Summary of SWIFT: Standard with Fantunes Summary of SWIFT: Standard WIth FanTunes Richard Granville, July 2013. This document may be freely copied and distributed. The world class pair Fulvio Fantoni and Claudio Nunes play a system called Fantunes, in which 2-level suit openings are natural and limited, while 1-level suit openings are unlimited, forcing and also essentially natural. The SWIFT system is derived from Fantunes and other sources, but is less complicated and more similar to Acol or SAYC. Table of opening bids: Opening Requirements 1♣ 13+ unbalanced, either 5+ clubs or 4441 with singleton diamond. Can also be 15-19 or 22-23 balanced. F1R. 1♦ 13+ unbalanced, either 5+ diamonds or 4441 with 4 diamonds. Can also be 24+ balanced. F1R. 1♥, 1♠ 5+ card suit, 13+ points. F1R. 1NT 12-14 balanced. Might have a 5 card major if 12-13, or a singleton honour if 4441 and 13-14. 2 of a suit 9-12, 6+ card suit or 5 cards with another 4+ card suit. May be weaker if 3rd in hand, especially non-vulnerable. 2NT 20-21 balanced – may have a 5 card major. Other bids As in Acol. “13+” assumes 6 card suit or 5-4 (i.e. rule of 22, a queen more than Acol). Similarly, 2 of a suit is rule of 18-21. Table of responses to 1♣: Response Requirements Summary of opener’s rebids 1♦ Either: 0-5 points, any distribution (unless qualifying for 1♥ or 1♠ may be balanced or unbalanced. 2♥/2♠); Or: 6-10 points, no 4 card major, unsuitable for a 1NT 15-19, 2NT 22-23, 2♣ limited with clubs. 1NT, 2NT, 3♣ or 3♦ response. Natural. 3♣ 6-8, 4+ diamonds (Bergen-style: fills gap between 2♦ and 3♦). 3♦ minimum, 3♥/3♠ stoppers. 3♦ 0-5, 5+ diamonds. 3♥/3♠ stoppers. 3NT 11-13 balanced, stoppers in unbid suits, 3-3-3-4 or 3-3-4-3 Natural. distribution. Table of responses to 1♥: Response Requirements Summary of opener’s rebids 1♠ 0-10 points, F1R, denies 5 spades. Might have 3 hearts with Opener bids 1NT (Gazzilli) with either spades 0-4 or 9-10 points. or extra values. Other rebids are essentially natural and limited. 1NT 0+ points, F1R, 5+ spades. (This and the 1♠ response form Opener bids 2♣ (Gazzilli) with either clubs or the “Kaplan Interchange”.) extra values. Other rebids are essentially natural and limited. 2♣ 11+, GF, either clubs or balanced. 2♦ denies 6 hearts or a 5 card minor. Other rebids are natural. 2NT shows 14-15 balanced. 2♦ 11+, GF, 5+ card suit. Natural. 2♥ 5-8, 3 card support. Trial bids. 2♠ 0-4, 6 card suit. 2NT is an Ogust relay. 2NT Jacoby, GF, 11+, 4+ card support. Opener shows shortage at 3 level. 3♣ Bergen, 8-10 (including shortage points), 4+ card support. 3♦ is a generalised game try. 3♦ Bergen, 6-7 (including shortage points), 4+ card support. Cue bids. 3♥ Pre-emptive, 1-5 (including shortage points), 4+ card support. Cue bids. 3♠/4♣/4♦ Splinter bids, 4+ card support. Natural. 3NT 11-13, stoppers in unbid suits, 3-3-3-4 or 3-3-4-3 distribution. Natural. Shortage points with 4+ card support: doubleton = 1, singleton = 3, void = 5. Over a 1♠ opening, 1NT shows 0-10 points. After this opener may pass with a balanced minimum, or use 2♣ (Gazzilli). A 3♥ response to 1♠ is natural and invitational. Other responses are similar to the above. Gazzilli: responder makes cheapest bid with any 7+ points. Other rebids are essentially natural with 0-6 points. One could play a more natural scheme of responses to 1♥ and 1♠, along the lines of Acol or SAYC, but this makes it difficult to describe strong hands effectively. The combination of Two over One GF, Kaplan Interchange and Gazzilli works much better. .

  • Slam Bidding Lesson
Slam Bidding and Modified Scroll Bids By Neil H. Timm In this Bridge Bit, I explore more fully Slam bidding techniques, some old and some perhaps new. To reach a small slam, the partnership should have roughly thirty-three Bergen points. In addition to a trump fit and count, slams require controls (aces, kings, voids, and singletons). The more controls between the partners, the easier the slam. To evaluate whether or not the partnership has the required controls, one uses cuebids with perhaps the 5NT trump ask bid (Grand Slam Force), and Blackwood Conventions. Blackwood Conventions reveal how many aces and kings, while cuebidding or control showing bids reveal where they reside. To make a slam, one usually requires first-round control in three suits and second round control in the fourth suit. It is possible to make a slam missing two aces, provided the missing ace is opposite a void, and the second missing ace is replaced by or is opposite a second-round control (a king or a singleton). When looking for a possible slam, one often asks the following questions. 1. What cards should my partner have to be able to make a slam? 2. How may I obtain the required information? 3. Are there any bidding techniques or conventions that I can use to obtain the required information? 4. If my partner does not have the required cards for a slam, can I stop short of slam, and if not is the risk of going down worth it? We shall review techniques to help the partnership find the required information for making a slam! However, with some hands one needs only to count points to reach a slam.
