Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Corythucha arcuata November 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA This rapid PRA is an update of one produced in 2007 and shows that the oak lace bug has the potential to add strain to trees and ecosystems which are already under threat from other pests and environmental factors. This pest has been present in Europe for some time, but in recent years its distribution has either expanded, or its population levels have increased so there is greater evidence of the potential effects of this pest, though still many uncertainties. The ratings for establishment potential and economic impact remain unchanged, however, more evidence of the potential of this pest to move on wood and wood products has led to a raising of the risk of entry, and evidence from Europe suggests that this pest may have a greater potential environmental impact than previously rated. Risk of entry Although oak trees are the preferred host, there are a number of other tree species that can be potential hosts, and therefore entry has been assessed accordingly. Entry on plants for planting has been assessed as moderately likely with medium confidence. The oak lace bug is most likely to be associated with plants for planting when overwintering under loose bark scales and in crevices. Most plants imported into the UK are likely to be young trees, with few bark crevices. Larger trees do represent a significant 1 risk, as it would be difficult to determine if they were pest free, however the numbers are likely to be fewer. -

GRAINGER HUNT 1US Fish & Wildlife Service, National Forensics Laboratory 1490 East Main Street, Ashland, OR 97520-1310 USA 2The Peregrine Fund, 5668 West Flying Hawk Lane, Boise ID 96056 USA E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT.—Ingested lead shotgun pellets and rifle bullet fragments have been shown to be an important source of lead poisoning in water birds, raptors, avian scavengers, and even seed-eating birds. Ingestion of spent lead shotgun pellets by waterfowl and secondary ingestion by Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocepha- lus) scavenging on waterfowl led to the change of hunting regulations that prohibit the use of toxic lead pellets for waterfowl hunting in the United States. However, bullets containing toxic lead are still widely used to hunt large game animals and “varmints” and are a source of lead in the environment available to wildlife. Basic bullet materials available to the bullet manufacturer include lead alloys, lead with external copper wash, lead core with copper jacket, pure copper, and bismuth. Lead and bismuth are highly frangible, whereas pure copper bullets tend to remain intact after impact. Bullet fragmentation increases the degree of lead contamination in tissue ingested by scavengers feeding on hunter-killed animal remains. Modern bullet design, velocity, composition, and bone impact are significant factors in the character and distribution of lead particles in carcasses, gut piles, and wound tissue left in the field by hunters. Prior to the 1900s, bullets were made entirely of lead. Their velocities were relatively slow (<2000 feet per second), and their ten- dency to fragment was accordingly lower than that of modern ammunition. -

FOREST INSECT CONDITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES 1966 FOREST SERVICE ' U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Foreword This report is the 18th annual account of the scope, severity, and trend of the more important forest insect infestations in the United States, and of the programs undertaken to check resulting damage and loss. It is compiled primarily for managers of public and private forest lands, but has become useful to students and others interested in outbreak trends and in the location and extent of pest populations. The report also makes possible n greater awareness of the insect prob lem and of losses to the timber resource. The opening section highlights the more important conditions Nationwide, and each section that pertains to a forest region is prefaced by its own brief summary. Under the Federal Forest Pest Control Act, a sharing by Federal and State Governments the costs of surveys and control is resulting in a stronger program of forest insect and disease detection and evaluation surveys on non-Federal lands. As more States avail themselves of this financial assistance from the Federal Government, damage and loss from forest insects will become less. The screening and testing of nonpersistent pesticides for use in suppressing forest defoliators continued in 1966. The carbamate insecticide Zectran in a pilot study of its effectiveness against the spruce budworm in Montana and Idaho appeared both successful and safe. More extensive 'tests are planned for 1967. Since only the smallest of the spray droplets reach the target, plans call for reducing the spray to a fine mist. The course of the fine spray, resulting from diffusion and atmospheric currents, will be tracked by lidar, a radar-laser combination. -

GUIDE FOR MEMBERS 2020-21 Lowndes County Wildlife Federation RULES 1. The Board of Directors of the Lowndes County Wildlife Federation will administer all rules. 2. Members shall obey all Federal and State Game and Fish Laws as well as LCWF rules. 3. Members will at all times conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner and will not intentionally misrepresent themselves or any of their actions while on LCWF properties. GUIDELINES The board is determined to run the club as a recreational group and not as a business. If you see a problem, or make a mistake, tell someone and it will be fairly dealt with. We are only human, and deserves a fair shake. Repeated and severe infractions will be seriously dealt with. This is your club and you need to serve as a watchman for its health and welfare. Let’s all have a good time and enjoy the great outdoors. Be sure to ask a Board Member if you have questions about any of the guidelines below. MEMBER IDENTIFICATION 1. The ecological and economic significance of oak stands and the vulnerability of plants to various abiotic and/or biotic factors requires in-depth knowledge of plant-pest interaction. The present study examined the influence of C. arcuata feeding on the photosynthetic characteristics and gas-exchange parameters, mineral nutrient concentrations and defense mechanisms (the activities of some antioxidant enzymes) of leaves of pedunculate oak. The rate of photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance were lowered by 58.84, 21.66 and 35.71%, respectively, in comparison to non- infested plants. The concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and activities of antioxidant enzymes, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase, were affected by the presence of C. arcuata. To our knowledge this is the first paper providing a report on the physiological responses of Q. robur plants exposed to C. arcuata infestation.
