Anti-predator behavior in Birds: Reactions to Raptor Calls Robin Elahi Department of Biology, Northeastern University _____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Birds display a number of defense mechanisms against their predators, including camouflage, mobbing, fleeing, and aggregational behavior. I studied the responses of 32 bird species to songbird and raptor calls to see if birds displayed anti-predator behavior in response to raptor calls in comparison with songbird calls. One focus of my study was avian defensive strategies, namely flocking and concealment, so observations took into consideration different conditions: whether the bird was solitary or in a group, and whether it was exposed or hidden in vegetation. A previous study showed that crows could distinguish between raptor calls of their predators and non-predators, so I examined if birds specifically recognized resident raptors, or if they had a general response to resident and non-resident raptor calls. I also attempted to correlate bird size with reaction, specifically to see if smaller birds flew away more often than larger birds due to a greater perceived threat. For each bird or group of birds. I played a songbird call, followed by a raptor call, and timed the raptor call to see how long the bird stayed till it flew away. Birds flew away 27% of the time in response to raptor calls, and only 3% of the time to songbird calls (X² = 16.11, df = 1, n = 26). Birds did not distinguish among resident and non-resident raptor calls, and had nearly equal flight frequencies (X² = 0.48, df =3, n=40). Trends showed that solitary and exposed birds tended to fly more often than birds in groups and hidden birds. -

Day 1 Monday 29th January UK to Quito People arrived in Quito via Amsterdam with KLM or via Madrid with Iberia, while Tony came separately from the USA. Everyone was met at the airport and taken to the Hotel Vieja Cuba; those who were awake enough went out to eat before a good night’s rest. Day 2 Tuesday 30th January Quito. Weather: Hot and mostly sunny. The early risers saw the first few birds of the trip outside the hotel: Rufous- collared Sparrow, Great Thrush and Eared Doves. After breakfast, an excellent guide took us on a bus and walking tour of Quito’s old town. This started with the Basilica del Voto Nacional, where everyone marvelled at the “grotesques” of native Ecuadorian animals such as frigatebirds, iguanas and tortoises. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Diploid number ranges between 2n = 66 and 2n = 68. Only one species, L. albicollis had its karyotype analyzed by molecular cytogenetics. The aim of this study was to present chromosomal analysis of three species of Buteoninae: Rupornis magnirostris, Asturina nitida and Buteogallus meridionallis using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments with telomeric and rDNA probes, as well as whole chromosome probes derived from Gallus gallus and Leucopternis albicollis. The three species analyzed herein showed similar karyotypes, with 2n = 68. Telomeric probes showed some interstitial telomeric sequences, which could be resulted by fusion processes occurred in the chromosomal evolution of the group, including the one found in the tassociation GGA1p/GGA6. -

TOPICS IN IDENTIFICATION he Solitary Eagle ( Harpyhaliaetus solitarius ) is a large raptor that is closely related and similar in adult and immature plum- Tages to the black-hawks in the genus Buteogallus (Lerner and Mindell 2005). It is a rare and very local resident in a variety of wet and dry forested hills and highlands from northern Argentina to northern Mexico (del Hoyo et al. 1994, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001). The species has been collected in Mexico not far from the Texas border (see Discussion, pp. 72 –73), so it is possible that it has occurred in the ABA Area. The handful of specimens and nest records of this eagle are from 700 to 2,000 meters above sea level (Brown and Amadon 1968). The information ranges from strategic, national assessments of coastal and estuarine environmental quality to real-time information for navigation or hazardous materials spill response. Through its National Status and Trends (NS&T) Program, ORCA uses uniform techniques to monitor toxic chemical contamination of bottom-feeding fish, mussels and oysters, and sediments at about 300 locations throughout the United States. A related NS&T Program of directed research examines the relationships between contaminant exposure and indicators of biological responses in fish and shellfish. Through the Hazardous Materials Response and Assessment Division (HAZMAT) Scientific Support Coordination program, ORCA provides critical scientific support for planning and responding to spills of oil or hazardous materials into coastal environments. Technical guidance includes spill trajectory predictions, chemical hazard analyses, and assessments of the sensitivity of marine and estuarine environments to spills.
