  • Hershey – a Model Town
One Man’s Vision HERSHEY A Model Town Planning the Model Town “A Model Town, a modern factory, a sub- stantial business-these are the realiza- tions of one businessman s dreams.*” Milton Hershey’s chocolate company was ten years old by the time the new factory was completed in 1904. The chocolate business grew out of Mr. Hershey’s very success- ful Lancaster, Pennsylvania caramel company. While attending the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Milton Hershey watched a demonstration of German choco- late-making equipment. Mindful of the popularity of his chocolate flavored caramels, Mr. Hershey purchased the machinery and began manufacturing cocoa and chocolate confections. In 1900 he sold his Lancaster caramel compa- ny in order to concentrate exclusively on his flourishing chocolate business. By 1901 Milton Hershey’s chocolate business had outgrown his original factory in Lancaster. Mr. Hershey considered sites in Lancaster, Baltimore, New Jersey and New York for his new factory. In the end, however, he decided to located the factory in the countryside and chose his birthplace, Derry Township. *Joseph Solomon, THE BUSINESS WORLD, June 1903 Front Cover: Chocolate Avenue, Hershey’s main thor- oughfare. ca. 1920-1930 Left: Hershey Quick Lunch, adjoining the Cocoa House, offered luncheonette style meals. ca. 1915 Above: An aerial view of Hershey Park and its wide variety of amusements. 1915 Right: Laying the foundation of the chocolate factory. 1903 Planning the Model Town “The location chosen for the new town is an admirable one.*” Milton Hershey picked rural Derry Township against the advice of friends and business associates.

  • Annual Stockholder Meeting Q and A
The Hershey Company 2021 Annual Meeting of Stockholders Q&A 1.) What is the long-term strategy for mix of business between Candy and Better-for-you snacks? First, let me emphasize that candy is and will remain our #1 priority. This company is comprised of iconic candy brands and they are a key component of our future growth strategy. And we will continue to invest in them because consumers love great tasting indulgent snacks. And as a reminder, because of our strength in confection, we are the #2 snacking player in the U.S. It’s our goal to capture more opportunity by expanding our portfolio of products to engage with our consumers who are snacking throughout the day, and who may be looking for savory or better-for- you snacks as well as the portfolio of products that we currently offer. We are fortunate to have the financial flexibility to not only invest in our candy brands, as we always have, and deliver strong returns to our shareholders at the same time, but to also invest in capturing these new incremental snacking occasions. Our long term aspiration is for our snacking portfolio to represent approximately 15-20% of our global sales. 2.) When will Hershey offer a greater selection of sugar free chocolate products? We know there is a growing number of consumers that are looking for great tasting treats with less sugar. As the #1 U.S. confection manufacturer, we are focused on leading the category to make better-for-you candy more affordable and accessible for everyone.
