The importance of the Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks to Arkansas K-12 education cannot be overlooked. Parents and educators readily agree on the importance of developing reading, writing and math skills. They even agree in our technological society on the importance of teaching science, but what about social studies? It is through the study of social studies that students become aware of the world around them and how that world directly impacts their lives. By learning about economics, civics and government, geography and history, students are able to develop core beliefs and values, an understanding of how the past has shaped the present and will shape the future, and the interconnectedness of the content areas.

Department of the Interior, Bureau of Education, Washington. Sir: Many students apply for admission to higher institutions in other States and sections than those in which they have received their high-school preparation. Many also seek certificates from ex¬ amining and licensing boards, which have no direct means of know¬ ing the standards of the schools from which the applicants come. The demand for this information led the Bureau of Education, first in the spring of 1913 and again in the autumn of 1914, to undertake the collection and preparation of lists of high schools and academies accredited by State universities, approved by State departments of education, or recognized by examining and certifying boards and by certain other agencies. The demand proved to be even greater than had been anticipated. The first edition of the bulletin was soon exhausted. There have be^n many requests from college and uni¬ versity officers for copies of the second edition. Moreover, changes are made in these lists of accredited schools from year to year.

A.C.A. § 6-21-112 further states that “a report on the state Academic Facilities Master Plan will be made to the Governor, the House Committee on Education, the Senate Committee on Education, and the Academic Facilities Oversight Committee by October 1 of each even numbered year”. The state Master Plan documents the state’s role to provide guidance through manuals, rules, and funding programs to raise the level of the academic facilities in the state of Arkansas through repair and new construction programs in conformance with those manuals and rules. The compilation of the individual school district Master Plans, which must be approved by the state, details the state’s plan to achieve suitable and adequate facilities for all Arkansas school districts. Pursuant to this statute, Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) staff is required to monitor the faculty evaluation processes adopted at public institutions, and make a report to the Coordinating Board and Legislative Council each year. Each institution must have on file with ADHE a plan detailing the procedures for faculty evaluation at each institution. Significant amendments to these plans are to be submitted for Board approval. Institutions were required to submit a report to ADHE that describes the process followed during the 2018-2019 academic year. Those reports are summarized below. Faculty Performance Review Activities Faculty performance was assessed using a variety of methods including assessment by students, classroom visits by administrators, peer review, and self-evaluation activities. Findings were shared with faculty members being evaluated and, when appropriate, an improvement plan was jointly developed between the faculty member and the administrator who conducted the evaluation.
