Tomorrow Is Waiting www.strangehorizons.com/2011/20111121/tomorrow-f.shtml By Holli Mintzer 21 November 2011 If you want the truth, it happened because Anji was feeling lazy. Her AI class wasn't all that interesting, nor was it a field she wanted a career in, so there wasn't any reason she could see for trying especially hard. So she came up with a project that didn't look like too much work, and she picked what looked like the easiest way of doing it. Things just got a little out of hand, after that. Anji's AI class was taught by a grad student who seemed as bored as her students. It was a graduation requirement for programmers, even though everyone knew AIs, as a field, weren't going anywhere much. In seventy years of computing nobody yet had designed an AI that passed the Turing test, let alone did anything really interesting. No matter the computing power behind them, AIs just couldn't be as complex as a human brain; everyone knew that. Anji and her classmates still needed to know how to use the little crippleware bots that ran traffic lights and production lines, though, and that meant knowing the basics of AI programming. At least well enough to pass the final. So Anji decided to pick the easiest-looking project off the list of options: Design an AI that mimics the behavior of a public domain character. There was a list of characters to choose from, mostly stuff she'd never heard of. She picked Kermit the Frog because, she figured, there was a ton of footage of Kermit, even if it was mostly fifty years old, and she could just feed old TV shows to a bot until it started acting enough like Kermit to get her a passing grade.

  • Building American Puppetry on the Jim Henson Foundation
BUILDING AMERICAN PUPPETRY ON THE JIM HENSON FOUNDATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Kathleen Stoessner, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Joy Reilly, Adviser Dr. Beth Kattelman Adviser Dr. Alan Woods Graduate Program in Theatre Copyright by Jennifer Kathleen Stoessner 2008 ABSTRACT Historically the United States, with the exception of ritual performances by indigenous Americans, did not have a distinct puppetry tradition, utilizing instead the imported techniques of its immigrant population. In the twentieth century, puppeteers began to explore puppetry’s capabilities, producing challenging and innovative theatrical work in a distinctly American style. Puppetry was given a stage as popular broadcasting content on the newly invented television. In this media environment, Jim Henson pioneered new techniques, becoming the most famous puppeteer in history. His success enabled him to serve his field as a spokesman and sponsor. In 1982, he established the Jim Henson Foundation, a non-profit organization to support puppetry artists. The Jim Henson Foundation is the only organization in the United States devoted to funding puppet theater and its mission reflects Jim Henson’s commitment to the community of artists who make American puppetry the vivid panorama it has become. Without the Foundation, puppetry in the United States would not be experiencing the explosion of creativity and exposure it currently enjoys. To present a picture of puppetry in the United States and Henson’s work, a brief history of puppetry in America as well as an in-depth scrutiny of Jim Henson’s career is provided.

  • Who Is Sir Curtis Seretse?’: a Re-Evaluation of Black Representation in Sixties British Television
95 ARTICLE ‘Who is Sir Curtis Seretse?’: A Re-evaluation of Black Representation in Sixties British Television DR. MICHAEL AHMED, University of East Anglia ABSTRACT This paper re-evaluates the significance of Sir Curtis Seretse, a black character from the 1960s television series Department S (ITV 1969-70) which has largely been ignored. While earlier critical and academic discourse of Department S has primarily centred on the flamboyant Jason King, the importance of Seretse’s character has been overlooked. Seretse, as the head of Department S, is in a position of authority and power over the other (white) characters of the show. Furthermore, he represents a highly educated character that converses on equal terms with Prime Ministers and Presidents, a unique representation of a black character on British television at that time. Seretse’s appearance on prime time television, at a period when black performers in the media were invariably confined to little more than token characters, is therefore worthy of further attention. This paper examines how Seretse represents a different type of black character not previously seen on British television, when compared to the representations of racial problems on other television crime dramas. KEYWORDS Black Representation; British Drama; Cult; Race; Department S; Sir Curtis Seretse Introduction: ITC and Popular British Television Drama ITC (Incorporated Television Programme Co.) was founded in 1954 by the theatrical businessmen Lew Grade, Leslie Grade, Prince Littler and Val Parnell. The company was setup to bid for the new Independent Television franchises following the publication of the newly elected Conservative government’s Television Bill. The Bill was intended, as Scannell (1990) has noted, ‘to establish commercial television, funded by advertising’ (17) that would also become an alternative broadcaster to the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), which had, up until this time, held the monopoly of British television.

The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller 10-30-09 TITLE UP: THE FOLLOWING IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY FADE IN: A series of shots of a pristine, classic American small town. Something straight out of Pleasantville. --People walk down the street and say smiling goodmornings as they pass each other. --A milkman drops off milk to a white picket fenced house --Children ride their bikes to school -- People exit a bakery with fresh rolls. We continue to pan and find the man, Gary, laying in bed peacefully asleep, a contented smile on his face. THE ALARM GOES OFF. Gary lazily wakes up. GARY Walter! Wake up!
