Hale Liberal Arts Professor of African, French, and Comparative Literature Head of the Department of French and Francophone Studies *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Many French politicians and academics believed that a lack of map-reading skills contributed to France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Following this loss, the introduction of geography into the national educational curriculum changed how maps were used and understood in the early Third Republic. Used widely by travel guidebook authors and by government officials administering the city prior to 1870, maps took on an additional role during the Third Republic: through visual representation they helped reaffirm the republic’s desire for a common national identity. This identity, based on the modernity and stability of the new regime, helped a volatile France redefine itself and its capital city. This dissertation is a study of France’s view of Paris and of how the government and publishers wished to portray its capital city to the world. This study aims to define how France promoted Paris as a modern, stable capital city, and how the government used maps as instruments of power associated with the emergence of a more confident Republic. Overreaching concepts in the study are the notions of map discourse (color, text, shapes, and symbols), modernity, and republicanism. Though guidebook discourse has been studied in detail, the examination of maps as a valid tool for disseminating the government’s message has been only summarily treated. Studies in this area address primarily French travel or tourism, focusing mainly on the texts supporting these maps, such as travel guides. Among the maps this study examines are those published by the city of Paris and its government agencies, along with maps from the Guide Joanne travel guidebook series. To explore the background of these maps, I use approaches and methods in cultural history, but also rely on semiotics and historiography. iv The study’s importance lies in multiple definitions of modernity and in how those definitions were used to promote the French capital. 1870 Paris was a damaged city, one prone to rebellion, and the French wished to counter this notion. Documenting the city as calm and republican on maps was one way to do just that. As the Third Republic continued, stability became the norm. Multiple Expositions Universelles served not only as demonstrations of national pride, but also as proof that Paris had recovered from both military defeat and internal strife with official and tourist guide map discourse helping to promulgate this message. Furthermore, as the French Third Republic became more confident in its ability to govern Paris, and France, and the French became better map readers, its discourse adapted. Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact.

    NotaeUn site Praehistoricae, d’exploitation 30-2010 néolithique : 57-71 dans le complexe minier du Pays d’Othe 57 Un site d’exploitation néolithique dans le complexe minier du Pays d’Othe : fouille préventive à Mesnil-Saint-Loup - « Les Vieilles Vignes » (Aube, France) Anne Hauzeur, Jean-Philippe Collin, Henri-Georges Naton, Sébastien Bernard-Guelle & Paul Fernandes Résumé Dans le cadre d’une opération de fouille préventive à Mesnil-Saint-Loup (Aube, Champagne), un site minier a été partiellement dégagé sur quelque 8000 m². Près de 600 structures d’extraction ont été relevées, de la fosse superficielle au puits peu profond, atteignant 2,85 m. Les bancs irréguliers de silex coniacien ont été exploités pour la production de haches taillées que l’on retrouve à tous les stades de façonnage. Des nucléus et des « biseaux » ont été également récoltés en abondance. Le simple andouiller en bois de cerf a été utilisé au fonçage des structures; quelques marteaux sur meule pourraient avoir servi de percuteur. L’activité de la minière se situe au Néolithique moyen II, dans la première moitié du 4e millénaire avant notre ère. Mots-clés : Mesnil-Saint-Loup, Champagne (F), Pays d’Othe, minières de silex, ébauches de hache, pics en bois de cerf. Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen einer präventiven Grabungsmaßnahme in Mesnil-Saint-Loup (Aube, Champagne) konnte eine Silexabbaustelle von circa 8000 m2 teilweise freigelegt werden. Ungefähr 600 Abbaustrukturen wurden erfasst, von der ober- flächennahen Grube bis zum lediglich 2,85 m eingetieften Schacht. Die unregelmäßigen Schichten des Coniacien- Feuersteins dienten der Herstellung von Beilklingen, die man in allen Produktionsvorgängen (Bearbeitungsstufen) vorfand.

Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism.

In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean.

El trasfondo de este suceso estuvo teñido por cuestiones epistemológicas, con epicentro en las dife- rentes concepciones sobre el medio; como así también institucionales, ya que la Sociología pretendía integrar dentro de su dominio al campo de la Geografía Humana.
