Annual Report 2012 Big Ideas. Big Results

Since 2004, HeadCount has registered 250,000 voters and rallied millions to be informed, active citizens — primarily through our work with musicians. We use culture, technology, and creativity to drive civic participation. We make it easy for people to vote, to volunteer, and support causes they believe in. By unleashing the power of musicians and fans to make a difference, we harness our collective power to shape the future. Here’s how...

1 www.HeadCount.org www.HeadCount.org 2 The Ingredients: • The power of music • The passion of Fans • The hard work of volunteers

We are a part of a long tradition of music and activism — and we’re taking it to a whole new level through technology and the massive reach of the modern music industry. We work with over 100 nationally-touring acts, including Band, , Jay-Z, , , and Amanda Palmer. When they put on concerts, some of our more than 10,000 volunteers are there with clipboards and smiles, inviting fellow fans to participate in democracy.

3 www.HeadCount.org www.HeadCount.org 4 The Methods: • Voter registration at concerts • Innovative digital media • Strategic collaboration We have perfected voter registration at concerts, staging 1,170 voter registration drives in 2012 through our 50+ local street teams. Online, our National Voter Registration Day “Clipboard Project” was the largest social media- driven voter registration campaign in history, featuring 50 Cent, Stephen Colbert, George Lopez and nearly 200 other notables. Each took a photo with one of our “Register to Vote” clipboards. Then, on September 25th, they tweeted and posted their photos on Facebook with a link to an online voter registration form, generating over 35,000 registrations. National Voter Registration Day was one of HeadCount’s many collaborative efforts. We work with everyone from GLAAD to the NAACP, the 9:30 Club to Live Nation, Patagonia to Pitchfork. We are a strategic connector, acting as a bridge between non-profits, the music industry and all aspects of our network.

5 www.HeadCount.org www.HeadCount.org 6 2012 Results: • 111,198 voter registrations • 16,390 volunteer hours • Over 100 million media impressions 2012 was HeadCount’s best year ever. We registered more voters than any non-profit with a budget of less than $1 million, with more online registrations than MTV or Google. Our Get Out the Vote phone banking doubled in reach. Outlets like USA Today, Rolling Stone, and Mashable relayed our message. Meanwhile, we continued to develop a pipeline for young music fans to become community leaders. Another highlight was The Bridge Session, a live webcast on Yahoo! where our board member teamed up with members of The National for a performance and live roundtable discussion that generated over 2 million views. Our field campaign went on the road with Wilco, , Phish, J. Cole and Furthur, and also hit 47 festivals including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. On National Voter Registration Day, we hit the streets in 33 cities. As the election campaign came to a close, we staged the four-city “Participation Tour” and directed all $12,000 in profits to Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.

HeadCount innovates and executes, bringing original ideas to artists and partners — and then making those ideas a reality. In 2013, we developed SoundOff, a technology that allows anyone to easily tweet at elected officials. We created “Capitol Community,” a program to embed activism and philanthropy right into the business model of an historic theater. And we continue to foster discussions of issues among our sizable social media audience. Most importantly, we develop music fans into leaders. By empowering young people to mobilize their peers, we amplify the voices of many. We’ve also helped more than a dozen of our volunteers get full-time jobs with our partners – a stat we’re as proud of as our voter registration total. Look for HeadCount to break new ground in the years to come. Midterm elections are just around the corner, and we’ve got some big ideas...
