The first white working class roundtable, held in June 2014, brought together 15 leading pro-Democratic strategists and observers to discuss the subject of “progressives and the white working class” and had a very significant effect on the national debate regarding the white working class vote that emerged after the 2014 elections. The roundtable was directly cited by Thomas Edsall in The New York Times, E.J. Dionne in The Washington Post, Noam Scheiber in The New Republic, Kevin Drum in Mother Jones, Jamelle Bouie in Slate and was cited by many other commentaries that used data and quotes drawn from the contributions to the June 2014 roundtable discussion. As a follow-up to this debate, The Democratic Strategist published an in-depth review of the post-2014 discussion in December, 2014. His Excellency Dr. Giuliano Amato the Honorable Mohammed Haneef
His Excellency Dr. Giuliano Amato Interior Minister of Italy Giuliano Amato, who was a professor of Italian and comparative constitutional law at the University of Rome La Sapienza, began his political career in 1958 when he joined the Italian Socialist Party. For a decade, from 1983 to 1993, Dr. Amato was an Italian MP serving in many different capacities, including being Under Secretary of State, Deputy Prime Minister and Treasury Minister. In June 1992, he became Prime Minister, a position he held until April 1993. After a short hiatus from politics, he became the president of the Italian antitrust authority in 1994. In 1998, he became the Minister for Institutional Reforms; in 1999, served as the Treasury Minister once again; and in 2000, became Prime Minister for a second time. He then served as a Senator from 2001 until 2006, when he became Italy’s Interior Minister. Additionally, in 2001, EU leaders at the European Council in Laeken appointed Dr. Amato to be Vice President of the Convention on the Future of Europe, along with former Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene, charged to help draft the new European Constitution. The Honorable Mohammed Haneef Atmar Education Minister of Afghanistan Mohammed Haneef Atmar became the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Education Minister in May 2006. Prior to that, Minister Atmar served in President Karzai’s cabinet from 2002 to 2005 as the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. He is also one of eight members of the Presidential Oversight Committee, which acts as a monitoring body over the development of Afghan national strategies and the implementation of the Afghanistan Compact. -

FORGING A NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY: THE POLITICS OF THE THIRD WAY FROM CLINTON TO OBAMA CURTIS ATKINS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN POLITICAL SCIENCE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO May 2015 © Curtis Atkins 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the evolution of the American Democratic Party’s ideological orientation from 1985 to 2014. The central problem is to develop an understanding of how shifts in political-economic context and factional agency combine to produce alterations in the predominant ideology of a U.S. political party. The primary question posed is how the centrist perspective known as the ‘third way’ replaced the left-liberalism of the New Deal and Great Society eras as the guiding public philosophy of the Democratic Party. Whereas many scholars propose that the modern third way revisionism of center-left parties is explained primarily as electoral opportunism or as an adoption of the political logic of the New Right, this study focuses on how changes in political economy (particularly the transition from Keynesianism to neoliberalism) prompted the elaboration of an alternative ideological framework that sought to adapt to new times. In the U.S. case, the primary agent of this process of ideological reorientation was the New Democrat faction, most well-known for its connection to President Bill Clinton. Combining qualitative document analysis and focused interviews with personnel from the think-tanks and policy institutes of the New Democrat faction and its competitors, the dissertation finds that the initiation and maintenance of reorientation is dependent on a faction’s success in elaborating and continually ‘decontesting’ an alternative framework that de-legitimatizes a party’s pre-existing ideological commitments. -

(@dredoli) 57 STANLEY GREENBERG Conocí a Stanley Bernard Greenberg en Bilbao, el jueves 17 de junio de 2010, cuando impartió la conferencia inaugural del I Encuentro Internacional de la Asociación de Comunicación Política (ACOP). El título de su conferencia: “Lo que aprendí de los líderes internacionales: Los mejores consejos para hacer campaña y para gobernar”. Fue en ese momento cuando me di cuenta de que estaba ante uno de los más grandes asesores políticos estadounidenses. Una leyenda viva. Un icono de la política norteamericana que, como suele suceder con aquellos que son gigantes de verdad, se mostró cercano y amigable, sin pretensiones de ningún tipo. Un hombre sencillo a quien todo el mundo llamaba “Stan”. Sirva esta reseña para describir quién es Stan. En primer lugar, cabe decir sobre él que es un histórico asesor del Partido Demócrata estadounidense. Y, en segundo lugar, puede decirse que su trayectoria profesional se define en tres palabras: brillante estratega político. Stan Greenberg ha asesorado las campañas de Bill Clinton, Al Gore y John Kerry, así como a decenas de candidatos en Estados Unidos, América Latina, África y Europa, incluyendo a Gerhard Schröder, a Nelson Mandela y a Tony Blair, por ejemplo. The activities of the various groups and individuals described in this complaint demonstrate a massive conspiracy to corrupt 'the federal campaign . finance system. These groups and individuals described herein have conspired to circumvent the law by creating a network of newly formed 527 political organizations working in complicity with other long established special interest groups and wealthy individuals to illegally raise and spend soft money while illegally coordinating their efforts in violation of 1 1 C.F.R. 8 109.2 1, all with the express purpose of defeating President Bush. This massive ongoing effort has resulted in numerous violations of the Act. These illegal activities are ongoing. It is clear from their own statements that these special interest groups and individuals will not stop their illegal efforts, especially . since the Commission's powers do not include any relief that can be afforded until long after the election. Even if the Commission were to expedite its proceedings, the administrative process under which the Commission must operate does not include timely relief. See 2 USC 5 437g (a). No penalty, civil or criminal, after the fact could possibly remedy the irreparable I' harm caused by allowing this illegal activity to continue unabated.
