Golden Anniversary Saturday, 8 January 2000 Jean Paul Meyer, Co-ordinator Mark Horton, Editor Brent Manley & Brian Senior,Assistant Editors Issue: 1 Stelios Hatzidakis, Layout Editor Golden Anniversary The Opening Ceremony of the Orbis World Bridge Championships, under the patronage of Orbis Investment Management Limited and the Ministry of Tourism,Bermuda, was a stupendous affair. Following a welcome from E. Michael Jones, the resplendent Town Crier of St. George's, the audience was entertained in splendid sty le by The Bermuda Regiment under the direction of Major Barrett Dill, and the spectacular dance troupe, Gombey Magic. Master of Ceremonies David Ezekiel was the link man 'par excellence' as he introduced The Honourable Jennifer Smith, J.P. M.P. Premier of Bermuda, The Honourable Alex Scott, J.P. M.P. Acting Minister of Tourism, Geoffrey Gardner, Director, Orbis Investment Management Ltd, and Sheena Rayner, President of the Bermuda Bridge Federation. Following an address by the President of the World Bridge Federation, José Damiani, the teams were introduced in alphabetical order. That was fol- lowed by the formal opening of the event by the WBF President, and the unfurling of the WBF flag.     Your editor asked me to pen a few words about the Seniors Congress at elegant Eastbourne, but time has rolled on through the Riviera Congress at touristy Torquay and the annual week long jamboree that is the EBU Congress in bizarre Brighton. (Please bear in mind that I am not a sun seeker and Gayle and I treat these trips as part of our holidays, but taken in small doses.) We have been playing at these events for some years, and have built up a goodly number of friends and / or teammates with whom it is fun to play, dine and drink. As to the bridge, it really is another world away from club bridge, despite there being the usual 52 cards. Would you double this hand for a Spade lead? North 86 AK7 AJT85 QJ8 AQT4 73 T54 Q963 Q762 94 64 KT732 KJ952 J82 K3 A95 North /South have 27 points – bid to 3NT , but West doubled the contract for a Spade lead. How was West able to tell East that he wanted a Spade lead? West did this because their system allowed them to use a double to call for a lead of the last suit bid by North/South. This happened to be Spades! So how do you make 3NT*, for a top or are you 1 down for a bottom. What’s the fun if we get beaten up like the above hand? We get the chance to play against top players, including England’s World and European champion ladies, and European champion Seniors men, together with a host of other professionals who earn their living from bridge.

    REPORT OF THE FEDERATIONS COMMITTEE The American Contract Bridge League has interaction with many federations in association with the participation of its members in world championships. The most well known of these, and the ones this report will mention, are the World Bridge Federation, the United States Bridge Federation, and the Canadian Bridge Federation. The Mexican Bridge Federation is also involved in such championships, but Mexico actually sends a team to world championships much less often than do the United States and Canada, and discussing their organization will add little to the discussion. The World Bridge Federation is the sponsoring body for all world championships, including the World Team Olympiad (each leap year), the World Bridge Championships (each even numbered non-leap year), the Bermuda Bowl and the Venice Cup (each odd numbered year), and such other championships as the Executive Council of the WBF shall authorize (see the By-Laws of the WBF, which are attached.) At present these championships regularly include Senior Championships and Junior Championships, which are usually held separately from the others. The WBF assumed this role beginning in 1978. The chief governing bodies of the WBF are a Congress and an Executive Council. The Executive Council consists of five members each from Zones 1 and 2 (Europe and the American Contract Bridge League), one member from each other zone, and the President of the WBF. The Congress consists of one member from each National Bridge Organization (NBO). The true power rests in the Executive Council. However, teams represent NBOs. In Europe, where individual countries belong to the European Bridge League, and where individual bridge players pay dues to their respective NBOs, the situation is relatively simple.
