Foundations of Newtonian Dynamics: 1 An Axiomatic Approach for the Thinking Student C. J. Papachristou 2 Department of Physical Sciences, Hellenic Naval Academy, Piraeus 18539, Greece Abstract. Despite its apparent simplicity, Newtonian mechanics contains conceptual subtleties that may cause some confusion to the deep-thinking student. These subtle- ties concern fundamental issues such as, e.g., the number of independent laws needed to formulate the theory, or, the distinction between genuine physical laws and deriva- tive theorems. This article attempts to clarify these issues for the benefit of the stu- dent by revisiting the foundations of Newtonian dynamics and by proposing a rigor- ous axiomatic approach to the subject. This theoretical scheme is built upon two fun- damental postulates, namely, conservation of momentum and superposition property for interactions. Newton’s laws, as well as all familiar theorems of mechanics, are shown to follow from these basic principles. 1. Introduction Teaching introductory mechanics can be a major challenge, especially in a class of students that are not willing to take anything for granted! The problem is that, even some of the most prestigious textbooks on the subject may leave the student with some degree of confusion, which manifests itself in questions like the following: • Is the law of inertia (Newton’s first law) a law of motion (of free bodies) or is it a statement of existence (of inertial reference frames)? • Are the first two of Newton’s laws independent of each other? Motion is the translation of a body from the place it occupies to another place. Truly rest is a body remaining at the same place. Corollary 1. 2. Therefore the ideas of the body remaining at rest and of moving to other places cannot be entertained together, except that they occupy a place. Whereby the place or position the body occupies shall be a property of the body, that can be said to be possible only for that body, and that the body is either moving or at rest. Corollary 2. 3. And this idea of moving or of being at rest is a property of a body that relates to all bodies. For no body is able to exist that is neither moving nor at rest. DEFINITION 2. 4. The place [occupied by a body] is a part of the immense or boundless space which constitutes the whole world. In this sense the accepted place is accustomed to be called the absolute place [p. 2], in order that it may be distinguished from a relative place, of which mention will soon be made. Corollary 1. 5. Therefore, when a body occupies successively one part and then another, of this immense space, then it is said to be moving ; but if it continues to be present at the same place always, then it is said to be at rest. Despite the long-held view that science only deals with brute facts and does not require rhetoric, we learn that science has its own special topics. This study highlights the rhetorical situation of the Principia and Newton’s rhetorical strategies, emphasizing the belief that scientific facts and theories are also rhetorical constructions. This analysis shows that the credibility of the author and the text, the emotional debates before and after the publication of the text, the construction of logical arguments, and the presentation style makes the book the epitome of scientific writing. -

The Newton-Leibniz Controversy Over the Invention of the Calculus
The Newton-Leibniz controversy over the invention of the calculus S.Subramanya Sastry 1 Introduction Perhaps one the most infamous controversies in the history of science is the one between Newton and Leibniz over the invention of the infinitesimal calculus. During the 17th century, debates between philosophers over priority issues were dime-a-dozen. Inspite of the fact that priority disputes between scientists were ¡ common, many contemporaries of Newton and Leibniz found the quarrel between these two shocking. Probably, what set this particular case apart from the rest was the stature of the men involved, the significance of the work that was in contention, the length of time through which the controversy extended, and the sheer intensity of the dispute. Newton and Leibniz were at war in the later parts of their lives over a number of issues. Though the dispute was sparked off by the issue of priority over the invention of the calculus, the matter was made worse by the fact that they did not see eye to eye on the matter of the natural philosophy of the world. Newton’s action-at-a-distance theory of gravitation was viewed as a reversion to the times of occultism by Leibniz and many other mechanical philosophers of this era. This intermingling of philosophical issues with the priority issues over the invention of the calculus worsened the nature of the dispute. One of the reasons why the dispute assumed such alarming proportions and why both Newton and Leibniz were anxious to be considered the inventors of the calculus was because of the prevailing 17th century conventions about priority and attitude towards plagiarism. -

Newton’s Legacy Newton brought to a close the astronomical revolution begun by Copernicus. He combined the dynamic research of Galileo with the astronomical work of Kepler. He produced an entirely new cosmology and a new way of thinking about the world, based on the interaction between matter and mathematically determinate forces. He joined the mathematical and experimental methods: the hypothetico-deductive method. His work became the model for rational mechanics as it was later practiced by mathematicians, particularly during the Enlightenment. LE201, History and Philosophy of Science Newton . Newton’s De Motu coporum in gyrum Edmond Halley (of the comet) visited Cambridge in 1684 and 1 talked with Newton about inverse-square forces (F 9 d2 ). Newton stated that he has already shown that inverse-square force implied an ellipse, but could not find the documents. Later he rewrote this into a short document called De Motu coporum in gyrum, and sent it to Halley. Halley was excited and asked for a full treatment of the subject. Two years later Newton sent Book I of The Mathematical Principals of Natural Philosophy (Principia). Key Point The goal of this project was to derive the orbits of bodies from a simpler set of assumptions about motion. That is, it sought to explain Kepler’s Laws with a simpler set of laws. -

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION The law of INERTIA INERTIA - describes how much an object tries to resist a change in motion (resist a force) inertia increases with mass INERTIA EXAMPLES Ex- takes more force to stop a bowling ball than a basket ball going the same speed (bowling ball tries more to keep going at a constant speed- resists stopping) Ex- it takes more force to lift a full backpack than an empty one (full backpack tries to stay still more- resists moving ; it has more inertia) What the law of inertia says…. AKA Newton’s First Law of Motion An object at rest, stays at rest Because the net force is zero! Forces are balanced (equal & opposite) …an object in motion, stays in motion Motion means going at a constant speed & in a straight line The net force is zero on this object too! NO ACCELERATION! …unless acted upon by a net force. Only when this happens will you get acceleration! (speed or direction changes) Forces are unbalanced now- not all equal and opposite there is a net force> 0N! You have overcome the object’s inertia! How does a traveling object move once all the forces on it are balanced? at a constant speed in a straight line Why don’t things just move at a constant speed in a straight line forever then on Earth? FRICTION! Opposes the motion & slows things down or GRAVITY if motion is in up/down direction These make the forces unbalanced on the object & cause acceleration We can’t get away from those forces on Earth! Copyright c Helge Kragh, 2012 1 Newtonianism in the Scandinavian Countries, 1690-1790 HELGE KRAGH 1 Introduction In the present context, the Scandinavian countries refer to two national or administrative units, the one being Denmark and the other Sweden. In the period here considered, largely the century from 1690 to 1790, ‘Denmark’ means really Denmark-Norway, for until 1814 Norway was part of the double monarchy ruled by the king and his government in Copenhagen. It should also be kept in mind that parts of what is today Germany, namely Schleswig-Holstein, belonged to the kingdom. However, as far as language and culture were concerned, these parts of southern Denmark were more German than Danish, and they played no important role in the scientific life of the kingdom. Sweden covered a much larger geographical area than it does today. The country had expanded greatly during the seventeenth century, when not only Finland but also parts of the Baltic area and northern Germany came under Swedish rule. About 1720, after the Great Northern War, Sweden lost most of its possessions, but the major part of Finland remained as part of the country until Centre for Science Studies, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark. -
Newton's First Law of Motion
Mechanics 2.1. Newton’s first law of motion mc-web-mech2-1-2009 Sir Isaac Newton aimed to describe and predict the movement of every object in the Universe using his three laws of motion. Like many other ‘laws’ they give the right answers for the majority of the time. For example, the paths of planets, moons and satellites are all calculated using Newton’s laws. Newton’s first law of motion Newton’s first law of motion states that a body will stay at rest or move with constant velocity unless a resultant external force acts on it. Note: Moving in a straight line at a constant speed, in other words, moving at a constant velocity is commonly referred to as uniform motion. There are two consequences of this law: 1. If a body has an acceleration, then there must be a resultant force acting on it. 2. If a body has no acceleration, then the forces acting on it must be in equilibrium (have zero resultant force). At first glance this law would appear contrary to everyday experience: give an object a push to set it in motion - then, it will slow down and come to rest - it does not ‘continue in a state of uniform motion’. This is due to unseen resistive forces of friction and air resistance opposing the motion. (Figure 1). It is the property discussed in Newton’s first law, sometimes known as the principle of inertia. -
Newtonianism and the Physics of Du Châtelet's Institutions De Physique

Newtonianism and the physics of Du Châtelet’s Institutions de physique Marius Stan This paper is about two things that cross paths. One is the many senses of the category ‘Newtonian,’ and their uses for exegesis. The other is the phys- ics that Emilie du Châtelet grounded philosophically around 1740 in her book, Institutions de physique. I offer it as a tribute to Moti Feingold’s mag- isterial work on how the century after Newton responded to his science. I begin with some context. Many have described Institutions as a work of Leibnizian foundations for Newtonian science. An inspiring image, no doubt, but is it accurate? I argue here that it is not: little physics in her book is really Newtonian. Most of her physics is from figures before Newton; and even when she includes his results, du Châtelet filters them through demonstrably un-Newtonian ideas. So, we must abandon the conventional wisdom about her science.1 1 In the 20th century, the dominant view became that Institutions is concerned with “merg- ing Leibnizianism and Newtonianism”; is a “marriage between Leibnizian metaphysics and Newtonian science”; is an “introduction to Newtonian physics” attesting du Châtelet’s conversion to “Leibnizian metaphysics”; mediates “between Leibniz and Newton”; is a landmark document in the “history of French Newtonianism” and yet “framed according to Leibnizian principles.” Allegedly it is a “fusion of Newton, Descartes, and Leibniz,” and it synthesizes “Newtonian physics” and “Leibnizian metaphysics.” So pervasive is it that it has seeped into the broader consciousness of Anglophone academia.
