The HCP minimum for an opening one bid is only a guideline; a hand with much "playing strength" for example, a hand rich in Fantunes Revealed and kings, long suits or a solid pattern of sequential cards can be opened one of suit with fewer HCP. Here are three examples where they opened one of a Fantunes Revealed without 14 HCP. Opening one notrump 1NT means 12—14 HCP and a balanced or semi-balanced hand, possibly a singleton with three four-cards suits Fantunes Revealed can include a five-card major.     Slam Bidding and Modified Scroll Bids By Neil H. Timm In this Bridge Bit, I explore more fully Slam bidding techniques, some old and some perhaps new. To reach a small slam, the partnership should have roughly thirty-three Bergen points. In addition to a trump fit and count, slams require controls (aces, kings, voids, and singletons). The more controls between the partners, the easier the slam. To evaluate whether or not the partnership has the required controls, one uses cuebids with perhaps the 5NT trump ask bid (Grand Slam Force), and Blackwood Conventions. Blackwood Conventions reveal how many aces and kings, while cuebidding or control showing bids reveal where they reside. To make a slam, one usually requires first-round control in three suits and second round control in the fourth suit. It is possible to make a slam missing two aces, provided the missing ace is opposite a void, and the second missing ace is replaced by or is opposite a second-round control (a king or a singleton). When looking for a possible slam, one often asks the following questions. 1. What cards should my partner have to be able to make a slam? 2. How may I obtain the required information? 3. Are there any bidding techniques or conventions that I can use to obtain the required information? 4. If my partner does not have the required cards for a slam, can I stop short of slam, and if not is the risk of going down worth it? We shall review techniques to help the partnership find the required information for making a slam! However, with some hands one needs only to count points to reach a slam.

    Inverted Minors Theory The Inverted Minor treatment is a virtually integral part of the Two-Over-One Game Force system, but it can be employed in many systems. The underlying principle, as in 2/1, is that the bidding should be escalated quickly with weaker, pre-emptive hands, and that the bidding be kept low on strong hands in order to properly investigate the proper game or slam contract. General Treatment A jump raise of partner's opening 1-level minor suit opening (suit of 3+ cards) is a pre-emptive bid and promises 5+ card support and a limited hand (less than 9 support points). It strongly discourages further exploration of game contracts (except by a very strong opener). A single raise of partner's opening 1-level minor suit opening is a strong bid; it is forcing to (at least) three of that minor and is strongly suggestive of a game in either NoTrump or in the suit. It is an unlimited bid. If the partnership agrees, a jump shift into the other minor suit may be used as a limit raise of the suit opened ("criss-cross"). A sequence of 1♣ - 2♦, or a sequence of 1♦ - 3♣ would then promise 5+ card support for the suit opened and 9-12 support points. It says nothing about the suit bid. In this case, the single raise is reserved for hands that contain a full opening hand. This permits a better distinction of the ultimate contract. Inverted minor raises are not used when the opponents overcall (or double) the opening bid.

Following a welcome from E. Michael Jones, the resplendent Town Crier of St. George's, the audience was entertained in splendid sty le by The Bermuda Regiment under the direction of Major Barrett Dill, and the spectacular dance troupe, Gombey Magic. Master of Ceremonies David Ezekiel was the link man 'par excellence' as he introduced The Honourable Jennifer Smith, J.P. M.P. Premier of Bermuda, The Honourable Alex Scott, J.P. M.P. Acting Minister of Tourism, Geoffrey Gardner, Director, Orbis Investment Management Ltd, and Sheena Rayner, President of the Bermuda Bridge Federation. Following an address by the President of the World Bridge Federation, José Damiani, the teams were introduced in alphabetical order. That was fol- lowed by the formal opening of the event by the WBF President, and the unfurling of the WBF flag. This allows us to check on important cards (“Keycards”) and stop below slam if we are missing too many of them. But if we use 4NT to ask for Keycards when a minor is our fit, we will frequently be above game (especially in .) when we are missing two Aces (or Keycards.) This is a problem! Our solution to this is a convention called Minorwood – where we use 4-of-a-minor to ask for Keycards (instead of 4NT.) Note: 4-minor is generally not otherwise that useful of a bid – it is not at game, but it is above 3NT. So using it for a conventional call does not give up much. Minorwood Responses When we bid 4-minor as Minorwood we respond with 1430 steps, just as we did to 4NT. The important thing is to think of these as bids as steps and not attach them to a specific denomination. 4. Precious gold went to Israelis Ehud Friedlander and Inon Liran, winners of the Red Bull Open Pairs. The Senior Pairs title went to Henky Lasut and Eddy Manoppo of Indonesia. Champions of the Women’s Pairs are Shu Liu and Tao Zhou. An interesting note in the Open Pairs is that the average age of the gold, silver and bronze medal winners is 33.
