2017-18 SEASON PREVIEW The 2017-18 Fighting Illini women’s swimming and diving team looks to DIVING build off of its recent success, following four consecutive winning seasons. Coming off of a successful freshman campaign, the 2017-18 sophomore class will look to continue that success this year. Jamie Kolar and Monica Guyett made quite the impact in their first year in Champaign, as the two both finished with top times on the season. Kolar posted the top 100 back- stroke time on the season at the Big Ten Championships, moving up to fifth on the fastest individuals list, while Guyett finished with the top 1000 free- style and 1650 freestyle times on the season. The class also features Kristin Anderson, Rebecca Corzine, Mary Margaret Fry, Molly Hein, Lauren LaPeter, Emily Martin, Fiona McDermott, Haley Nelson and Morgan Young.

Illinois welcomes six new student-athletes to the program in a promis- ing freshman class, as Emma Burns, Emma Curtis, Natalie Edwards, Erin Emme, Jimena Martinez and Michelle McCord look to make an immediate impact for the Illini.

“The freshmen on paper are a very talented class,” Novitsky said. “They continue to step up and lead in practice and will help us out in multiple events in our lineup.”

SUE NOVITSKY HEAD COACH // 18TH SEASON

Sue Novitsky enters her 18th season as the head coach of the University of Illinois THE NOVITSKY FILE swimming and diving team. Novitsky, who joined the University of Illinois swimming and diving staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 1994, begins her 22nd season as Hometown: Huntington Woods, Mich. a part of the Illini program. After three seasons of working as the volunteer coach, Alma Mater: Oakland University, 1991 Novitsky was promoted to assistant coach in the fall of 1997. In August 2000, she was hired by former Director of Athletics, Ron Guenther, as the fifth head coach in the program’s history. COLLEGIATE COACHING TIMELINE 2000-present Novitsky’s first year as head coach was filled with success as three Illini qualified for the NCAA Head Coach, University of Illinois Championships, and Jessica Aveyard repeated as an All-American in the 200 backstroke. Novitsky’s swimmers continued their success at the national and international levels, as Aveyard and Ilkay Dikmen 1997-99 qualified to represent their native countries Assistant Coach, University of Illinois at the FINA World Swimming Championships 1994-96 in Fukuoka, Japan. ELLIOTT MCGILL Summit League honors three times under the coaching of his brother. ASSISTANT COACH // FIRST SEASON McGill attended Champaign Central High School and he and his wife, Emily, and daughter Grace reside in Champaign. Elliott McGill enters his first season with the program after holding the Head National Group Coaching position at the Nitro Swimming Club in Austin, Texas. Prior to coaching in Texas, the Champaign, Illinois, native was the head coach at Eastern Illinois University. At the time of hire at EIU, McGill became the youngest head coach in Division I collegiate swimming (25).

While coaching in Texas, McGill was named to the 2016 and 2017 USA Swimming National/Junior National Team Coaching lists. He was also named the 2015 South Texas Age Group Coach of the Year and was named a 2015 FItter Faster National Age Group Finalist.

As head coach for the EIU swimming program, McGill's team's posted 34 school records, 150 All-Time Top Ten EIU Performances, 15 All-Summit League Athletic honors, as well as 43 All-Summit League Academic honors.

The 2009 graduate of EIU earned second-team All-Summit League honors during his time in Charleston and earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees from the university.

McGill has three siblings, Tyler, Colin and Sarah. Tyler, who works as the Assistant Swim Coach at Auburn University, was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team and earned a gold medal, swimming a leg on the fastest 4x100-meter relay team in London. Colin was a member of the EIU swim team from 2009-2014, earning All-

He also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times. Emmanuel "Manny" Pollard enters his first season with the program after being named head diving coach in July 2017.

Pollard most recently worked as a coach for the Minnesota Diving Academy, a position he held from 2012-2016. The Albany, New York, native also comes to Champaign having had opportunities to observe Chinese diving, as well as the Beijing Diving Team. In addition, Pollard was an International English Teacher in Beijing, China from 2016-17.

As an athlete at the University of Minnesota, Pollard garnered a number of individual accolades. A two-time Minnesota Diver of the Year, Pollard also earned All-American honors three times, once in 2015 after placing 13th in 1-meter competition, and

After posting an 8-4 record during the 2015-16 season, the Fighting Illini swimming and diving team finished 2016-17 with a dual meet record of FIGHTING ILLINI TOP TIMES OF 2016-17 7-4, giving the program four consecutive winning seasons for the first time Event Time Name Date since the span of 1996-2000. Jamie Kolar finished with the top 100 backstroke time for the team in the regular LaPeter came away with her top one-meter mark of the season (208.65) when the season with a time of :56.41 at the Missouri Invitational. The Lincolnwood, Illinois, Illini hosted Arkansas at the ARC Pool in early January. Kolar also had the second-best 200 backstroke time of the season, touching the wall in a time of 2:00.96 at the B1G Championships. The Freshman Morgan Young also contributed for the Illini, earning her top one-meter time placed her as the 8th fastest on the school’s fastest individuals list. score (206.10) of the season against Nebraska. Young’s best showing in three-meter competition came at home against SIU and ISU, posting a score of 201.00. The other freshman swimmer that made a huge impact in her first year on campus was Monica Guyett. Guyett led the way for the Illini in the long distance freestyle events all season long, finishing with the three fastest 1000 freestyle times. The freshman also had the two quickest times in the 1650 freestyle, headlined by her CONTINUED ACADEMIC SUCCESS season-best 16:53.90 time at the B1G Championships. In the classroom, the Illini swimmers and divers continued the program’s tradition of excellence, as the squad earned the Fall 2016 Scholar All-America Team recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), tying for the STECKER & STRATFORD 78th highest GPA (3.38) amongst women’s Division I swimming and diving teams.

Although there was quite an impact from the underclassmen, the Illini were led by their veterans, as both senior Gabbie Stecker and junior Samantha Stratford continued to add to their successful Illini careers.

After a dominant sophomore season a year ago, Stratford picked up right where she left off this season. The junior held the top three fastest times in the 400 individual medley on the season, as well as the top time in the 100 free, which qualified for the NCAA B Cut. The highlight of her season was a school record time of 1:58.95 in the 200 individual medley at the Missouri Invitational. Stratford finished with the seven fastest times in the 200 IM for the Illini on the season.

Senior Gabbie Stecker also saw a lot of success on the season, finishing with the team’s season best times in both the 500 freestyle, as well as the 200 backstroke. The Iowa native also came away with a school record time of 1:59.12 in the 200 butterfly at the B1G Championships. The time qualified for the NCAA B cut. Both swimmers were also part of school record performances in the 400 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMERS

The Illini also saw top marks on the season from a number of other swimmers, including seniors Audrey Rodawig and Amelia Schilling, junior Ashley Aegerter and sophomores Gabriele Serniute and Megan Vuong.

The two seniors led the way in the short distance freestyle events, as Rodawig came away with the top 50 freestyle time of the season with a time of :23.36 and Schilling was the fastest Illini swimmer in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:48.61.

Aegerter and Serniute also made contributions for the Illini, especially in breaststroke events, as Aegerter moved up to fourth fastest on the all-time fastest individuals list in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.80. The time also qualified for the NCAA B Cut. Serniute made her mark in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a team-best time of 1:02.84 at the Missouri Invitational.

After an impressive freshman campaign, sophomore Megan Vuong earned a season- best time for the Illini in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of :54.87.

ON THE BOARDS

The three divers that competed for the Illini this season were sophomore Madeline Kuhn, freshman Lauren LaPeter and freshman Morgan Young. Kuhn led the way for the Illini all season long, earning top marks in both one-meter and three-meter diving competition. The sophomore posted her top one-meter score of 257.62 against Nebraska. Her top three-meter diving mark came at the first road meet of the season at Northwestern. At the B1G Championships, Kuhn came up big on the tower dive, finishing with a score that places her at second on the school’s top-10 list.
