a collaborative project by Dr. Wendy M. Wright, Fr. Joseph Boenzi, SDB, and Fr. Joseph F. Chorpenning, OSFS, who is responsible for the Oblate and Fransalian sections of the volume. Louis Brisson,1 founder of both the Ob- late Sisters and the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, has brought to the at- tention of the Church and to the general public his heroic virtues, his many and varied apostolic endeavors and his engaging approach to evangelization which effectively involved close collaboration with the laity. These aspects of his evangelizing ministry can contribute to the Church’s emphasis on the New Evangelization in this Year of Faith.     No. 25 • April 2010 Founded in 1997 and published biannually by the International Commission for Salesian Studies (ICSS) of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales Foundation of the Visitation Order A Celebration of Visitandine Heritage The Musée de la Visitation in Moulins The town of Moulins (about a two-and-a-half hour drive by car from Lyon) is the site of the third monastery of the Visitation Order to be founded (the first was, of course, Annecy in 1610, and the second, Lyon in 1615). The Moulins foundation was made on 25 August 1616 against incredible odds by Mother Jeanne- Charlotte de Bréchard (1580-1637), one of the first three Visitandines at Annecy. Together with Lyon, it “prepared the way for the expansion of the Order in central France and towards the north and west in the direction of the all-important capital, Paris.”1 It was at Moulins where St. Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641), on whose shoulders the entire responsibility for the nascent Order and its prodigious growth rested after the death of St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), died on 13 December 1641. Today Moulins boasts not only an historic Visitation monastery, but the splendid Musée de la Visitation (Museum of the Visitation), which is devoted to the preservation of the history and cultural patrimony of the Visitation Order, which this year celebrates the 400th anniversary of its foundation. In 1990, the Moulins Visitation seemed destined to close (this was subsequently averted), and a friend of the community, M. Gérard Picaud, promised its superior, Mother Françoise-Bernadette Lara, to preserve in Moulins the memory of the Order’s presence there.

Senior Salesian Scholar Mary de Sales Chappuis (1793-1875): Apostle of the Salesian Spirit published in SALESIANUM (the journal of the Università Pontificia Salesiana) volume 71 (2009), pages 321-340 Call to be an Apostle Salvation history is replete with stories of little people, whom God has chosen to fulfill monumental tasks. The story of our salvation in the new dispensation began with the visit of God's messenger to a teenage girl in an obscure town of a country not known for its wealth, power or prestige. It was further developed with the choosing of the apostles, who were quite ordinary and seemingly untalented men, but, when inflamed and inspired by the Holy Spirit, changed the world. To continue their work, God has, down the centuries, frequently turned to some of the most unlikely people. We have seen this in recent times, especially in the life of St. Theresa of Lisieux and in the bona fide apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to humble peasant children at La Salette, Lourdes and Fatima. It is the goal of this study to show how God's special intervention and election were also evident in the life of Marie-Trérèe Chappuis born in the little Swiss village of Soyhières in the Jura mountains, which was annexed by France during the French Revolution. Hers was a pious and deeply religious Catholic family. She was one of eleven children, six of whom entered the religious life. Marie-Térèse was deeply attached to family and loved her hometown and the surrounding country side.1 To complete her education, she went to the Visitation boarding school in Fribourg at the age of 14 and remained there for two years.
