Fish Fauna of the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia - Including the Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Ngarinyin, Nyikina and Walmajarri Aboriginal Names

A total of 37 fish species were recorded in the 70 sites sampled. Twenty-three of these species are freshwater fishes (i.e. they complete their life-cycle in freshwater), the remainder being of estuarine or marine origin that may spend part of their life-cycle in freshwater. The number of freshwater species in the Fitzroy River is high by Australian standards. Three of the freshwater fish species recorded ar'e currently undescribed, and two have no formal common or scientific names, but do have Aboriginal names. Where possible, the English (common), scientific and Aboriginal names for the different speCIes of the river are given. This includes the Aboriginal names of the fish for the following five languages (Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Ngarinyin, Nyikina and Walmajarri) of the Fitzroy River Valley. The fish fauna of the river was shown to be significantly different between each of the lower, middle and upper reaches of the main channeL Furthermore, the smaller tributaries and the upper gorge country sites were significantly different to those in the main channel, while the major billabongs of the river had fish assemblages significantly different to all sites with the exception of the middle reaches of the river. -

We have divided the Kimberley into six subregions: Ord catchment, Fitzroy catchment, and the Dampier Peninsula, North Kimberley, La Grange, and Desert subregions. As a working draft for the North Kimberley subregion, this paper requires review and input from stakeholders. It may contain omissions or outdated information so it should not be cited or used for other purposes outside of this planning process. The key issues identified in this draft paper have been drawn from a range of documents, forums and discussion with stakeholders. Coverage of these issues may not be comprehensive, so they will be reconsidered after consultation with key stakeholder groups. This discussion paper, and feedback provided by stakeholders, will be reworked and incorporated into the final Kimberley regional water plan. -

Gibb River Road Gorges
Draft Notes: Gibb River Rd Gorges: June 14-28, 2020 This draft is based on our 2018 notes. We know there will be some changes but we are not yet certain what they will be. While we cannot yet give final details, we can say that the trip will include some of the following. Some are things we have done before. Some will be new. The trip will be divided into two sections, Kununurra to xxx, 9-16 June and xxx to Mt Elizabeth and then fly Kununurra, 16 - 23 June. At this point, we cannot say where xxx will be. On previous trips, we have driven all the way from Kununurra to somewhere near Barnett Gorge, a very long drive. We’ll definitely have at least one stop before then. We will include some of the following – we can’t include them all in a mere two weeks. Which ones we choose will depend on permissions and on what we believe is the best combination. As we already know that the connecting Charnley trip will run, we can say that we will finish at the Mt Elizabeth campground, ready for a flight back to Kununurra the next morning. The following list is east to west. As above, we will double back to get to Mt Elizabeth so the order will be different. • Cockburn Range • El Questro • Barnett Gorge • Manning Gorge • Galvans Gorge and the Upper Isdell Gorge • Charnley River Wilderness Camp • Mornington • Bell Gorge and Falls • Lennard Gorge • Windjana Gorge Now the details. Cockburn Range. While we can’t do the one week walk we used to do, we can do a one night above Emma Gorge. -
Stage 11 Pilbara to Kununurra (Including Gibb River Road)
Stage 11 Pilbara to Kununurra (including Gibb River Road) 30 to 3 June Karratha We enjoyed having those days in Karratha to wash the van, and to have a haircut, catch up on newspapers etc. Had a look out at Cleaverville (a camp site on the coast near Karratha, council owned, lovely but busy as!) and Point Samson. There is a new and very nice park out at Point Samson which we may stay at next time… 4 June De Grey River Rest Stop 82 kms NE of Port Hedland 20 18 30 S 119 14 57 E What a lovely spot this is! Green grassy sites spread along the De Grey River (which had lots of water when we were there). There must be room for well spaced 20 or so sites. But on this night, there would have been about 30 or more sets of vans and vehicles. A feature of the spot was all the pumpkin vines with maturing pumpkins. After dark a large truck came down the hill into one of the sites along the river, and the driver asked the van owner to unhitch his vehicle so the truck could access the river to pump water…the van owner told him to get lost! With a bit of arguing backwards and forwards, the defeated truck driver had to back out of a curved road in the pitch black and up a hill to retreat. Cheeky bugger. 5 to 8 June Broome Advice from many people was to stay at the Cable Beach CP, and it was good advice. -

Durack River and Karunjie Stations Western Australia 26 May–5 June 2014 Bush Blitz species discovery program Durack River and Karunjie Stations 26 May–5 June 2014 What is Bush Blitz? Bush Blitz is a multi-million dollar partnership between the Australian Government, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities and Earthwatch Australia to document plants and animals in selected properties across Australia. This innovative partnership harnesses the expertise of many of Australia’s top scientists from museums, herbaria, universities, and other institutions and organisations across the country. These former pastoral properties are located along the Gibb River Road within the Pentecost River Catchment. The Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) purchased the properties along with the neighbouring Home Valley Station and opened a pastoral, tourism and indigenous training centre in 2008. The Kimberley is one of the most ecologically important regions of Australia. Collecting occurred within a relatively dry corridor running north to south through the eastern Kimberley, which is less well known than the wetter parts of the western Kimberley or the area between Kununurra and the Northern Territory border. -
